purposed stress test for reactors
by dean 9/2/2011 10:45:28 PM

Nearly 90% of Japan's nuke reactors to be haltedOne of the reactors at a nuclear power plant in southwestern Japan is due to be halted for regular inspections on Sunday. With the planned shutdown of this and 5 other facilities, nearly 90 percent of the country's nuclear reactors will be offline ahead of winter.
Shikoku Electric Power Company says it will suspend operations of the No.1 reactor at the Ikata power plant for routine checks on Sunday.
The utility wants to restart the plant's No.3 reactor, which has already been shut down for routine inspections. It plans to report on the results of the so-called "stress tests" on the reactor by the end of the month. The government requires the safety test for all suspended reactors before they can be restarted.
Other utilities, including Kansai Electric and Hokuriku Electric, are also conducting stress tests with the goal of restarting halted reactors in anticipation of a rise in electricity demand this winter.
However, there are hurdles to be cleared. The country's 2 nuclear safety watchdogs must screen the results of the tests, and then the central government will decide whether to restart the reactors. Finally, any restart has to be approved by the municipalities hosting the reactors.
Japan's remaining 6 active reactors will be halted for regular inspections by next spring. If the currently suspended reactors are not back online by then, all the country's nuclear facilities will be out of operation.

'Loach lunch' sold at Noda's hometown
Photo shows a box lunch sold by a restaurant in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, hometown of Japan's new Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, to mark his inauguration on Sept. 2, 2011. On rice is dried laver cut in the shape of a loach, the humble bottom-feeding fish that Noda compared himself to in a recent speech. (Kyodo) english.kyodonews.jp

@Edano I thought that was really a shriveled up fish.

@lillymunster yeah it looks .... strange ?
by Edano 9/2/2011 11:06:52 PM

So if Japan can function with 90% of the reactors shut off is it really a big deal to shut down the other 10%?
by lillymunster 9/2/2011 11:07:15 PM

Laver is a dried
edible algae probably adding to the shriveled fish texture.

@Edano bento is supposed to have decorations on everything. Faces are common decoration. I have seen lots where they cut up a hot dog to look like an octopus.

It was done with a sarcastic tone.

Fukushima presses TEPCO for broader compensation
Fukushima Prefecture has pressed the operator of the disaster-stricken Daiichi nuclear plant to broaden the scope of the firm's compensation program.
The prefecture's Vice Governor Yusaku Matsumoto and local industry leaders visited the Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, in Tokyo on Friday and met the firm's President Toshio Nishizawa.
The meeting came 3 days after TEPCO announced that it will start procedures for full-fledged compensation this month, based on a government interim guideline.
At the meeting, Fukushima agricultural cooperative head Tokuichi Shojo said the guideline does not fully reflect the damage caused by the nuclear disaster.
Shojo suggested that compensation also cover damage not specified in the guideline, as well as people who fled their homes under their own decisions. He added that all prefecture residents should be compensated for mental suffering.
Nishizawa apologized for the trouble and inconvenience the company has caused, and said the utility will do its best to provide compensation.
TEPCO is to begin sending out applications for full-scale compensation on September 12th.
After the meeting, Matsumoto told reporters that he conveyed the wishes of all 2-million Fukushima residents, and that he wants Tokyo Electric to show more sincerity.
