@MaryW The veterinary association had an international meeting soon after the disaster to consult with other veterinarians that deal with radiation and animals to figure out what to do. It depends on what they get into vs. what their outcome will be. Dogs are really prone to cancer but have short life spans so they are a gamble unless they got heavy doses internally. Cows are unusable as farm animals. There were farmers that wanted to donate their cows for a research facility. I think they figured it was better than leaving them to starve.

@MaryW On there are LOTS of veterinarians in the US and likely other countries with experience with radiation and animals, sadly due to so much animal testing over the decades. The US was still experimenting on dogs in the 1980's.

With cats, dogs etc. they have been decontaminating them really well, then putting a dosimeter on them to see if they are emitting anything still. That is what they did for the dogs that were at the plant.

more rice banned in Fukushima. This is not a repeat from yesterday, or the day before, or last week.....

@MaryW veterinarians in the region and other parts of Japan have been doing lots to try to help out. Doing work at cost for the shelters that are housing all the animals. Pressuring the govt to let people go get the animals. A bunch went and helped euthanize livestock that couldn't get moved out.

@MaryW it is already happening in the zone. It is so heartbreaking to see the rescuers find litters of puppies. They have hauled out 3 that I know of that they took pictures of. So far they all looked healthy. finding those that might have died at birth or been extremely ill isn't very likely. They found litters by tracking dogs back to where they were hiding. They found a couple of dogs and a litter of puppies in a convenience store.

NEWS ADVISORY: Up to 37 milisieverts of radiation exposure seen among some Fukushima residents (10:23) english.kyodonews.jp by Edano 12/9/2011 1:28:45 AM

@MaryW Lots of starvation. Hard to tell if they died of disease or radiation exposure unless they tested them. There are some videos and images various groups took in the zone. I have a pretty solid stomach and saw lots of gross and sad things when I worked in animal health but some of those videos were just too much to watch.
by lillymunster 12/9/2011 1:29:56 AM

@Edano was this just news flash, no article yet?
by lillymunster 12/9/2011 1:30:23 AM

@lillymunster only flash
by Edano 12/9/2011 1:31:25 AM

@Edano I am assuming that may be internal. :-(
by lillymunster 12/9/2011 1:33:17 AM

ah, external, so this is complete BS once again. they just "estimated" 37 mSv....
by Edano 12/9/2011 1:41:27 AM

@MaryW they don't have any exposure data, because noone had a dosimeter. so they guess it now based on "questionnaires" - and of course much too low and completely useless.
by Edano 12/9/2011 1:55:08 AM

i can tell you how this worked: mr x was 3 hours outside on march 14, but he had a rainjacket and a hat, so lets guess 5 mSv. the rest of the day he was at home, the windows were closed and therefore added 0 msv. and so on. complete guessing, worthless.
by Edano 12/9/2011 1:59:30 AM

@MaryW Just image if they put all this money into relocating people instead....
by lillymunster 12/9/2011 2:08:03 AM

@MaryW yes, but they need fast and cheap propaganda, not thorough investigation.

TEPCO to defer decision on dumping water into the sea. (until March when they are out of room and then they will dump it anyway)

They should be forced to get international permission to dump any more.
