  • @dean, abortions have been used as quite an accepted way of birth control in socialist societies. One must make sure that in the case of Chernobyl only miscarriages and abortions owing to validated severe developmental defects are examined. This may be impossible to tease apart.

  • @lillymunster @ElaineKirk - to carry on a conversation from a week ago - food radiation testing: Tokyo Kids & Radiation reports through FB:
my next trip to the supermarket will be Survey meter in-hand. i am using an eberline RM-19 with eberline HP-360 pancake, RMT GX-1 NaI scintillation probe (1in aluminum shielded), and eberline GM 1 in end window probe (less sensitive but less bulky for walk-by hot-spot detection on streets- not appropriate for food) awaiting shipment of a 2in scint. (Next Post) [It is] used and calibrated. both the scintillator and pancake. as K-40 emits β too, the scintillator will be the first up. If it is under the reference level, there is little chance i will see a rise beyond margin of error, but coupled with a usb based scintillator and laptop in the event i pick up a heavy rise, i can pretty much tell you "i don't know the others are safe, but this one is definitely not" (Last Post) i got a rise on nira from tochigi and spinach from gunma with a radex over several minutes so I want to see. the veggie markets, I will talk with the tencho first and request permission to do it discretely together, but at the packaged food stores, business is business. if meat sauce is being served in my ku in public schools which has been found to be beyond the legal limit, what is in that box of children's curry? I have a right to give it a try. I expect that after going through data from the more than 10,000 samples checked with HPGe detectors for the government and seeing many ND marks before they found as high as 41KBq/kg in food products, i may get many NDs, but if I find one that is not ND, I have a food lab on the line waiting for it.
by Mid Valley 8/25/2011 2:00:39 PM

  • @Mid Valley that partially went over my head. Peter, do you understand the equipment jargon?
    by lillymunster 8/25/2011 2:12:09 PM

  • @lillymunster. Me too. I was very glad to read his post this morning. He has been working very hard to find a good meter and get a lab to support. He is keen to set up a network for this type of testing, as there is little trust in government testing of food. Off to work I go.

  • I am trying to finish up the N. Anna article this morning. Will try to work on compiling the data Rockhopper found but will bring that back here for review to make sure I have the assumptions written correctly. I started on the radiation data review and going through some of Yamashita's papers on radiation. I hope to get back to that towards the end of the week. If anyone wants to help with that by reading a study and pulling out the conclusion and any quantifiable data let me know and I can add you to the spreadsheet and list of papers we found.
    by lillymunster 8/25/2011 2:32:08 PM

  • @lillymunster , kind a... I don't know this particular piece, but it sounds professional. If the person happens upon an interesting find, she (he) must take a very long count at a noted distance and make sure the background is subtracted.

  • Teachers urged to study radiation [25 August, 2011]: www.yomiuri.co.jp
"The government has shifted the budget allocated for promoting its nuclear power policy to organizing seminars to educate schoolteachers about radiation in light of the growing demand for education on radioactivity due to the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

The government has started holding workshops on the issue, aiming to achieve participation of 1,400 teachers nationwide.

Such workshops have been organized as part of training seminars for teachers to renew their teaching certificates. The workshops have attracted many teachers who are eager to acquire accurate knowledge about radiation in response to worries and misinformation on the subject."

  • @elainekirk , I am sure that tepco would like to use units 5 and 6 again. But I think a restart is far in the future. I remember they had to inject salt water into residual heat removal coolant loops where no saltwater belongs. Hence, they must repair or exchange the parts involved. Everything needs recertification. That work will keep them busy for some time to come.
by Peter Melzer 8/25/2011 4:32:32 PM

  • @elainekirk So they took their safety protocols from the early US sites? :-)

"The metal cans are marked with a radiolabeled, and look likely been used before and after 1960, JAEA, are investigating the circumstances had been buried."
    by lillymunster 8/25/2011 4:32:53 PM

  • @Peter Melzer I hope so. Meanwhile they are wasting money on units 5-6 while not helping compensate all the people and businesses they damaged.
    by lillymunster 8/25/2011 4:33:46 PM

  • @lillymunster , according to the article, tepco seems to be shoring up and increasing the breakwater walls, something that needs to be done in any case. They also must repair the residual heat removal equipment because it provides the heat sink for the spent fuel pools.
