  • @AustralianCannonball Huh?
    by LM 8/22/2011 2:35:20 AM

  • @LM and they have all been paying their mortgages.... and there has been no word on free medical care being offered ..
    by elainekirk 8/22/2011 2:35:24 AM

  • @elainekirk So they just got to chase their contaminated property with 5 months of useless mortgage payments.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 2:36:16 AM

  • @elainekirk True...Everyone evacuated should have received complete compensation...the price a country should pay for building nuke plants. If you can't evacuate or give total compensation then you shouldn't build the plants to begin with.
    by LM 8/22/2011 2:38:15 AM

  • @RadioGuy and because they werent told they werent going back I suspect the compensation act that went through the diet a couple of weeks back made no provision for the financial burden of homes being 'lost' ....very neat move tepco the management are sinking lower than the plant
    by elainekirk 8/22/2011 2:39:19 AM

  • @LM Bingo. This is the total cost of commercial nuclear power.
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 2:39:25 AM

  • @LM Bingo. Repeal Price-Anderson and it will work itself out in that free-market way they always keep glorifying.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 2:39:44 AM

  • @AustralianCannonball I've never said anything about your endeavors. I appreciate your input!
    by LM 8/22/2011 2:39:50 AM

  • @elainekirk I don't fully understand JP legal statutes but I thought there was an issue of debt not being easily dismissed. Or families taking on family member debts? These people need a way to get bought out of their homes by TEPCO and the ability to buy a new one somewhere safe.
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 2:41:15 AM

  • Becasue if you are not indemnified against disasters, you CAN NOT get insurance for a nuclear plant. Notice they already can't. They had to start self-insuring, since they were so indemnified and all.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 2:41:24 AM

  • @lillymunster One hint of a settlement like that and TEPCO will vanish into a cloud of bankruptcy divestiture documents so fast it'll look like the Roadrunner's vanishing act.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 2:43:04 AM

  • @RadioGuy more risk and cost dumped onto society that isn't counted in the "cheap and clean" power meme. There should at least be an honest accessment of the use of a commercial nuclear plant. If the true cost & risk still makes it a needed technology that is one thing. So much of the total costs is taken out of the picture.
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 2:43:24 AM

  • @RadioGuy I thought that was generally the idea to sell off TEPCO to pay the victims.
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 2:43:51 AM

  • @lillymunster Exactly. That's been the argument since the mid 70's: if it can't stand by itself on its own financial merits, it's not a viable technology. And yes, except that I doubt TEPCO's market value can even come close, especially as this drags on.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 2:45:22 AM

  • @RadioGuy the GoJ has already said they will be paying the remainder. I think they are finding out that even the govt. bank account can't cover the costs.
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 2:46:27 AM

  • @all It's mind-boggling to think what will happen as all these aging plants start to malfunction or meet mother nature's fury. I think of what they'd do if San Onofre blew. They're not prepared to evacuate the 7 million here in San Diego, not to mention LA. They'll do the same here. Somehow we have to make our points heard!
    by LM 8/22/2011 2:49:04 AM

  • @lillymunster Yes, I see ex-SKF calling it a trillion-dollar disaster. I think that's being charitable.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 2:49:07 AM

  • @LM Oh, but you don't understand. Once the NRC rubberstamps their approvals, they're safe for another 20-40 years. Radiation fatigue stresses, cracked containments, they all just go away. It's magic.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 2:51:20 AM

  • @RadioGuy Yep...and the GOP will just say that the moochers are being weeded out when the poor and middle class can't evacuate.
    by LM 8/22/2011 2:53:01 AM

  • @LM an anti-nuke group in NYC had a sign at one of the big train stations. It said that Indian Point was 35 miles away and asked what you would do if it blew up?
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 2:53:44 AM

  • @RadioGuy It's the GOP's version of natural selection minus evolution.
    by LM 8/22/2011 2:53:59 AM

