  • @lillimunster TY for the tip. Just told my friend my cell phone stink, so maybe I should get a smart phone/iphone (I’ll check out what that really is. ;) )
About the worker- maybe he had written down on his smartphone what he had planned to say in front of the camera? He really made me curious.
    by Mona 9/3/2011 1:57:42 PM

  • @Mona now I am wondering if he said something? I assumed he was working a crane or guiding someone past the camera but we really don't know for sure so anything is possible.

I know the scribble page works on Android and iPhone phones. I use my phone to check in when I am not home or in the office all day. I also use my phone when our power fails to do internet things.
    by lillymunster 9/3/2011 2:04:55 PM

  • @Lillimunster I guess you are right that he was just talking to someone behind the camera, sounds very reasonalble. After all it is the atmc.jp who put the video out, and that is Japanese authorities, right? But still, if I had the equippement, I probably would have checked it, because I am hopelessly curious. ;)
    by Mona 9/3/2011 2:15:23 PM

  • @M.I.A TY for the video- even if I hope I will not be needing one like this in Scandinavia? ;)

  • Hi all! In a cafe at Cornell. Just checking in.

  • I'm staying with my friend who is the editor of Japan Focus and he is very pessimistic about the new PM.
by bo via mobile 9/3/2011 2:35:38 PM

  • @Bo Hi. In what way is he pessimistic about the new PM? Don't know anything about him.
    by Mona 9/3/2011 2:37:48 PM

  • @Lillymunster. When I look at the first 3 min of the long version of the worker-video(...yes, curious I know...) it looks like he is taking time on someone, looking on timer on cell phone, and say go when he ppoints at "the camera".. ;)

  • Feels he will reverse the course charted by Kan and is committed to a nuclear future for Japan. Also, very pro-US military.
by bo via mobile 9/3/2011 2:41:57 PM

  • @Bo nuclear future dosen't sound good. What does the Japanese people think about that? Are there any protests
    ?
    by Mona 9/3/2011 2:53:39 PM

  • @Lillymunster I am sure the worker is counting for a mate- 5 min. Then he shows up right infront of the camera - that is 10 sec, and I'm sure he is kidding with us, knowing we will wonder what he is doing. :) Fun. :)
    by Mona 9/3/2011 2:56:38 PM

  • I'm very out of touch while traveling but his thought is that the PM has said that Japan needs to think about eliminating nukes, but not in the short term. He feels the new guy will try to manage public opinion but that he is very on board with the sentiments of the nuclear village.
by bo via mobile 9/3/2011 2:58:55 PM

  • What has been the news around here? Woefully out of touch while travelling!
by bo via mobile 9/3/2011 3:01:27 PM

  • @Bo TY for that info. @Bo I "found"
a must see (1,5h) Chernobyl video: What happened under and after the accident. How life continued as before because people didn’t know the danger. And how it was downplayed. HOW THEY DISCUSSED HOW TO SOLVE THE RADIATION PROBLEM We see they dig a tunnel under the reactor to prevent the magma to seep down to the water below and create a nuclear explotion.Sounds familiar. 10 000 miners start many meters away because of radiation, dig a tunnel and under the reactor a room of 2x32 meters, to be filled with sement. Goal 12m a day. 50 degrees in the tunnel, protection impossible because of damp and dust. Autentic filming.

  • @Mona thanks. I will check the video when I have a good connection. Well done!
by bo via mobile 9/3/2011 3:15:46 PM

  • Is there any evidence yet of a similar operation happening at Fukushima? I would think the risk of such an explosion there would be even higher.
by bo via mobile 9/3/2011 3:23:55 PM

  • Well off to set my exhibition up. See you all soon!
by bo via mobile 9/3/2011 3:34:02 PM

  • @dean, thanks! The animation is insanely complex, almost 200 layers in Photoshop!! It's like a skyscraper with floor after floor. At least grouping contents per frame makes it manageable.
    by Ian 9/3/2011 5:01:56 PM

  • @bo, would be nice if you could video and youtube post scenes from the exhibit. Good luck!

  • Cesium beyond limit found in Chiba, Saitama tea

The Japanese health ministry says radioactive cesium exceeding the government's safety limit has been detected in tea leaves in Chiba and Saitama prefectures, near Tokyo.

This is the ministry's first discovery of radioactive substances beyond the legal limit since it began unannounced tests of food products last month.

The tests were started in order to verify local government data using different numbers and kinds of food samples.

The ministry says the leaves of one type of tea from Chiba Prefecture contained 2,720 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram, more than 5 times the safety limit.

Meanwhile, a maximum level of 1,530 becquerels per kilogram was detected in 3 kinds of tea leaves from Saitama Prefecture.

The prefectural governments of Chiba and Saitama say they will investigate where the teas were grown and how much has made its way to market.

They say they will order tea producers to recall their product, if necessary.

"The storage capacity of U.S. reactor unit spent fuel pools ranges from less than 2,000 assemblies to nearly 5,000 assemblies, with an average storage capacity of approximately 3,000 spent fuel assemblies. Typically, the U.S. spent fuel pools are filled with spent fuel assemblies up to approximately three-quarters of their capacity."

  • @Edano Dominion appears to be in total denial. I sure hope all the NRC inspectors get to the bottom of it and don't just let them restart. Calhoun wants to restart asap. I have not looked at the total inspection list but it has to pass NRC at least.
