  • @elainekirk , Thanks. I check em out. Unwanted tritium releases seem to happen quite often in the nuclear power plant business.

  • @hudebnik I saw a reference to this but no story, thanks for finding that.

  • @hudebnikI hadnt seen that before but tht humour should be applauded it helps to keep people going
    by elainekirk 8/13/2011 5:40:17 PM

  • I wondered if we should suggest these stand alone hepa filters since the blow clean air back out that they might kick more contamination airborne by disturbing dust. Then again they seem to lower the overall content in a room well.
    by lillymunster 8/13/2011 5:40:27 PM

  • It is an absolute classic cockup, you couldn't make it up!
    by hudebnik 8/13/2011 5:40:51 PM

  • @elainekirk humor after a disaster can be risky. It was a while before entertainment in the US would touch anything related to 9-11

  • @lillymunster we need to cost first voluntary evacuees get no government support and those in evac centres have recieved no state aid as the state say they are getting everything provided
    by elainekirk 8/13/2011 5:42:25 PM

  • I am currently re-reading an article from one of the Hanford groups about the past deception and security around Hanford. Pretty good read if anyone is interested in WWII type stuff or Hanford. I see lots of similarities with GoJ and TEPCO www.hanfordchallenge.org

  • @lillymunster worried about jumping in with ideas that they cannot afford :( maybe ask rockhopper when she has recovered from being teased over her gender
    by elainekirk 8/13/2011 5:44:15 PM

  • @elainekirk I know there was a problem where pensioners and those who already lived with assistance got cut off because they were in a shelter so they lost whatever Japan uses for food assistance and some other program. It put people into a weird limbo where they couldn't move out of the shelter due to lost benefits.
    by lillymunster 8/13/2011 5:44:30 PM

  • @elainekirk I didn't see that one. :-) Rockhopper brings up a very good point and where we were at with the providing filters via NGOs. People can't always afford the needed equipment. So there is obviously a need for getting things at cost or given.
    by lillymunster 8/13/2011 5:46:18 PM

  • there are billions of yen in donations in Japan that hasnt found its way to the people at first I thought it incompetence but now I suspect it is being blocked so the people comply with orders to return/stay in contaminated areas
    by elainekirk 8/13/2011 5:46:30 PM

  • THe same thing would happen here. Those with resource would be those things. Those who struggle to pay their rent every month would do without.
    by lillymunster 8/13/2011 5:46:47 PM

  • @elainekirk International red cross needs to investigate. They seemed to have dumped a bunch of cash and left. :-( I think the small charities and some of the ad-hoc groups that popped up like IDRO and the animal rescues are better at filling the gaps where the big charities are screwing up.

Kyoto rejects ceremonial wood over radiation fears: Japan's former imperial capital of Kyoto apologised Saturday after rejecting wood from the tsunami-ravaged Pacific coast for a traditional bonfire festival over fears of radioactive contamination. www.google.com
    .
It sounds understandable until you consider that they are rejecting the radiation laden wood offered by the people who are being told it is safe to live amongst it!! Why isnt said governor crying out for the people to be moved from the area and offering them refuge in his area ....ah he wouldnt want contaminated people just like he doesnt want their wood...
    by elainekirk 8/13/2011 5:52:27 PM

  • @elainekirk as i have seen others mention in recent days, there needs to be some large scale relocation. From what I have read there is excess housing in many areas, the challenge would be finding people jobs.
    by lillymunster 8/13/2011 5:54:58 PM

  • @lillymunster I think if they made efforts to put prefabs up leaving room for industrial/retail units and let communities in there the people would soon be in employment
    by elainekirk 8/13/2011 6:03:24 PM

  • More people means more need for services. I think the bigger factor is the desire to deny the unsafe situation by the govt. I can see big lawsuits in 5 years where people sue for damages due to the govt. inaction or forcing people to stay in areas deemed safe that are not. Logic would say to cut losses now and lot injure people. I don't know enough about the Emperors position but wonder if him saying something would matter.
    by lillymunster 8/13/2011 6:13:08 PM

