  • @all Current Tepco cam shows no remnants of a crane positioned like the one that fell, and in fact has a crane pointed in the opposite direction, but still relatively close to 3 and 4. Help me out a little, because the postion of the farthest crane does not look consistant between the crash video and current cam. In the crash video it appears to be to the right of the tower and in the current Tepco cam it appears to be positioned to the left of the tower.

  • @smoss , we must make sure the boom actually fell on structures. The boom came down kind of slow, which makes me still think this could have been an intended lowering.

  • @Peter I would agree. I'm still questioning the lack of a time stamp and the relative positions of the cranes in current time as compared to the video.

  • @all Fukushima Daiichi No. 3 RPI continuity test
TEPCO has reported the results of a series of tests to determine wire continuity in the position indication probes (Rod Position Indication equipment) on No. 3 reactor plant at Fukushima Daiichi in order to attempt, indirectly, to determine condition of the bottom of the reactor pressure vessel.

As with this same test at No. 1 plant, TEPCO announces that the results are not in any way conclusive. None of the detectors passed any test. Below is an illustration from TEPCO just like that we saw for No. 1 plant. Of course it differs in that there are many more fuel elements, control rods and there are five sections or divisions of RPI equipment that don't match up neatly to quadrants. TEPCO will in all likelihood complete this same test for No. 2 plant in the next day or two and we'll place that illustration here as well.

So far there is still no solid evidence as to the exact condition of the bottom of any of the pressure vessels beyond what we've been reporting on this blog for many months.

  • Troy Davis Executed: Death Row Inmate Killed After U.S. Supreme Court Denies Stay Of Execution
    www.huffingtonpost.com

JACKSON, Ga. -- Georgia executed Troy Davis on Wednesday night for the murder of an off-duty police officer, a crime he denied committing right to the end as supporters around the world mourned and declared that an innocent man was put to death.

Defiant to the end, he told relatives of Mark MacPhail that his 1989 slaying was not his fault. "I did not have a gun," he insisted.

"For those about to take my life," he told prison officials, "may God have mercy on your souls. May God bless your souls."

Davis was declared dead at 11:08. The lethal injection began about 15 minutes earlier, after the Supreme Court rejected an 11th-hour request for a stay.

The court did not comment on its order, which came about four hours after it received the request and more than three hours after the planned execution time.

  • @@lillymunster - cesium is the biggest source of radiation. Clearly there's enough of it at that one 4SV/hr spot to kill somebody, if it didn't already kill the "acute lukemia" guy. But evidence from Chernobyl seems to be if it doesn't kill you from radiation sickness at 1+SV, 30K bq per meter may not hurt anybody. Could I possibly be right? That would be the anti-busby position, that these low levels don't justify the fears being put out by Busby and Moret and to a leser degree, Arnie. artmuke stronium, plutonium etc. there are lots of other things being found in Japan that cause cancer.

Prosecutors accept complaint against antinuclear actor Yamamoto

    SAGA, Japan, Sept. 22, Kyodo

Prosecutors in Saga Prefecture in southwestern Japan have accepted a criminal complaint against actor Taro Yamamoto on suspicion of trespassing and interference with public duty when he entered a local government building to file an antinuclear power protest.

A 27-year-old man filed the complaint against Yamamoto, 36, and several others over a July 11 incident at the Saga prefectural offices, where the people demanded along with about 150 activists that the local government not allow the restart of two idled reactors at the Genkai nuclear power station.

They handed a letter of request to a prefectural official and left the building after Saga Gov. Yasushi Furukawa declined to meet with the group.

The man, who lives in Kyoto, calls for severe punishment in the complaint, according to sources at the prosecutors' office.

''An act of entering a prefectural office by getting over a barrier significantly deviates from freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution. It is unacceptable in a nation abiding by the rule of the law,'' the complaint says.

In May, Yamamoto fired his agent after having his role in a television drama canceled apparently due to his antinuclear remarks following the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant triggered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

  • Typhoon Roke spares Fukushima plant

Typhoon Roke has inflicted no major damage to the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The typhoon approached the plant on Wednesday night, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the area.

Rainwater flowed into the basement of the turbine building of the Number 6 reactor.

Of the number one through 4 reactor buildings whose basements are flooded with contaminated water, water levels rose by 44 centimeters at the number one reactor building, and by about 10 centimeters at the other 3 reactor buildings due to rain.

The operation of equipment to remove salt from contaminated water was also stopped due to rain.
Tokyo Electric Power Company said several cameras to monitor the plant compound and amounts of water injected into the reactors also suffered glitches likely due to rain.

Radioactive iodine spread south of nuclear plant

A Japanese government survey shows that radioactive iodine emitted from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant spread not only northwestward but also to the south of the plant.

The science ministry sampled soil at 2,200 locations, mostly in Fukushima Prefecture, in June and July, and created a map indicating the extent of the radioactive contamination as of June 14th.

Officials were able to obtain data for iodine 131 at only 400 locations, because of its short half-life of 8 days.

The latest map shows that iodine 131 spread northwest of the plant, just like cesium 137 as indicated on an earlier map. But the substance was also confirmed south of the plant at relatively high levels.
The researchers found that accumulation levels of iodine 131 were higher than those of cesium 137 in coastal areas south of the plant.

Ministry officials say clouds that moved southward over the plant apparently caught large amounts of iodine 131 that were emitted at the time.

Iodine 131 could cause thyroid cancer through internal exposure. The ministry is therefore trying to determine at what levels the substance spread immediately after the accident at the plant in March.

  • Business leader asks for nuclear plant resumption

A business group leader in the Kansai region has asked the government to quickly resume operations at suspended nuclear power plants as a way to resolve continued power shortages in Japan.

The head of the Kansai Economic Federation, Shosuke Mori, made the request when he met with Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura in Tokyo on Thursday.

Mori said electricity supply is projected to become tighter during the winter, causing more companies to shift production overseas and to cut workforce. He said Japanese industries will face even more difficulties if this situation continues.

Fujimura said he is aware of the severity of power shortages in the Kansai region.
He said the government plans to reopen nuclear plants one by one, after conducting thorough safety inspections and gaining the understanding of local communities.

Since the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, many nuclear reactors in Japan remain shutdown after undergoing regular inspections.

  • Troy Davis executed in Georgia

The US state of Georgia has executed an African-American man over the murder of a police officer 22 years ago, despite doubts about his guilt.

Troy Davis, who was 42, was put to death by lethal injection on Wednesday night, on charges of fatally shooting the white police officer in 1989. Davis had consistently maintained that he was innocent.

Many of his supporters staged a rally in front of the prison from morning, asking for a stay of execution.

Seven of 9 witnesses who had initially said they'd seen Davis shoot the officer later recanted. Davis had been granted 3 stays of execution since 2007.

The case drew international attention as a symbol of the battle over the legitimacy of the death penalty and racial imbalance in the US justice system.

International human rights groups and other advocates had collected more than 600,000 petition signatures worldwide to ask for clemency.

  • Need to read the containment news article. They said unit 2 had a 3 meter hole in the torus (or suppression pool itself) months ago.

Just read it. Hole in containment on top of the hole in the suppression pool. From what I have been reading the RCIC can run dry or stop cooling when the buildings heat up so much the water is hot or boils off. The water flooding from suppression should have caused a pressure increase. Adding water in that situation is a risk for quick pressure spikes.

  • @Edano It might help explain the i131 that turned up in higher than expected numbers to the south of the plant. They were looking at it (because of half-life) as meaning that there was much more in the original releases than they expected, higher even than the cesium levels when they work it back by half-lives. Maybe it's not just old half-life remnants.
