  • @all In case anyone's wondering, my agenda here is the same as many of yours - I want to uncover the truths so that we can help prevent another unprecedented disaster like the one we've been watching unfold. I never for a moment imagined I could be as motivated as I have been in educating myself about this situation. Everything I've learnt about TEPCO, Daiichi, the technical goings-on of a nuke plant and this whole mega-Fuku-disaster has been via the attention I've been able to give to this wonderful online community since March. There's an incredible amount of vital/fascinating information shared and discussed on our boards and it's truly staggering what we can all learn from each other with some independant thought and a little respect for each other. I'm utterly grateful to everyone who's been contributing to a full and honest understanding of the horror that we, and our Japanese friends in particular, now have to deal with. Also, on a personal level you're helping me cope massively. The situation is grim and we know it. But, if while we're striving to improve things we find we do have to go through all this again with some other monstrous NPP, then we MUST - we WILL - be better prepared. :)

  • Disaster drills held at Hamaoka nuke power plant

Workers at a suspended nuclear power plant in central Japan have held a practice drill for a possible huge earthquake and tsunami.

The emergency drill was held at Chubu Electric Power Company's Hamaoka plant on Thursday, the 88th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake.

The plant on the Pacific Ocean has been suspended by the government, following the crippling of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant by the March 11th quake and tsunami.

1,000 workers took part in the drill, which assumed that the plant had lost all external power after being struck by a tsunami triggered by a quake of 6-plus on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7.

They simulated restoring power to a reactor building by connecting a 150-meter-long cable to a back-up generator installed outside.

A senior official with the utility said the drill helped confirm the effectiveness of a back-up plan to shut down reactors at low temperatures without exposing fuels in a major earthquake.

Kanji Nishida added that the utility is considering joint drills with the local administration and residents, to provide them peace of mind.

  • More radiation exposure at Fukushima plant

Japan's nuclear safety agency has instructed Tokyo Electric Power Company, the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station, to improve safety measures for workers at the crippled plant.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said another worker at the power plant was exposed to radiation while working on a treatment system for contaminated water on Wednesday.

The government agency said the male subcontractor was sprayed with radioactive water. It noted the water was cleaned off him after the man finished taking a radiation test.

It added the total amount of radiation which the man was exposed to during the shift was below the limit, and that it did not affect his health.

Earlier the same day, 2 other workers were showered with radioactive water while working on a contaminated water processing system.

On Sunday, 2 workers from the power company were exposed to beta rays, which are another type of radiation. The incident revealed that the utility had not set exposure limits for beta rays.

The agency instructed TEPCO to improve safety measures, saying the company failed to make use of past experiences with radiation exposure. It also said the utility company was late in reporting the latest incident.

  • Nuclear industry watchdogs warn the North Anna nuclear plant may be leaking radioactive tritium due to damage in underground pipes from the Virginia earthquake.

However officials quoted the plant owner as saying the plant was operating normally on backup generators. We then learned that one of the four generators at the plant failed within minutes of being activated.

That was followed by assurances that no radiation was leaked from the plant even as the plant operator admitted the next day they were forced to vent steam from the reactor to prevent a Fukushima style “hydrogen” explosion at the reactor. While officials still asserted the plant was operating safely it begged the question of why the reactor needed to vent steam if the reactor was indeed being properly cooled.

The operator then admitted that radiation had in fact been leaked from the plant, but downplayed the leakage by saying the amount was miniscule and was inline with normal operations, even though the plant was shut down and was not be ran under “normal operation” procedures.

The dam at the nuclear plant has also been classified as a high-hazard by engineers and a local CBS affiliate in fact found over 2o inches of water was lost from the dam following the quake.

Complicating matters even further is officials gave conflicting statements about what triggered the shutdown at the nuclear plant. Some officials were quoted as saying the plant was manually shut down, claims which other officials said were untrue saying the quake triggered an automatic shutdown.
