  • @elainekirk I think those are new.

@all the video of unit 2 had the boundary fence like the green one seen in Elaine's refueling document but it has red covering/plastic on it? The pictures from tours we gleaned seemed to show the reactor floor without a boundary fence around the reactor well when the concrete plug is in and it is running. Any idea why they might have had the boundary up?

  • A logical deductive analysis ... Facts: (1) the new Tepco video shows the reactor well-cap steaming now www.youtube.com ; (2) the boiling point of water is 100°C lamar.colostate.edu (3) Tepco reports that the temp of the reactor's lower head is below the boiling point search.japantimes.co.jp . Ergo: the fuel is still boiling water (by Fact 1) and it is not located at the bottom of the reactor.

  • @Ian is anyone likely to tackle tepco on that? are they having any news conferences soon?

  • @Ian : about the steam explosion in the pedestal room in #2: it affords water on the drywell floor, but we couldn't find any hint that they flooded the drywell. what do you think ?
    by Edano 9/24/2011 10:38:06 PM

  • @elainekirk, good point, there's a press conference question!
    by Ian 9/24/2011 10:38:45 PM

  • @lillymunster, bottom of the reactor, where Tepco says it's below boiling temp. So the corium must have all leaked out of the reactor and is sitting somewhere below.
    by Ian 9/24/2011 10:40:06 PM

  • excellent commentary on unit 3 roof video by Ian. left this comment very good analysis, the round rim is clearly visible. So those "harmless" steam clouds WERE full of cesium and iodine, and the notion of "containment largely worked" is meaningless as far as cesium and iodine are concerned, and still left bits of uranium/plutonium all over the place from the big steam explosion. Does show a very neat seam between the core plug and the edge of the equipment pool. Should be simple to do a 3D shot from still from that video.
. Pretty obvious that all that cesium all over northern japan got out with the steam now by that stain where the steam was coming out. You should have the equipment pool labeled as well. Where did you get the floor plan? The entire upper-right corner of the floor is collapsed below the refueling level. They should have got this video the day after the blast, not 6 months later.
    by artnuke 9/24/2011 10:40:45 PM

  • @me, because with the steam we can know that water is being boiled.
    by Ian 9/24/2011 10:40:57 PM

  • @Edano do you mean Unit 3? I'm not sure there's any sign that the flooded the drywell of 3 by intention. But there are clues that it was flooded by leakage from the reactor.
    by Ian 9/24/2011 10:42:39 PM

  • @Ian nono, i meant #2.

  • @Edano, if I'd found that it could've saved me making a graphic! :)
    by Ian 9/24/2011 10:47:33 PM

  • #2 wasn't a hydrogen explosion. the torus was damaged by high pressure. there's the possibility of a steam explosion beneath the rpv which destroyed the torus. but there must have been water on the drywell bottom to make it work.
    by Edano 9/24/2011 10:49:36 PM

  • how do you add pictures??
    by artnuke 9/24/2011 10:49:41 PM

  • @artnuke upload them to tinypic.com and past the url in here.
    by Edano 9/24/2011 10:50:28 PM

  • @Edano, interesting! Steam explosions are always possible in meltdowns. Hydrogen explosion just become an end-of-the-road Tepco mantra that shut down all thought and even consideration of other well-known risk factors. Arnie long ago mentioned the Unit 2 explosion did more damage to the reactor because it didn't' vent like 1 and 3.

  • @artnuke, thanks! I wonder what's covering much of the heat signature of the fuel pool. I think you mentioned the odd unknown whereabouts of the fuel-pool crane. Maybe it's what's blocking pool heat. ??
    by Ian 9/24/2011 11:00:51 PM

  • @artnuke, nice! I wonder where the fitting carousel was located before the blast. Was it blown to the side?
    by Ian 9/24/2011 11:02:41 PM

  • I think you can pretty much see the four corners of the fuel pool from the aerial shots, and it's nowhere between the well cap or the south wall, so it must have been blown sky high and back into the turbine building, but they won't send anybody into there or even take a picture from the roof to see what is down there - they supposedly patched up the hole but did not ask anybody to look inside. The fitting cap was obvious when you zoomed in behind the IAEA guys, it's tipped up at a 45 degree angle, but hard to see from most angles. I did a 3D shot and it sticks right out, I'll post that.
    by artnuke 9/24/2011 11:04:12 PM

  • @artnuke, my guess for the pool-crane is it got blown out the south side, perhaps with that initial fist-shaped plume that punches out the south side and has the fire. But that's just a shot in the dark. I recall when you found the fitting carousel. Perhaps from pre-tsunami photos we could determine where it's parked. It was certainly at least tipped over.
