  • @Edano but now there is no longer an easy way to raise the subject of testing without causing the very fear and panic that the gov were pretending they wanted to avoid.
But very soon the truth will out because people will become sick in numbers that
    cannot be hidden
    by elainekirk 8/1/2011 2:23:10 PM

  • @elainekirk , as so often, the translation from Japanese is confusing. It sounds like quite some radioactivity was deposited in the piping feeding into the stack. As the NISA report states the stack monitors were working at the time of the venting. Tepco must have some idea on the quantities that went up the stack. As to the highly-radioactive debris, they should send the robots to collect it in special concrete lined dumpsters. It is crazy to let this stuff lie around in the open.

  • 4 killed, 2 missing in torrential rain in Japan

Torrential rains in central and northeastern Japan have left 4 people dead and 2 missing, after one more death was confirmed on Monday.

The rains last week and through the weekend in Niigata and Fukushima Prefectures have burst river banks and caused flooding in many areas. More than 7,400 homes have been damaged.

Huge mudflows have also inundated rice paddies in Niigata Prefecture, a key rice growing area. This is expected to affect the region's harvest.

In the major rice producing city of Tokaichi, torrents of water, mud, and driftwood entered rice paddies along a river after it overflowed its banks.

Niigata Prefecture says the rain has damaged at least 1,042 hectares of farmland and rice paddies in 13 municipalities.

The full extent of damage will become clear as more reports from affected areas reach prefectural authorities.

  • Highly radioactive water flows into another place

Highly radioactive water has been found in the basement of a building at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant near the storage facility for contaminated water.

Tokyo Electric Power Company said on Monday that it discovered about 700 tons of contaminated water on Saturday in the basement of an on-site building.

The utility said the water contained 19,000 becquerels of radioactive cesium 134 per cubic centimeter, and 22,000 becquerels of cesium 137 --- both very high levels.

Until June, the building was connected by a hose with another building where highly radioactive water is now being stored. The buildings are located next to each other and are part of the plant's waste disposal facility.

The utility is investigating how the leakage happened but says it has already started the work to stop the contaminated water from leaking out of the building.

  • japan looks ugly here: quakes.globalincidentmap.com
    by Edano 8/1/2011 3:21:16 PM

  • @ Edano, the thing I wonder about is how does debris get inside the exhaust piping more than contamination particulates from the accident, I could see the levels being high based on what exhausted out and plated out on the piping but not necessarily larger debris... the break could have deposited the particulates on some debris under the break area. There was also something about the water from rain getting into the stack but I'm not so sure it would collect in the pipe as the discharge containment piping from the units seem to go in the stack pipe at an elevated location so the water would collect more at the bottom of the stack
    by dean 8/1/2011 3:23:38 PM

  • @dean IIRC 1-2 actually step up to the join for the stack where 3-4 are higher up as they run to join at the stack. So there could be a lower place where water could collect. Will see if I can find the image that shows the pipes.

  • Turkey yet to decide whether to resume nuclear plant talks with Japan

    TOKYO/CAIRO, Aug. 1, Kyodo

Turkey has yet to decide on whether to resume discussions with Japan on importing Japanese nuclear power generation technologies, which have been suspended since the nuclear crisis triggered at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, a source at the Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Ministry said Monday.

A formal decision will be made at a meeting of Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and other senior government officials, the source told Kyodo News.

The source made the remarks after Japanese government officials said that Turkey had told Japan of its readiness to resume the talks.

FEATURE: Fukushima people seek science savvy on skepticism of government

    By Junko Horiuchi
    FUKUSHIMA, Japan, Aug. 1, Kyodo

A radioactivity measurement station set up in the city of Fukushima by a civic group draws people who are skeptical about government data related to the nuclear plant crisis and keen to quickly know if food products they have are safe.

The station in the city, some 50 kilometers from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, offers a German measuring machine as part of projects ongoing in Fukushima aimed at helping people get scientific information of their own. english.kyodonews.jp
