  • i mean, the plant may pass the tests, but if a 5.8 is possible in this region, then a 6.1 is possible as well. i doubt that a plant can be adequarely upgraded to a higher seismic shock. this is madness.

  • they had a lot of luck, for sure.
    by Edano 9/3/2011 9:15:38 PM

  • @Edano quake was 5.8. Design basis is 5.9 to 6.0. Claiming everything is spiffy and nobody should question restarting it is denial and insane. I want to know what all the underground structures look like. Even if they managed to pass it this time that was a major close call and the reactor straddles the fault line. Another stronger quake could tear the whole thing apart with a good shift.

  • @lillymunster agreed.

  • Contaminated soil from western Tokyo proven with spectrographic reading. The tester is pro-nuclear (which might be a bit unfair to say, she'd probably call her self a 'nuclear realist', but if you don't say their risks exceed their benefits, you're 'pro' in my book).

by Hank Scorpio 9/3/2011 10:31:27 PM

  • @Hank Scorpio are they probably due to movement in the North American plate?

According to the data from Fukushima Prefecture, 13,000 becquerels/kg of cesium-134, and 15,000 becquerels/kg of cesium-137 were detected from the mushroom.

    by elainekirk 9/3/2011 11:14:56 PM

  • @elainekirk yes. Someone was arrested in Britain a few months ago for smuggling wild mushrooms from eastern Europe. I think they set of the radiation detection equipment at the airport.

  • @elainekirk well, yes it does. :-) Grocery shopping in Japan must really stink right now. Caught a translated tweet this morning off the translation FB group. Someone said their local grocery cut 40% of their Japanese produced food and is replacing it with imports.

  • @lillymunster yes gov shot themselves in the foot good and proper letting production continue and it is the farmers who suffered they couldnt claim compensation so they carried on and have now lost everthing including their good name

  • @lillymunster I have resorted to trawling their sites for news as they dont give it out with any attempt at informing the public it is there
    by elainekirk 9/3/2011 11:33:26 PM

  • @elainekirk yes. It starts operating in October. They will charge a small fee for use but people can come in and someone will walk them through testing their food samples. I think it is a neat idea, someone can test the things they frequently consume.

  • So what would happen if someone consumed 28,000 becquerels of radiation?
    by lillymunster 9/4/2011 12:21:31 AM

  • According to these guidelines apps.who.int 1 Bq of ingested Cs-137 corresponds to an effective absorbed dose of 1x10e-8 Sv in adults, summing up to a total dose of 2.8x10e-4 Sv or 0.28 milliSv, if she/he ate 28,000 Bq Cs-137. Anything could happen.

  • The link without , : apps.who.int
by Peter Melzer 9/4/2011 1:25:40 AM

  • For Cs-134, the conversion factor is the same. Thus , the absorbed dose for 28,000 Bq remains 0.28 milliSv. I suggest to refrain from eating a kilo of 'shrooms.