  • @lillymunster That would be particularly effective with one of the graphics from Bo's exhibit. :)
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 2:54:51 AM

  • @Lilly I ask myself that one...San Onofre is 33 miles from me. I wish everyone was asking that question. I'm glad some are!
    by LM 8/22/2011 2:55:27 AM

  • But I love the factual reminder. Just to bring Fukushima
    home a bit.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 2:55:41 AM

  • @LM friends from Mpls about fell over when I pointed out that the Monticello plant on the edge of town was the exact same reactor as those at Fuku. This was maybe a week after the explosions. It made it hit home
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 2:57:05 AM

  • @Lilly That's the problem...as a world we've been lulled into this state of nuclear apathy and acceptance. Fukushima should be the wake-up call. Thank you for all your hard work....all of you!!!
    by LM 8/22/2011 2:59:15 AM

  • Night all! Family calls..
    by LM 8/22/2011 3:02:58 AM

  • Just had a chat with someone on a totally unrelated board that was talking about the bomb shelter article (where I found it). He mentioned his mom wouldn't let him drink rainwater or eat snow when he was a kid. He mentioned he wondered if it had something to do with living downwind of hanford in the 50's.... I think he is off researching now.

  • Huge tsunamis may have hit Miyagi coast 6 times in 6,000 years

    TOKYO, Aug. 22, Kyodo

A team of academics led by a Hokkaido University professor has discovered geological layers suggesting that gigantic tsunamis may have pounded Miyagi Prefecture's coastal area six times over the past 6,000 years.

The six layers were found on the Pacific coast of Oya in Kesennuma in Miyagi, one of the three prefectures most severely stricken by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, according to Kobe University seismology professor Shoichi Yoshioka and other team members.

The team, which has been studying the coast since April, discovered that a cliff measuring several meters high has layers containing seashells, stones and sand which appear to have been carried by the gigantic tsunamis, the academic team said. english.kyodonews.jp

  • Niigata nuclear plant's No. 7 reactor to be suspended for checkup

    NIIGATA, Japan, Aug. 22, Kyodo

The No. 7 reactor at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in Niigata Prefecture will be suspended early Tuesday for an 83-day scheduled checkup, its operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday.

Suspension of the reactor will bring to 14 the total number in operation among the nation's 54 commercial reactors. It will leave only the No. 5 and No. 6 reactors operating at the plant, the biggest nuclear power complex in the world in terms of output power.

Tokyo Electric Power is required to undertake a newly introduced safety assessment procedure before restarting the reactor. english.kyodonews.jp

  • Good Morning @ ALL A very nice French Canadian Article : Vapors Fukushima Daiichi Jets of steam from the ground have indeed been reported by workers who are sometimes forced to temporarily evacuate the premises ( source ). Because it is radioactive steam.
This fog would not come this time of the ocean, but the steam coming out of the abundant caves of the plant...... ......the steam seems to come from elsewhere..... ...... The video of the night of Aug. 4 shows such huge vapors, along with light effects. A corium is likely responsible. Especially since it seems to be active (nuclear reaction in progress) since we found the Neptunium-239 at 38 km west of the plant ( source ). This radioactive element is indeed a product of the fission of uranium. Very unstable? neptunium-239 has a period of 2.4 days? it is fast becoming plutonium-239. Now who says nuclear reaction, said high heat. If the corium has reached the water table, it is normal for steam to be produced in quantity and escapes through the slightest flaw, crack, cavity or pipe it encounters in the soil.
If it turns out that due to the corium, it will continue to produce radioactive steam again for a long time, sometimes preventing the presence of man on the site, and delaying the work front. And in winter, it is likely that we can no longer see the central as the cold air could cause a continuous permanent fog. translate.google.com

  • @Edano that tells us the dire condition of Japans npp oversight because kk was closed after the 0 quake and all it's reactors were supposed to have all the latest safety features before it restarted ....nuff said eh
