  • @es I notive that some of the ocean testing is of dust is this just a way of lowering the figures ?
    by elainekirk 8/25/2011 4:39:33 PM

  • @elainekirk I don't know about that. I imagine it might be instuctive to collect atmospheric samples at ocean points as well as the sea-water samples though.

  • @Peter Melzer tepco are not saying there is anything wrong with the pipes and in Japan the government inspector is employed by the power company - onsite for big npp's - shared by smaller npp's - tepco say the plant 5 & 6 are fine I didnt get the impression that they are looking to the future I got the impression they were looking at

  • 9 candidates to vie for DPJ presidency<b/> [25 August, 2011]: www3.nhk.or.jp
"Campaign staff of candidates in the ruling Democratic Party's leadership election have gathered at a party meeting to learn about election procedures.

The campaign for party president will be announced on Saturday after the Diet passes 2 key bills on Friday.

On Thursday, staff of 9 candidates including former Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara and Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda attended the meeting at party headquarters.

The chairman of the party's central election committee Issei Koga noted pending issues such as the March 11th disaster.

He said so he would like a proper election that revives the party and prevents the creation of a political vacuum.

398 party legislators with voting rights will cast their ballots for party president next Monday.

Separately, former Democratic Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama told followers that they need not necessarily choose from among those named.

He said the new administration must greatly change Japan's handling of the nuclear accident, and urged them to find the most appropriate person to do so."

Washington Monument Earthquake Damage: More Cracks Found By Park Service
The National Park Service says engineers have discovered several additional cracks in the top portion of the Washington Monument.

The cracks were found Wednesday during a daylong inspection of the interior of the monument. A 4-foot crack was discovered Tuesday during an inspection of the exterior by helicopter, shortly after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook the nation's capital.

The monument is closed to visitors indefinitely.

    by elainekirk 8/25/2011 6:09:12 PM

  • Earthquakes are funny... They can topple temple and cathedral spires, crack monuments, and blessedly have no effect on nuclear plants that are already known to have seismic issues. I think I'll let the theologists muse on that one. ;)

  • Here's a study of how the highest-dose zone that runs along a NW path from the plant across Fukushima Prefecture was formed : www.jaea.go.jp It concludes that it was caused when "radioactive plume discharged in the afternoon of 15 March flowed toward the west to northwest direction from the plant. It was washed out by a rain band moved from the northwest direction and deposited on the ground over the northwest area of the plant during the period from the evening to midnight of 15 March."

This 'Work on the roof' photo is from TEPCO's archive (added August 10, 2011) and as I understand it it's showing workers drilling holes in the roofs of Daiichi Units 5 & 6 on March 18, 2011, presumably to help prevent hydrogen buildup from the SFP's and reduce the risk of further explosions at the plant.

  • @es come to think of it a road on the higher level was fracturedtoo wasn't it?
    by elainekirk 8/25/2011 7:06:47 PM

  • @elainekirk I think TEPCO concern about groundwater left the building along with the corium. I mean, c'mon... they're getting to chase the corium with injected water trying to find it. "You hoo! Here corium corium." ;)
    by RadioGuy 8/25/2011 7:10:35 PM

  • @elainekirk Yes, I remember that too. Badly fractured. Given that the whole mess certainly includes 5 & 6, I have to say I think it's nonsense that any of the Daiichi reactors will ever work again.
    by es 8/25/2011 7:10:59 PM

  • Seems I remember some pretty alarming ground cracks running straight through the reactors, too. This has to be a trial balloon, I think, to guage the severity of the public (and private and governmental) response to the suggestion.
    by RadioGuy 8/25/2011 7:12:57 PM

  • I think they need a reading on whether they are ever going to be allowed to include energy from those reactors in their plans.
    by RadioGuy 8/25/2011 7:14:15 PM

  • They have to know the response at this time would be WTF!!!?!?!???
    by RadioGuy 8/25/2011 7:14:40 PM

  • 5&6 also is where the severed vent ducts were found in the video of the tsunami rolling in. We have not gotten lots of images of 5-6 to tell for sure about ground fissures or sinking but with the faults found near the plant and the fissure at the end of #1 it would need serious review from a seismic standpoint. Or I should say it should. We know how that usually goes.
