  • purposed stress test for reactors

    by dean 9/2/2011 10:45:28 PM

  • Nearly 90% of Japan's nuke reactors to be halted

One of the reactors at a nuclear power plant in southwestern Japan is due to be halted for regular inspections on Sunday. With the planned shutdown of this and 5 other facilities, nearly 90 percent of the country's nuclear reactors will be offline ahead of winter.

Shikoku Electric Power Company says it will suspend operations of the No.1 reactor at the Ikata power plant for routine checks on Sunday.

The utility wants to restart the plant's No.3 reactor, which has already been shut down for routine inspections. It plans to report on the results of the so-called "stress tests" on the reactor by the end of the month. The government requires the safety test for all suspended reactors before they can be restarted.

Other utilities, including Kansai Electric and Hokuriku Electric, are also conducting stress tests with the goal of restarting halted reactors in anticipation of a rise in electricity demand this winter.

However, there are hurdles to be cleared. The country's 2 nuclear safety watchdogs must screen the results of the tests, and then the central government will decide whether to restart the reactors. Finally, any restart has to be approved by the municipalities hosting the reactors.

Japan's remaining 6 active reactors will be halted for regular inspections by next spring. If the currently suspended reactors are not back online by then, all the country's nuclear facilities will be out of operation.

  • So if Japan can function with 90% of the reactors shut off is it really a big deal to shut down the other 10%?

  • @All hi! Talas' track is again more westerly then previously forecast(good for fuku npp!), the centre is about to cross the coast. There have been some massive 24 hour rainfall totals recorded along the southern coastline with 20 stations recording above 300mm+ and rank 1 being 710mm recorded at YANASE station(24 hour rainfall record for all of Japan is about 850mm set during Ma-on this year) but the rain remains in sporadic grouping. check at ameras to see if you are interested- agora.ex.nii.ac.jp . Hopefully fuku npp will continue to dodge the higher rainfall totals and the westerly track will certainly help this! Gota run again! @ All stay well!

  • In context with the discussion on hardened venting with @es the other day, I found interesting details. Evaluation from the Fukushima Task Force Review ( www.nrc.gov , p 40):
"The process at Fukushima Dai-ichi Units 1, 2, 3, and 4 for venting the wetwell involves opening one ac-powered motor-operated valve to permit air pressure to open air-operated valves in the vent line, and then opening another ac-powered motor-operated valve in line with the air-operated valves, permitting containment pressure to impact a rupture disk designed to open if containment pressure is significantly above design pressure. If all of these actions are successful, the containment would vent directly to the plant stack, and containment integrity could be reestablished by closing either the in-line ac-powered motoroperated valve or the air-operated valves. In a prolonged SBO situation, these actions would not be possible from the control room because of the loss of ac power and the depletion of the batteries providing dc control power for the valves. It is unclear whether the operators were ever successful in venting the containment in Unit 1, 2, or 3. The operators’ inability to vent the containments complicated their ability to cool the reactor core, challenged the containment function, and likely resulted in the leakage of hydrogen gas into the reactor building, precipitating significant explosions in Units 1, 3, and 4."

  • @ hi all. I love scribble humour.  Lillymunster I got dog in that size. Edano I will have that funny lunch! ;) Can you tell me about this worker on the Fuku video – isn’t he reading from a paper in his hand? Is there a white slash over his hand?? You are so clever with pictures - It is not possible in any way to do some tricks with the sound so it’s possible to hear what he is saying…?
For some reason, I am not able to enter YouTube, but I think this was the link:
    www.youtube.com
If not, Enenews has it covered here:

That reminds me of another thing: If – for some reason – internet or el supply should not be available – is there a way to get online or keep in touch in such a situation?

  • Fukushima presses TEPCO for broader compensation

Fukushima Prefecture has pressed the operator of the disaster-stricken Daiichi nuclear plant to broaden the scope of the firm's compensation program.

The prefecture's Vice Governor Yusaku Matsumoto and local industry leaders visited the Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, in Tokyo on Friday and met the firm's President Toshio Nishizawa.

The meeting came 3 days after TEPCO announced that it will start procedures for full-fledged compensation this month, based on a government interim guideline.

At the meeting, Fukushima agricultural cooperative head Tokuichi Shojo said the guideline does not fully reflect the damage caused by the nuclear disaster.

Shojo suggested that compensation also cover damage not specified in the guideline, as well as people who fled their homes under their own decisions. He added that all prefecture residents should be compensated for mental suffering.

Nishizawa apologized for the trouble and inconvenience the company has caused, and said the utility will do its best to provide compensation.

TEPCO is to begin sending out applications for full-scale compensation on September 12th.

After the meeting, Matsumoto told reporters that he conveyed the wishes of all 2-million Fukushima residents, and that he wants Tokyo Electric to show more sincerity.
