  • Over 1,500 workers' compensation claims filed in 3 quake-hit areas

    SENDAI, Aug. 17, Kyodo

Over 1,500 applications for workers' compensation have been filed as of Wednesday over people who died or went missing at work during the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in the three worst-hit prefectures, according to a tally by a local labor bureau.

Among them, approval has already been given for insurance benefits to be paid in 1,305 cases, equivalent to about one third of payments made nationwide in fiscal 2010, which ended March 31. The number of payments to be made is almost certain to become the largest ever for a single natural disaster in Japan.

This compares to the 67 cases of compensation payments made in the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake that devastated Kobe and its vicinity, and 10 cases following the 2004 quake that struck the Chuetsu area in Niigata Prefecture. english.kyodonews.jp

  • Godzilla exhibit to start at museum displaying H-bomb-exposed boat

    TOKYO, Aug. 17, Kyodo

An exhibition featuring the director of the Godzilla movie, which was inspired by the U.S. hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll in 1954, will be held this weekend at a Tokyo museum exhibiting the Japanese Lucky Dragon fishing boat that was actually exposed to the fallout from the same nuclear test.

The exhibition at the Daigo Fukuryu Maru Exhibition Hall from Friday to Sunday will show the script used by the late director Ishiro Honda and the storyboard from the film. The movie depicts a monster from the deep that is awoken by the U.S. hydrogen bomb test and comes to attack Tokyo.

The Lucky Dragon boat and Godzilla are ''connected as both being the victims of the hydrogen bomb,'' said Kazuya Yasuda, the curator of the exhibition. The unique collaboration was organized to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Honda's birth. english.kyodonews.jp

  • @Edano & Elaine, she's insane... fire 'um up! There's a lot of Japan that's not ruined yet, countless children who also deserve a chance to born with hideous deformities and ailments like their Fukushima neighbors, let's get this show on the road already!

I will ask her, but she told me that it's like 0.2-0.6microSv/h in Nagareyama

  • @elainekirk the lost radiation from #2 must have gone somewhere ...
    by Edano 8/17/2011 9:40:21 AM

  • @Edano good thinking does that mean levels may reduce it must be very frightening well it is they are fraught
    by elainekirk 8/17/2011 9:42:32 AM

  • @elainekirk maybe a spike should be controlled, but 0.6 ySv is not really ..... you know it's below 100 millisv. ;)

  • @Edano will it go down do you think is there anything positive we can tell them
    by elainekirk 8/17/2011 9:50:23 AM

  • @elainekirk they should check if it goes down again. positive ? ask dr yamashit.
    by Edano 8/17/2011 9:52:04 AM

    by bo 8/17/2011 9:59:07 AM

  • @elainekirk Thank you for the map you posted. They seem to be near a hotspot. I am with what Edano said, 0.6 uSv/h is not extremely high, but better if they keep checking.

  • @elainekirk, Edano, lillymunster Regarding Dr. Shunichi Yamashita, I think he has not the least intention of stepping down, as he is busy in accomplishing the task of reassuring mothers that radiation is safe. jen.jiji.com

I read of the 100uSv/h to 10 uSv/h correction (contraddicted by the following '20 uSv/h is then obviously safe' sentence): it is simply ridiculous. Are 10 uSv/h safe, then?
    by tomo-kun 8/17/2011 10:13:20 AM

  • @bo wwhilst the steam story is almost certainly true there is a very good supervisor there who hasn't endorsed it and he has the respect of the workers he looks after them and tepco will not argue with him so basically until such a time as the mainstream workers want to speak it will not be validated I think I have relayed that correctly
    by elainekirk 8/17/2011 10:16:58 AM

  • @edano are you here
    by elainekirk 8/17/2011 10:20:41 AM

  • @elainekirk thanks. So does that mean they would prefer not to have it mentioned on RT? Or just that they themselves are not certain?
    by bo 8/17/2011 10:22:23 AM

  • @bo I am terrible at interpreting "No credible news about the steam, as far as I see, but
probably true. No one on site would not like to admit the melted fuel
went down under the basement. No one know where they are, anyway"
    by elainekirk 8/17/2011 10:24:53 AM

  • Thanks for your help elaine. I'll keep you posted whether I go on or not.
    by bo 8/17/2011 10:26:38 AM

  • @bo I think from the mail I was sent that two workers whilstleblew and others are nervous so we can read it many ways I think they are desperate each quake brings more fear and I think those brave enough to speak out sould be heard if the info is credible
    by elainekirk 8/17/2011 10:29:21 AM

  • @bo we have a saying "you couldnt make it up" an could anybody have made that up ? I think not. before '02 the government sat on a whistleblowers info on the state of cooling pipes for 2yrs , 1 whistleblower big problem uncovered
    by elainekirk 8/17/2011 10:32:06 AM

  • Agreed. It is hard to know what is the best thing to do to help. If I am on air, I will endeavor to talk in a way that protects them.

  • from rockhopper Sorry, I can't stay here today. can't stop crying. Maybe because the migraine I have today. So exhausted after reading the mtg. A phrase still torments me. A guy at work said, when I explained to these guys about parents' worry. He, a father of a kid... "Congenital deformity occurs at a certain rate, right? We should explain it to pregnant women now so that they will feel OK." Can you imagine how I felt? It's just insane to say that as a human being. I'm not a mom, yet, I would never think like him! rockhopper tweets
