  • @Puc ty Puc can you see the one over #3? it has been there for hours working but curious as to what and tepco seem to have reduced their updates soo,,,

  • The NewScientist tried to refute the report in The Independent that the earthquake, not tsunami, doomed Unit. www.newscientist.com They present the compelling evidence of the say-so of a NISA spokesman without any sign that they attempted to test the veracity of NISA's counter claims.
    by Ian 8/22/2011 12:47:15 AM

  • This is the report NISA refutes : www.independent.co.uk
    by Ian 8/22/2011 12:48:00 AM

  • that is the second time in a few days that the new scientist has spawned nuke friendly propoganda
    by elainekirk 8/22/2011 12:53:26 AM

  • Either this is a misquote or NISA is really clueless "So not until the tsunami swept away the diesel generators did the cooling system fail, ultimately causing meltdowns." None of the generators were swept away.
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 12:53:41 AM

  • @elainekirk Yea I saw something in my news feeds from them that sounded like it came right out of a nuclear lobbyist's office.

  • @lillymunster Sometimes it seems they're barely trying to keep up a credible pretense, doesn't it? It's just so boring trying to keep up with all those messy, what do you call them? Oh, facts.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 12:59:21 AM

  • TeppyFacts are much easier. Just make something up and express deep regret later.

24th Narch Fukushima radioactive fallout nears Chernobyl levels www.newscientist.com
Japan's damaged nuclear plant in Fukushima has been emitting radioactive iodine and caesium at levels approaching those seen in the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident in 1986. Austrian researchers have used a worldwide network of radiation detectors – designed to spot clandestine nuclear bomb tests – to show that iodine-131 is being released at daily levels 73 per cent of those seen after the 1986 disaster. The daily amount of caesium-137 released from Fukushima Daiichi is around 60 per cent of the amount released from Chernobyl.

16th August Radioactive Fukushima children given cancer all-clear www.newscientist.com
When the reactor core at Chernobyl exploded, some 1.76 × 1018 becquerels of iodine-131 escaped into the atmosphere. According to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency in Japan, 1.30 × 1017 becquerels of iodine-131 escaped following the partial meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, less than 10 per cent that released at Chernobyl

  • OK wild insane idea of the day - Q- are they trying to hold #4 up with that crane?

    by elainekirk 8/22/2011 1:08:49 AM

  • I think it would be worth finding out if New Scientist has been bought out or gotten a new editor recently. :-)
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 1:12:17 AM

  • @elainekirk LOL. You get the research cookie for the day! Saved that for the article that needs writing on Dr. 100msv's latest lunacy.
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 1:15:11 AM

  • @elainekirk No idea about the cranes. I expected to see lots of crane activity around R1, not R3. I think that cluster back behind the common fuel pool must their erector-set staging area, but so far the activity around R3 has been inscrutable.

  • @Edano It's just resting.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 1:31:53 AM

  • @elainekirk I think you have hit on how to do the article about his latest interview. I have a pile of articles and papers he wrote previously that counter his current "opinions"
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 1:31:57 AM

  • by lillymunster 8/22/2011 1:32:58 AM

  • @elainekirk I love your idea to slap him upside the head! Thanks for posting that article. Doctors are becoming increasingly concerned about CTs and X-rays.. Given the nuke industry's penchant for belittling risk by comparing to X-rays or flights they might want to take a look at some of the new research. There's a reason they put limits on the use of some of those technologies now.

    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 1:44:23 AM

  • @Lilly Thanks!
    by LM 8/22/2011 1:44:58 AM

  • @Edano Did you mean an irradiated rice sack for Yamashita?
    by LM 8/22/2011 1:47:10 AM

  • @LM From that PDF @elaine posted just down the page:

The lifetime risk for a single full-body CT examination is estimated at .08% (1 in 1,250) for a 45-year old adult, but as mentioned previously the pediatric population is particularly susceptible to CT radiation doses.

1 in 1,250 cancer mortalities FROM A SINGLE CT SCAN? That's acceptable risk? Yes, they might want to rethink that comparison.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 1:48:41 AM

  • @LM well he writes an paper saying ct scans are dangerous for children then starts trotting around Japan saying children should go build glow in the dark sandcastles

  • @Radioguy I agree. My son had to have 2 CTs before age 6 because he had a dermoid cyst in the corner of his eye socket. Unfortunately we had no choice, but I still worry about it and he's 17 now.
