  • So far the only in depth article I have found is held by the Oxford Journal press and they want $42 for it without a promise of having actual testing results or more details on the animal testing program.

I did read some horrific bits on the Nevada test sites. Farmers who migrated their sheep through the radioactive areas soon after a bomb test had large amounts of their flocks die, multi-generational herd issues and mutations. Remind me to never move to Nevada. Bo mentioned there have been about 1000 tests at the Nevada sites.

  • Anyone have any thoughts on the potential for hydrazine to be vaporized and travel in that airborne steam? They used hydrazine for a while to cool the reactors. Now people have asked on twitter if that could be the more likely cause for nosebleeds, sore throats etc. in areas where the radiation wasn't super high...
    by lillymunster 8/12/2011 8:54:34 PM

  • That paper Elaine linked to also says the hydrazine was only used at unit 3 in the reactor and sfp and that is has an impact on plutonium..

  • @lillymunster I never saw those 79 pics on tepco site I am going in...soon as I recover from seeing/hearing a firework stock go up in spectacular (bloody scary) fashion
    by elainekirk 8/12/2011 9:05:49 PM

  • That is the first I have heard of it. I tried to backtrack that person's web account to maybe find their email address with no luck. Thought maybe emailing and asking them what they know about this 1979 business..
    by lillymunster 8/12/2011 9:09:23 PM

  • @lillymunster , I assume they used reptiles because they retain greater regenerative powers than mammals. Lizards can regrow their tails that they shed when a predator is after them. The wiggling tail left behind trips the predator, while the animal gets away. Crocs can regrow claws. The question remains why they did not pick a smaller species. Birth defects in domestic animals around these sites would provide great insight. I never saw any epidemiological studies though.

so if there was a quake in 79 that caused the damage in those pics then there has been a massive cover up because it was known that the fuku site was fuku'ed

  • @elainekirk If it was minor damage plus in 79 regulation and oversight might not be what it is today. I know at some point they put shocks on the vent stack towers to keep them from swaying. The fissures should have given someone a clue but track record so far seems to be to learn lessons, don't fix them and do a better job on the next reactor build.

  • Paddy soil was examined in the prefecture in Koriyama, Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident, it has penetrated to a depth of approximately 15 cm part of the radiocesium in the Agricultural Research Center of Tokyo and Fukushima found. Date journals 15 "radioisotope source," to announce.

Examined in late May. 88% of cesium 134 and 137 cm depths up to three radioactive, and 96% remained the same up to 5 cm, was detected in trace amounts at 15 cm depth.

  • @lillymunster hydrazine:
"Symptoms of acute (short-term) exposure to high levels of hydrazine may include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, dizziness, headache, nausea, pulmonary edema, seizures, coma in humans. Acute exposure can also damage the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. The liquid is corrosive and may produce dermatitis from skin contact in humans and animals. Effects to the lungs, liver, spleen, and thyroid have been reported in animals chronically exposed to hydrazine via inhalation. Increased incidences of lung, nasal cavity, and liver tumors have been observed in rodents exposed to hydrazine." en.wikipedia.org
hydrazine could better account for the nose bleedings than radiation exposure, imo. i don't know if the concentration was high enough to cause symptoms.

  • @Edano That had been the big question since there are radiation pockets it is hard to say if someone got a big dose but in Tokyo it doesn't sound like it would be likely to get a big enough dose for a radiation poisoning thing. There was the picture from somewhere in Fukushima prefecture where the woman had the dermatitis looking stuff around her fingernails.
    by lillymunster 8/12/2011 11:14:00 PM

  • @lillymunster yes, i remember this.
    by Edano 8/12/2011 11:14:45 PM

  • Of course we can't tell people what is causing their symptoms but at least letting people know it could have another cause might be a good thing.
