  • Radioactive Fukushima children given cancer all-clear : According to a report by the Japanese national broadcaster, NHK, around half of 1149 children tested in Fukushima prefecture have radioactive iodine in their thyroid glands.
Satoshi Tashiro of Hiroshima University told a meeting of the Japan Pediatric Society in Tokyo that the highest level measured was 35 millisieverts. Radiation doses below 100 millisieverts are not considered dangerous, and Tashiro said that thyroid cancer will therefore probably not increase in the future.
Because of public fears over radiation, Tashiro's reassurance may not satisfy the parents of children affected. A comparison with what happened after the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine might put the finding into perspective, however....... www.newscientist.com

  • @Majj that sickens me , how dare they make assumptions on unproven unresearched figures !! Tepco have a long history of deceit and as they are the only ones testing in the area those children were in, (remembering the zone was quite small at first) and as their figures are what the speedi was given to work on... also bearing in mind that they werent all given stable iodine, also bearing in mind that they didnt properly test the few children who did have gamma and on whose results the rest were guesstimated... Oh I am going for coffee and a cigaratte before I end up wasting energy commenting on that absolutely crap article

    --- eq2: from 2200 mm (8/11 23:00) to -2100 mm (8/12 11:00)

    - tepco data usually provides remarks to explain unusual readings, like instrument failures, electricity blackouts, power switchings, gauge replacings, recalibrations, false readings, etc, in each last column, or in the lowest row. however, there are no remarks since july 23. so there are no technical explanations.

    interpretations:

    - the decribed pressure, temperature and water level drops during the two last earthquakes are consistent with the now reported, probably highly radioactive "steams out of ground cracks". the earthquakes may have cracked underground parts of all 3 reactors esp. #1 and #2. #3 did not lose pressure. since nitrogen is injected into all 3 reactors, we would normally expect rising pressures.
    - the desribed rad spikes in #1 drywell b are significantly higher since the last earthquakes. spikes never reached 300 Sv/h before. though the instrument has been reported as failure, there seem to be radioactive masses moving around and showing recriticality.
    - the most significant anomaly happened in #2 drywell b. the radiation rose since eq1 and dropped suddenly within 6 hours from 15.7 to 0.00207 Sv/h during eq2. the only rational explanation would be a movement of radioactive masses and a leaking of the masses away from the instrument. radioactive particles may have escaped through the cracks with the steam.
    - there have been reported more radioactive leaks with readings over 10 Sv/h. #3 has no radiation readings over 3.7 Sv/h. #1 has low radiation readings (~0.7 Sv/h) aside from drywell b (27-371 Sv/h). #2 readings are around 6 (torus b), 10 (drywell a) and 15 (drwell b before eq2) Sv/h.
    - if there is a realease of steam with rad levels over 10 MSv/h, it can only stem from #1 drywell or #2 drywell and torus through cracks in the containment and ground fissures, since steam rising from the soil outside the reactors is reported.
    - the described anomalies are unique in the latest history (since april/may) and arise concerns about the integrity of the concrete buildings.

  • Murky Science Clouded Japan Nuclear Response : IITATE, Japan—After a third explosion rocked Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex on March 15, the weather took a worrisome turn. A wind that had been blowing steadily out to sea shifted to the northwest, carrying plumes of radiation up a river known locally as the "corridor of wind." That evening, a late-winter snow began falling on this mountain village. Residents awakened the next day to a blanket of white over their homes, roads, cow pastures and pine forests. They stepped outside and began shoveling.

Back in Tokyo, officials had information suggesting that the snow carried radiation to this community 17 miles from the stricken plant, well outside the government's evacuation zone. Nevertheless, a week passed before government officials gave residents any clear indication that their town of 6,000 had become a nuclear "hot spot," and even then they were hesitant to order residents to get out. "We spent a lot of time debating because we knew we were making a very profound decision," says Toshimitsu Honma, a member of the Nuclear Safety Commission's emergency committee and deputy director general at the Nuclear Safety Research Center, a government agency....... online.wsj.com
