  • @Edano Unless someone accidentally burned a bunch of vials of i-131 in a regular incinerator... The odds of that would be low though. I think there is a pretty tight chain of custody at hospitals and that stuff has to be really expensive. I don't think someone would just dump it in the trash.

  • On Saturday, a group of reporters, including Martin Fackler of The New York Times, toured the plant. In this post, he describes his trip to the damaged facility:

About three dozen journalists — each wearing a protective suit, double gloves, a double layer of clear plastic booties over shoes, a hair cover and a respirator mask — were put onto two buses. Each of us was given a radiation detector.

  • @Edano it is on my to-do list for today along with that meltdown theory doc and compiling all the media reports from the plant today. I wasn't around much yesterday.

  • @Edano playing catch up a bit.

@all - any reports or photo galleries from news media reports at the plant are important. We never know who will witness something that sounds minor on the surface but could be a clue we have been missing.
    by lillymunster 11/12/2011 3:04:40 PM

  • from nyt post below (if we could only hack in to these cameras!): Next, we went into the Response Room, the plant’s crisis center. This was a large room, filled with men. (No women are working at plant.)One wall was filled with screens that mostly showed live images from around the plant. • @Edano J Village was a really nice sports complex before it became TEPCO's command center. They have had eight months to get it together. Much better than people living on gym floors with crackers and water to eat. I noticed they have body scanner machines set up at J Village now.

  • Iodine-131 source???? Google translate:
Berlin / Gundremmingen (DAPD-bwb). According to the atom IPPNW Medical Association, there was a serious leakage of high radioactivity at the Swabian Grundmemmingen nuclear power plant. At the beginning of the years revision in September the emissions suddenly increased extremely, the organization said on Friday in Berlin. The concentration of radioactive noble gases have at times reached "maximum in the 500-times above the normal value."
So far, the corresponding measured values for IPPNW information from the regulatory authorities and nuclear operators were only over a longer period than in middle-published values. Here, the emission peaks are sometimes questionable remained hidden. Therefore, the association now called "unaveraged values of all radioactive half-hour duty" of all plants in Germany.

The four Gundremmingen defective mixed oxide fuel, the recent revision of the block C were Gundremmingen nuclear power plant have discovered, yesterday, MEPs in the Environment Committee of the Bavarian Parliament busy. The parliamentarians voted for it concluded that all reports will be released to cause the defects in the existing use of MOX fuel in Gundremmingen. In addition, to be reported on the initiatives, such as defects can be avoided in future.

The chairman of the "Forum - together against the intermediate camp," suggested Raymond ridge, a series of errors. Likewise, the Greens. They had therefore introduced a motion in committee to stop the use of MOX fuel in nuclear power plant Gundremmingen to determine the cause. This was a failure on the majority of CSU and FDP, Green Party member of parliament said Christine comb our newspaper. With the requirement to publish all reports to cause defects in the existing use of MOX fuel elements, the Greens, however, had success. Have agreed to all the deputies in the parliament meeting yesterday. "It was gratifying," said Christine comb. It was "a completely different climate in the discussion" was remarkable.

  • @Liz regarding the first article: the high peak emission of noble gases (xenon) is a known problem on refuelling, but it is not an accident. the nuke companies only report average emissions, but not the refuelling peaks. luckily, xenon does nothing (not much) to health... but who knows ?
    by Edano 11/12/2011 5:24:04 PM

  • Thanx @Edano. Will keep searching for source.
    by Liz 11/12/2011 5:28:12 PM

  • @Liz yes, i read both articles. i think there has been no emission of iodine, only xenon. this can really contribute to children leukemia, but it cannot be the source of recent iodine emissions.

  • it seems a whole bunch of mox rods were leaking. dean told me that this is a worlwide problem. as soon as you open the containment cap, the noble gases flee, while other elements stay inside the fuel rods.
    by Edano 11/12/2011 5:32:50 PM

  • they call them "leakers".

  • "The Data picked up is most propably from Drnovo NPP
I’ve been watching this NPP in Drnovo ( in Slovenia)
in horror since August 17th this year
Since Fuku I’ve made it a habbit to watch everydays values that are being updated
Drnovo has been releasing since 17th of August high amounts of I-131, CS-137, CS-134, Co-69, T Alpha Art+T Beta Art
I’ve contacted various departments to NEVER receive an answer

As an example the measurements for today 12th Nov ending time 12.00 are as follows (i report max values)
    Location name SIAIR Drnov
    Station Name Drnovo
    LOngtude 15.5
    Latitude 45.9

    I-131 o.oo831 Bq/m cubique
    CS-137 0.446 ”
    CS-134 0.671 ”
    CO-60 0.347 ”
    T Beta art 0.0338
    T Beta art 0.467

This are extreemly high values and for all this months nobody ever reported anything

Today the station in Rovanjemi has also been picking up I-131, CS-134(5.4299E-07 Bq/m cub.) CS-137 (5.23E-07 Bq/mcub)and CO-60(7,o7E-07 Bq/mcub) but in very small amounts

All values have been taken from EURDEP site
