  • ".....down around there" sounds very specific, does not it?
    by Peter 9/24/2011 3:06:26 PM

  • @lillymunster The torus goes around the lower part of the RPV but it's hard to visualize when you just have the cross section diagram and no actual 3D model like the one I posted (which is linked up in my links on this page). The top of the torus is higher than the base mat but its bottom is lower and goes around it. That can cause some confusion. The torus is a quite wide tube like section running around the lower section of the RPV (dry well). If you have actual pictures of the torus it will make it easier to identify where the base mat is in relation to the torus. But it is definitely under the RPV. It wouldn't make any sense if it went across it. Then the RPV wouldn't be a RPV. Notice that the bottom section of the RPV is shaped as a sphere, it is not flat.

  • @lillymunster, based on the visible steam ejections and the infrared data, those look like breach / leak spots. Today's zoom-in shows the NW rim spot to be somewhat off the rim and coming from below, hence my observations below. My report suggests the containment cap lifted briefly. If so, it have have fallen back into place by the overhead crane impacting it or by its own weight.

  • @Peter even TEPCO has admitted melt throughs. That doesn't make any sense.
    by lillymunster 9/24/2011 3:10:25 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus I think your confusing terms. I was talking drywell, The reactor pressure vessel is up much higher. Water in the RPV doesn't tell us anything about water in the containment vessel.

  • @Pedro Jesus the sections in this on Peach bottom clearly describe locations of the various components of the torus and drywell floor pbadupws.nrc.gov
    by lillymunster 9/24/2011 3:13:42 PM

  • @lillymunster , perhaps the most significant piece of info is that tepco did not succeed in filling the rpvs with water above the fuel level.
    by Peter 9/24/2011 3:15:48 PM

  • @lillymunster I did misuse the term dry well under brackets down there; please disregard it (I hadn't had my coffee yet). And yes, the level of water inside the RPV doesn't tell us how much water there is in the dry well; I had stated that in one of my previous comments.

What I'm trying to explain to you is where the concrete base mat is located. It's way under the RPV itself. The RPV is wrapped by a steel containment and then by the steel reinforced concrete primary containment. The base mat is the base of the primary containment so there's still some portion of steel reinforced concrete to corrode through until the molten core reaches the base mat. Look at the 3D diagrams in this other document (which is also linked up in my links on this page). www.nrc.gov

The torus, as you know, is the tube like conduct that runs around the lower part of the RPV and below that. It's top is slightly above the base of the RPV and its bottom goes under below. The base mat should run under the RPV down to below the level of the torus' bottom. My doubt is whether it is covered by the water level or not. One of your diagrams clearly shows that it is and the other later one (with the estimate of where the molten core might have escaped the RPV) clearly shows otherwise. I'll ask for update on this when I come back.

I will have to go now. Got stuff to do (although is was supposed to be my only day off of the week). Greetings, see you all later.

  • Fukushima municipality heads concerned over lifting of evacuation advisory

    FUKUSHIMA, Japan, Sept. 24, Kyodo

Heads of five municipalities in Fukushima Prefecture affected by the ongoing nuclear crisis have aired concerns over the government's plan to lift its evacuation advisory in the event of an emergency, saying not enough has been done to ensure the safety of residents.

In recent interviews with Kyodo News, the chiefs of the five local governments said they were especially worried about the cleanup of radioactive substances released from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi plant and the disposal of radioactive waste. The Fukushima Daiichi plant, the source of the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, suffered massive damage due to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The advisory covers the entire town of Hirono and parts of Naraha, the village of Kawauchi, and the cities of Tamura and Minamisoma, where roughly 59,000 residents have been told to be prepared to evacuate or remain indoors in the event of an emergency. About 25,000 have evacuated. english.kyodonews.jp

    by elainekirk 9/24/2011 6:56:41 PM

  • @lillymunster , elaine, I just saw the shoes. Unbelievable! I wonder how that man could hide the fact that he was leaving the containment in socks.
    by Peter 9/24/2011 6:56:51 PM

  • @Peter maybe he was the man wearing baby blue gloves sitting at a desk and he just got bored and thought he would make his job more interesting and cool his feet at the same time
    by elainekirk 9/24/2011 6:58:42 PM

  • I just can't fathom how someone lost their shoes. Wouldn't they have tried to fish them out with something?
    by lillymunster 9/24/2011 6:59:24 PM

  • @lillymunster how does stuff get in there is it via the reactor
    by elainekirk 9/24/2011 7:01:43 PM

  • @elainekirk they can open up the torus and there are two catwalks inside it. I don't think something like a piece of ducttape could end up in the supression chamber so they must have dropped them inside the torus
    by lillymunster 9/24/2011 7:18:35 PM
