  • We need to get some info from a veterinarian radiation specialist. Is that even a specialty?
    by MaryW 12/9/2011 1:17:41 AM

  • Ukraine veterinarians may be the only ones with experience in this field. I'll have to do some research on this.
    by MaryW 12/9/2011 1:19:01 AM

  • @MaryW The veterinary association had an international meeting soon after the disaster to consult with other veterinarians that deal with radiation and animals to figure out what to do. It depends on what they get into vs. what their outcome will be. Dogs are really prone to cancer but have short life spans so they are a gamble unless they got heavy doses internally. Cows are unusable as farm animals. There were farmers that wanted to donate their cows for a research facility. I think they figured it was better than leaving them to starve.
    by lillymunster 12/9/2011 1:20:09 AM

  • @MaryW On there are LOTS of veterinarians in the US and likely other countries with experience with radiation and animals, sadly due to so much animal testing over the decades. The US was still experimenting on dogs in the 1980's.
    by lillymunster 12/9/2011 1:20:55 AM

  • With cats, dogs etc. they have been decontaminating them really well, then putting a dosimeter on them to see if they are emitting anything still. That is what they did for the dogs that were at the plant.
    by lillymunster 12/9/2011 1:22:50 AM

  • @lillymunster Yes, I now vaguely remember articles on the veterinarians concerns within the hot zone area.

  • The worst will be when these radiated animals reproduce and what defects their offsprings may have.
    by MaryW 12/9/2011 1:25:52 AM

  • @MaryW veterinarians in the region and other parts of Japan have been doing lots to try to help out. Doing work at cost for the shelters that are housing all the animals. Pressuring the govt to let people go get the animals. A bunch went and helped euthanize livestock that couldn't get moved out.
    by lillymunster 12/9/2011 1:26:45 AM

  • @lillymunster I seen some nasty pictures of animals that have died from hunger or from radiation exposures.
    by MaryW 12/9/2011 1:28:28 AM

  • @MaryW it is already happening in the zone. It is so heartbreaking to see the rescuers find litters of puppies. They have hauled out 3 that I know of that they took pictures of. So far they all looked healthy. finding those that might have died at birth or been extremely ill isn't very likely. They found litters by tracking dogs back to where they were hiding. They found a couple of dogs and a litter of puppies in a convenience store.

  • NEWS ADVISORY: Up to 37 milisieverts of radiation exposure seen among some Fukushima residents (10:23) english.kyodonews.jp
    by Edano 12/9/2011 1:28:45 AM

  • @MaryW Lots of starvation. Hard to tell if they died of disease or radiation exposure unless they tested them. There are some videos and images various groups took in the zone. I have a pretty solid stomach and saw lots of gross and sad things when I worked in animal health but some of those videos were just too much to watch.
    by lillymunster 12/9/2011 1:29:56 AM

  • @Edano was this just news flash, no article yet?
    by lillymunster 12/9/2011 1:30:23 AM

    by Edano 12/9/2011 1:31:25 AM

  • @Edano I am assuming that may be internal. :-(

  • Fukushima Residents had max 37 milisieverts external exposure in 4 months. ex-skf.blogspot.com
    by MaryW 12/9/2011 1:37:03 AM

  • And then they think the rice crop in Fukushima is ok for human consumption. Letting the farmers into this area to work the contaminated field to harvest their crop.
    by MaryW 12/9/2011 1:40:43 AM

  • ah, external, so this is complete BS once again. they just "estimated" 37 mSv....
    by Edano 12/9/2011 1:41:27 AM

  • @Edano They will have to test thousands of people. At their rate a comprehensive study without estimates may not come out in our life-time.

    by MaryW 12/9/2011 1:54:13 AM

  • @MaryW they don't have any exposure data, because noone had a dosimeter. so they guess it now based on "questionnaires" - and of course much too low and completely useless.
    by Edano 12/9/2011 1:55:08 AM

  • i can tell you how this worked: mr x was 3 hours outside on march 14, but he had a rainjacket and a hat, so lets guess 5 mSv. the rest of the day he was at home, the windows were closed and therefore added 0 msv. and so on. complete guessing, worthless.
    by Edano 12/9/2011 1:59:30 AM

  • @Edano What gets me is all the stupid, useless efforts, waste of time and money coming out of Japan. All this should be put into doing meaningful, time-sensitive ventures.
    by MaryW 12/9/2011 2:07:18 AM

  • @MaryW Just image if they put all this money into relocating people instead....
    by lillymunster 12/9/2011 2:08:03 AM

  • @MaryW yes, but they need fast and cheap propaganda, not thorough investigation.
    by Edano 12/9/2011 2:09:16 AM

  • @lillymunster That should be their priority, up there with containing the radiation at the plant.
    by MaryW 12/9/2011 2:09:33 AM

  • @Edano Their propaganda is only to satisfy their needs. When it reality it is revealing their incompetencies.
    by MaryW 12/9/2011 2:12:18 AM

  • I am listen to the Gundersen's video. Why is no one picking up this radiated debris in the ocean soon to land in Hawaii and the west coast. All they are doing is watching is float closer and closer to contaminate its final resting place. Who is responsible for cleaning up these contaminated shores. And where are they going to store this debris?
