Nov. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Tokyo Electric Power Co. detected signs of possible nuclear fission at its crippled Fukushima atomic power plant in northern Japan, raising the risk of more radiation leaks.
The company, known as Tepco, began spraying boric acid on the No. 2 reactor at 2:48 a.m. Japan time in an attempt to prevent accidental chain reactions. Tepco said it may have found xenon, which is associated with nuclear fission, while examining gases taken from the reactor, according to an e-mailed statement today.

@all.. I am exhausted from my travel back home today and must rest.. will return in a few hours..

@dean hmm. I may ask a couple of veterinarians I know. That doesn't look like any textbook eye disorder and the cat's skull is distorted. The bunny with no ears had an explanation. It is actually quite common for earless bunnies. Mothers can over groom or bit off the ear buds when they are tiny and they don't grow ears. So that can have a non genetic cause. The kitten, never seen anything like that in practice or textbooks.

@dean oh my goodness
by elainekirk 11/2/2011 3:15:19 AM

Doing some quick googling on feline eye diseases, feline herpes virus can effect the eye but none of the examples are identical to that. Most swell the surrounding tissue, I found one with an outside growth but didn't look like the cat in the video exactly.

nuclides in the air at the upside of #2 reactor building www.tepco.co.jp
by elainekirk 11/2/2011 9:38:54 AM

Unit 2 at 10a.m. (Japan time) November 2nd
At 4:14 am on November 2, we adjusted the amount of water injection to
the reactor to approximately 3 m3/h through reactor feed water system
piping arrangement, and 7 m3/h core spray system water injection piping
arrangement.
On November 1, we conducted a nuclide analysis of emitted gas sampled by
the gas management system of the reactor containment vessel. It was found
out that there was a possibility that short-half-life radionuclide (xenon
133, 135) was detected. There has been no significant variation as a
result of our continuous monitoring of the temperature and the pressure
in the reactor, and the figures of the monitoring posts. However, just to
be safe we injected boric-acid solution through reactor water injection
line from 2:48 am to 3:47 am on November 2,
since it was undeniable that
fission reaction had occurred. www.tepco.co.jpby elainekirk 11/2/2011 9:41:47 AM

Morning! (afternoon-evening)
@Elaine - the last post where TEPCO admits fission - is that from the chart?

We only have a Japanese version of this at the moment so I will just link to the cover doc with the photo's

OMG - WTH?
by lillymunster 11/2/2011 10:40:28 AM

@lillymunster that is stupid foam is not a good idea , as an insulator yes but a sealant?????????
by elainekirk 11/2/2011 10:42:29 AM

The document appears to say it is in the turbine building. this quote above the picture: Stairs: Spread the scaffolding, and then covered with flame-retardant fireproof sheet, finished with a polyurethane foam
Staircase entrance door is closed or conduct sheet curing
by lillymunster 11/2/2011 10:43:15 AM

@lillymunster and right next to those projectiles and a flame retardent sheet is only useful if it covers something
by elainekirk 11/2/2011 10:45:50 AM

From the top of the doc, explaining why: [The purpose]
Unit 1 turbine building to 4, radioactive waste treatment building, the main process building, construction processing miscellaneous solid waste volume reduction
Ya, bunker building site, construction indoor dust concentration increases with decreasing ground water level of the residence buildings burning tool
To suppress, the obstruction of the openings leading to the underground work for the purpose of blocking the flow of large air
Implementation
by lillymunster 11/2/2011 10:46:06 AM

@lillymunster so they block the big air vent what have they done to mitigate pressure build up?
by elainekirk 11/2/2011 10:47:25 AM

are they just going to have wee hot spots they won't locate unit somebody pins them down probably after many workers have passed them
by elainekirk 11/2/2011 10:48:44 AM

It mentions as the water is done dust remains. Since the basements had really radioactive water in them maybe the water left behind radioactive muck that is really high rad? Not sure why they did that one staircase the way they did rather than just plastic.

Someone else warns of the potential for prompt criticality:
Professor Teruyuki Honda's big cities (Tokyo Nuclear Engineering Environment) to "If true, such as detection of xenon 135" on the assumption that spoke.
Even if there is a large critical, could lead to a Chernobyl-like explosion of the former Soviet Union, a zero is not seen as very low. However, Professor Honda, and country for TEPCO, "立Tazu to optimism, we should assume the worst," he said.
"Low potential" and to take all possible measures 甘Ezu, standby liquid in this sense was "a reasonable measure it." Because the trace amount detected, the generator may be seen as limited as described in

Former head of Hiroshima peace museum dies
Akihiro Takahashi, an atomic bomb survivor who later served as head of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, died of heart failure on Wednesday. He was 80.
Takahashi was born in Hiroshima in 1931. He was outside his junior high school, 1.4 kilometers from Ground Zero, when the bomb was dropped on the city in 1945.
He became head of the peace museum in 1979. During his 4-year tenure, Takahashi served as a guide to a number of visiting foreign dignitaries, including Pope John Paul II.
After leaving that post, he continued to speak about his experience as a "hibakusha" and repeatedly sent letters to US President Barack Obama urging him to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Takahashi met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in August 2010 when the UN chief visited the museum on the 65 anniversary of the bombing.
One month later, he was appointed the government's special envoy to promote a nuclear-free world.

@Edano Not sure if the peace institute and the museum are connected. I would assume so in some way.