  • @lillymunster , air and water filtration should become a must in the high rad level areas, and the gov. should pay for filters and waste disposal.
by Peter Melzer 8/13/2011 6:13:13 PM

  • @Peter Melzer we are going to have to force the issue
    by elainekirk 8/13/2011 6:15:53 PM

  • @lillymunster , the harder gov. tries to keep the cost low, the greater the long-term damages, and the cost associated with them. That the bean counters do not see the relationship!
by Peter Melzer 8/13/2011 6:16:03 PM

  • @Peter Melzer they are telling people the city water is totally safe and in many cases telling people an area is safe. Yes they should be providing things like that but it seems to then be an admission something is wrong. This reminds me of the video of the townspeople going after the guy from the national govt. Nobody is buying the lie yet it is repeated.
    by lillymunster 8/13/2011 6:16:14 PM

  • @lillymunster , I hope we can get the water filter initiative going, :)
by Peter Melzer 8/13/2011 6:17:16 PM

  • @Peter Melzer Where I am at with the water filters. The original company Dean found will not provide test results. Dean asked and I asked both the distributor and the manufacturer and got either dodgy answers or no answers. I have concerns distributing a filter that they won't provide data on. There are some readily available reverse osmosis systems including whole house units. So I am thinking maybe we need to look into 2 RO options. The HEPA filter for AC/Heat units seem to all be various sizes for each unit. So not sure there. The in room hepa filters enviroreporter used are promising. Thinking maybe they are an easier to distribute option. Then the only issues are making sure we purchase with proper power plugs and plumbing hook ups.
I also talked to Gemini with the orphanage charity. She wants to look into doing an install at one of the orphanages closer to the problem areas since they have more need. They are willing to do site survey an installs for us at the orphanages. Once I have a coherant list of products we can move forward with everything else as far as pitching for fundraising and distribution by other NGOs via Bo's co-worker

Summer holiday exodus peaks in Japan

People in Japan have started heading to their hometowns and resorts for the Buddhist Bon holidays, causing congestion on highways.

On outbound lanes of the Tohoku Expressway, traffic jams stretched 54 kilometers in Tochigi Prefecture at 9:30 AM on Saturday.

Congestion is also expected on trains and planes.
Shinkansen trains leaving Tokyo on Saturday are almost fully booked.

Morning flights from Tokyo's Haneda airport to domestic destinations are almost full.

The return rush is expected to peak from Sunday through Thursday of next week.

  • EU advises more extensive radiation tests on fish

The European Union has advised its members to conduct radiation tests on marine products from countries other than Japan in the South China Sea and Pacific regions.

Since the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in March, the EU has been checking the levels of radioactive cesium and iodine in food products imported from Japan.

Marine products caught in waters around Japan have also been subject to the tests.

But the EU has now advised inspection authorities to voluntarily check marine products imported from other countries as well.
The recommended tests cover marine products from a wide area stretching from the South China Sea to the Pacific Ocean to the US west coast.

NHK's correspondent in Brussels says that if radioactive material above the legal limit is found in products that have been exported by countries from these areas, then those countries may seek damages from Japan.

The EU says there have been no reports of marine products exceeding safety limits for radioactivity. The Japanese government maintains that the chance of this happening is very slim, but it also says it will continue to monitor the results of tests conducted by EU nations.

  • @elainekirk I think that brochure got soundly blasted after it was given out.
    by lillymunster 8/13/2011 6:39:05 PM

  • @elainekirk yes, but the japanese people have brains and they are able to think independently, or not ?
    by Edano 8/13/2011 6:39:12 PM

  • There seems to be a disconnect. You can tell others that someone exposed to radiation is no danger to others without going all in and claim that the radiation from the meltdowns is harmless.
    by lillymunster 8/13/2011 6:40:22 PM

  • @Edano It is like anywhere else. Some are willfully clueless, others in denial for various reasons and many know the deal but have limits on what they can do about it.
