  • Fukushima evacuee makes anti-nuclear speech in NY

A farmer in Fukushima Prefecture has urged people around the world to get rid of nuclear power plants, saying there is no such thing as safe nuclear power.

53-year Sachiko Sato from Kawamata Town spoke at a gathering in central New York on Thursday. The event, organized by a US anti-nuclear group, was attended by about 70 people.

Sato was forced to evacuate from Fukushima to neighboring Yamagata Prefecture with her family after the accident in March at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

Sato said the nuclear accident changed her life totally and that she wants people to know the hardship she has gone through after being forced to abandon her farmland.

Sato called on people all over the world to work together to get rid of nuclear plants, saying that when one thinks about the future of children what they have to do is clear.

  • @Liz selling them radiation tablets is not helping it is proffiting from them in my opinion
    by elainekirk 9/23/2011 9:57:40 AM

  • elainekirk, "help" was meant ironic.

  • @Liz thank you @Liz I am just out of bed and still on my first coffee and you scared me rigid , I am awake now though !

  • a friend sent me this debunking of the ever terrible bbc www.youtube.com
    by elainekirk 9/23/2011 10:50:58 AM

  • @Peter It sounds like the idea is right that calcium can replace out stronium but the ability to do so with pills sounds dubious.
    by lillymunster 9/23/2011 10:51:41 AM

  • @elainekirk that is the one Ian created. Was going to put that on the web page today. Some of the things that BBC
guy says are just jaw dropping
    by lillymunster 9/23/2011 10:52:56 AM

  • @lillymunster, I think about the decay some more. But the problem with Busby's idea is that the turnover in bone is very low.
    by Peter 9/23/2011 10:54:11 AM

  • @elainekirk I looked up the guy in the video yesterday. He is on a bunch of govt. sponsored groups related to nuclear physics and educating the public about science. I didn't find anything right away showing him on the payroll of any private nuke company but I don't know the subtle details of how things work in the UK. Govt PR hack job?
    by lillymunster 9/23/2011 10:55:14 AM

  • The guy in the BBC video put this on his twitter. I'm not impressed. So anyone who thinks he is biased is a conspiracy theorist. :-(

Interested to see how many watch #Horizon tonight and think I'm in pay of nuclear industry. Impossible to convince conspiracy theorists.

  • @Vivre They did some extensive work on that article on radiation & babies. The Yablokov study is somewhat controversial but the others I have not seen before and are from pretty well known journals. I want to get some more feedback from here on the information in their article before I do more with it. Good to see someone dug info on the subject. Most of what I have seen so far was just pictures.

    by elainekirk 9/23/2011 11:37:31 AM

  • lilly, we should add to this that taking the half-lives of cesium-137 and strontium-90 into account, which is roughly 30 years for both, would reduce the time we had to take the pills to 15 years.
    by Peter 9/23/2011 11:44:14 AM

  • @Peter I am still at a loss on the magnesium in Busby's pills. Magnesium can prevent muscle spasms. I couldn't find anything that showed Magnesium had radioprotective qualities

  • @lillymunster, I keep my eyes open for that.
    by Peter 9/23/2011 12:40:59 PM

  • ....and considering that the rate of calcium turnover might be greater in growing children than in adults, you would have to stuff your kids with even more pills.

  • @lillymunster , uuuh, Ikea, the little things they have are so nice and cheap, bu then when the blue bag is full a wake-up call awaits you at the register. But the meatballs and the lingon berry sauce are so tasty. I am glad we are far away, too.
    by Peter 9/23/2011 1:04:48 PM

  • @Peter I usually have a built in limiter since we usually take the Volkswagen to Minneapolis I can't buy furniture. :-)
    by lillymunster 9/23/2011 1:09:54 PM

  • We should also qualify the term PROTECTION with calcium. In order to actually prevent uptake of cesium and/or strontium, you would need to begin taking the pills before incorporation, in analogy to the iodide pills. Truly RADIOPROTECTIVE agents, that is compounds that protect cells against the damage by ionizing radiation, would consist of scavengers for FREE RADICALS for example. I wonder whether Busby's pills contain anything that can serve that function.

  • @ pancer.. that curve is called the fission fragment yield curve and as you saw in the example there are a host of fission fragments that are around the two predominant mass numbers of 95 and 137.....it's used extensively in nuclear physics
