  • Biological Hazard in Brazil on Wednesday, 16 November, 2011 at 21:47 (09:47 PM) UTC.
    Description
Thousands of flesh-eating piranhas have appeared along a river beach popular with tourists in western Brazil, attacking unwary swimmers. A spokesman for the municipal government of Caceres in Mato Grosso state says at least 15 people have been bitten in the past two weeks off Daveron beach. Nobody has died, but some swimmers have lost toes, and spokesman Gonzaga Junior says others have lost chunks of their legs and ankles. Junior says piranhas are common in rivers on the outskirts of the city. But this is the first time they have appeared in waters off the beach inside the city. Large posters have been posted on the beach to warn swimmers about the fish. hisz.rsoe.hu

  • Police brace for huge nuclear waste protests
17 Nov 11 The police will deploy 19,000 officers to secure a shipment of German atomic waste from France to Lower Saxony next week amid expectations of huge anti-nuclear protests. Thousands of demonstrators will descend upon the northern German state on November 26, when the waste in a so-called Castor container heads from the La Hague reprocessing plant to Germany's nuclear waste depot in Gorleben.
Kerstin Rudek, the chairwoman of a citizens’ initiative in the surrounding Lüchow-Dannenberg district has said the protests would be peaceful.
Nevertheless, police are expecting a hard core of 300 protesters to attempt to disrupt the rail transport, in what has become a regular game of cat and mouse between authorities and anti-nuclear activists who try to block the waste shipments.
The protests revolve largely around the future of the Gorleben depot, which is supposed to be a temporary repository for nuclear waste while German officials decide whether it's fit to become a permanent storage site. Activists contend that the location is unsafe.
This year’s protests are expected to be particularly intense in light of the German government’s recent decision to phase out nuclear power after Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster and revelations that the nuclear industry attempted to influence public opinion before the 2009 elections through extensive lobbying activities.
Rudek said there would be “broad resistance from all age groups and social classes” including pensioners, farmers and children in a large demonstration of more than 10,000 people.
Police spokesman Friedrich Niehörster said Rudek’s organisation had “not really distanced itself from violence.”
He said police would take swift action in the event of violence or attempts to disrupt the transport by, for instance, blocking rail tracks or attempted sabotage.
In previous years police have complained of staffing problems caused by the numbers needed to accompany the transports.
Last year massive protests temporarily delayed the arrival of nuclear waste in Gorleben, with some activists even attempting to remove railway tracks.

  • Good morning @elainekirk Nuclear Gauge Stolen
Grand Prairie police are asking the public for help in finding a nuclear density device that was stolen out of the back of a pickup. Police say the device that uses gamma radiation to check the density of a foundation before a structure is built was stolen Tuesday from the Dallas suburb.Police say the small gamma source in the device is enclosed in a solid lead box to shield any radiation. They say that box is ``virtually indestructible,'' but even if it was compromised, the radiation area would only cover 10 feet to 20 feet from the gamma source. The bright yellow device is stored in a bright yellow container with a radiation sticker on it.

  • Tepco got it wrong....again
We have been conducting gas analysis by using PCV gas management system
since October 28, 2011. However, it was found that some measurement
results collected on October 28, November 1, 2 and 14 were evaluated
about 10% lower in terms of the concentration of radioactive materials
due to computation process error. The error is limited to figures only,
and does not affect the criterion of criticality resumption nor evaluation
    results. www.tepco.co.jp

  • @lillymunster , I vainly hope that the folks who stole this machine know how to handle it. Did I already tell the anecdote of one of the rare patients at the radiation accident clinic where I worked as a student for a while? The guy was cleaning one such machine, wanted to do a thorough job, took the source out of its lead container while he was cleaning the inside, and stuck it in the back pocket of his jeans. He lost half of his buttock. Good intentions. Not so smart, :(
