Food inspectors and consumers on Thursday questioned the effectiveness of food importing regulations after large amounts of organophosphate in frozen "gyoza" dumplings made in China were blamed for sickening scores of people nationwide.
The health ministry meanwhile admitted that although frozen imported food is generally inspected for harmful or unauthorized ingredients, it is not checked for pesticides like the one that was found in the tainted meat and vegetable dumplings.

A spokesman for Japan Frozen Foods Inspection Corp., a government-designated food inspector, said it was the first time Japan has experienced a food-poisoning case of this type.

  • Radioactive strontium found in Yokohama, 250 km from Fukushima plant

    YOKOHAMA, Oct. 12, Kyodo

Radioactive strontium exceeding normal quantities has been detected in sediment from atop an apartment building in Yokohama, some 250 kilometers from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, city officials said Wednesday.

While the discovery of 195 becquerels of strontium 90 in the rooftop sediment has fueled concerns that leaked radiation may have spread further than the government had expected, the officials said the city office is carefully examining where the material came from.

This is the first time strontium at a concentration of over 100 becquerels per kilogram has been found beyond 100 km from the Fukushima plant. The strontium 90 was detected in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, by a private agency that conducted the test upon the request of a resident. english.kyodonews.jp

  • TEPCO holds disaster drill at crisis-hit Fukushima nuclear plant

    TOKYO, Oct. 12, Kyodo

A disaster drill was held at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant by its operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. for the first time since the March earthquake and tsunami triggered the country's worst nuclear accident there.

The drill was conducted under the scenario that an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 occurred near the plant, disabling the reactor cooling system, such as the pumps providing water to the furnaces and a tank storing the decontaminated water for reuse to water the reactors.

About 30 people took part in the exercise designed to check a series of antidisaster procedures ranging from measuring radiation levels to installing hoses to carry seawater to cool the reactors, the utility, or TEPCO, said. The government's nuclear safety inspectors were also present. english.kyodonews.jp

  • Japanese sake tested for radiation

Japan's tax officials have conducted preliminary radiation checks on sake and other alcoholic beverages in the wake of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The National Tax Agency conducted a trial test on Wednesday ahead of extensive assessment. The agency will conduct tests of all breweries and factories located within 150 kilometers of the troubled plant. Brewing facilities outside the radius will also be randomly tested.

Checks will investigate if either water used for brewing or alcoholic products have radioactive materials. At the trial on Wednesday a testing apparatus called a survey meter for measuring radiation was used. The officials poured sake and wine to the equipment and recorded the results.
The officials say they only detected normal levels of background radiation.

The agency says that if high levels of radioactive materials are detected, it will send samples to a government-backed alcoholic research institute in Hiroshima, western Japan for detailed analysis.
If radioactive materials above the government-set limit are detected in the analysis, the agency will notify related prefectures and ask them to take necessary measures, including banning shipments.

The agency plans to carry out the tests at 6 of its regional tax bureaus as early as next week.

The agency will release all test results on its website.
Rice and barley, the main ingredients for the alcoholic beverages, have already been tested for radiation.
The agency hopes the testing will put consumers at ease.

  • All rice in Fukushima Pref. cleared for shipment

All rice harvested in Fukushima Prefecture this year has been cleared for shipment, with levels of radioactive material below the government set standard.

The results of final post-harvest tests at 37 locations in Nihonmatsu City and Miharu Town were released on Wednesday. Levels of radioactive material at all sites were below the government set limit of 500 becquerels per kilogram.

After the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in March, the prefecture carried out pre- and post-harvest tests at more than 1,700 locations in 48 municipalities where rice was planted this year.

Rice planting has not been allowed in the no-entry zone and evacuation zone around the facility and where more than 5,000 becquerels of cesium was detected in soil.

Previous articles mentioned that OPPD does not have the money in their accounts to cover the repairs. Now they want FEMA (taxypayers) to pay for the cost of buying power on the commodity market while Ft. Calhoun was out of commission. • Hi@all, this study might be interesting for comparing the rice contamination. Monitoring 90Sr and 137Cs in rice, wheat and soil in Japan from 1959 to 2000
We monitored the radioactive contamination of rice (unpolished and polished), wheat (wheat grain and wheat flour), and paddy and upland soils collected annually from 17 agricultural fields in Japan over 42 years from 1959 to 2000. In 1963, when the largest annual precipitation of radioactive fallout was observed, the 90Sr and 137Cs concentrations in rice and wheat reached their maximum, 0.27 Bq/kg for 90Sr and 4.2 Bq/kg for 137Cs in polished rice and 12 Bq/kg for 90Sr and 44 Bq/kg for 137Cs in wheat grain. The concentrations of 90Sr and 137Cs in the plowed layer of paddy and upland soils reached their maximum from 1963 to 1966. After 1966, the concentrations of 90Sr and 137Cs in rice, wheat, and soils gradually declined. Due to the Chernobyl accident in 1986, an increased concentration of 137Cs was found in some wheat grains harvested in areas that had been contaminated by fallout at the heading time of wheat. On the other hand, the contamination of rice and soil was not obvious. The 90Sr and 137Cs concentrations in rice, wheat, and soils tended to be higher on the Japan Sea side than on the Pacific Ocean side, corresponding to the trends in the level of radioactive fallout. The 90Sr ratios for polished rice/unpolished rice and wheat flour/wheat grain were 0.2 and 0.3, and the 137Cs ratios for polished rice/unpolished rice and wheat flour/wheat grain were 0.4 and 0.5, respectively. The uptake of 90Sr by wheat was higher than that by rice, whereas the uptake of 137Cs by wheat was lower than that by rice.
