  • @bo I tell people this, some get it, others don't. If they have to stop and think about it, it tends to sink in. It is much easier to not think about it and live in denial
    by lillymunster 8/14/2011 3:08:43 AM

  • Ft. Calhoun did manage to make a few people uncomfortable enough to think about things. I think the explosions at Fukushima were still fresh enough in people's minds.
    by lillymunster 8/14/2011 3:08:55 AM

  • Speaking of denial:
FORT CALHOUN, Neb. (AP) - The Omaha Public Power District says it has submitted a plan to restart its Fort Calhoun nuclear station to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Much of the nuclear plant about 20 miles north of Omaha has been surrounded by Missouri River floodwaters since at least June, but the plant itself remains dry inside. Fort Calhoun has been shut down since April because it was being refueled before the flooding began.

OPPD says it filed a plan Thursday detailing its proposal for restarting the plant. Details were not released, but utility officials said late last month that the plant could reopen this fall or be delayed until next spring if massive repairs are needed.

The federal commission must approve a plan for repairs and inspections before the plant reopens.

  • RE: FC NPP. The singular overriding concern for almost all of these plants is shareholder return. Always the corporate positioning is how do we do what will maximize the returns to investors. Therefore, get that plant up and running, no matter what!
    by bo 8/14/2011 3:33:37 AM

  • @bo OPPD let slip their real motivation. They can't sell the power from Ft. Calhoun on the open market when it is shut down. The claimed Ft. Calhoun only produces 25% of Omaha's need and in the next sentence said they miss the money from selling the power elsewhere. So the 25% need in Omaha is less? Or Calhoun makes more than Omaha needs or can use?

  • Radioactive impact on wheat may be small

Researchers in Japan have found that wheat absorbs a relatively small amount of radioactive cesium from its roots, and the impact of the substance on wheat grain may be small.

The scientists at the University of Tokyo have been conducting research since immediately after the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, jointly with Fukushima Prefecture, to study the impact of radioactive substances on farm products.

They found 280,000 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilograms in wheat leaves which had grown before the disaster and were exposed to the radiation from Fukushima. Meanwhile wheat grain which grew afterwards showed about 300 bequerels of cesium, or about one 1,000th of the cesium found in leaves.

The scientists believe wheat absorbs only a small amount of radioactive cesium through its roots.

They believe the substance does not migrate from leaves to the grain, the edible part, which makes the impact small.

They also measured the distribution of radioactive cesium in rice paddies in Fukushima prefecture by collecting soil at 5 centimeter increments from the surface.

96 percent of the cesium was found at the 5 centimeter level from the surface.

The scientists will continue the research as they believe the impact of the radioactive cesium can be reduced significantly by removing the top soil.

Professor Sho Shiozawa of the University of Tokyo says he hopes to help revive the agriculture of Fukushima Prefecture by showing the actual impact level of radioactive materials on rice paddies and farming activities.

  • Mud sports festival held in Fukushima

People enjoyed playing volleyball and other sports in the mud in Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan.

The festival was held in the town of Hanawa on Sunday. A local sports club started the event 3 years ago.

The town is about 75 kilometers from the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

But the organizers say it's safe as they measured radiation levels in the courts and confirmed it was about 0.2 microsieverts per hour.

Mud courts for various events were set up on the banks of the Kuji River by drawing river water.

In the volleyball competition, over 50 people in 13 teams took part. They included local people and those who returned home for the Buddhist Bon holiday.

The participants became soaked in the mud as they went after the ball.

A 38-year-old man from Kanagawa Prefecture said he has taken part in the event every year, but he still finds it difficult to play in the mud. He said he wasn't concerned about the radiation levels.
