  • can anybody verify this French stress test that concludes the pipes are too old to survive even a wimpy earthquake and 1.5m of concrete isn't enough to keep a meltdown from eating into the ground ....A few weeks ago the results of the French stress test were published.

The last catastrophical earthquake in the area of the two Fessenheim reactors was only 450 years ago and it was at estimated 6.2 magnitude. Back in the 1970s, the Fessenheim reactors were thus designed to withstand a 6.7 magnitude quake.

However, the official stress test published by the reputable IRSN and the ASN admitted that the tubing in this 35-year-old reactors would no longer withstand such an earthquake because of aging and wear, possibly leading to a loss of cooling accident as well as compromising the containment.

Furthermore, concern was expressed that the 1.5 meters of concrete insulation between the reactors and the ground soil might be insufficient reserve in case of meltdown.

The Fessenheim NPP is located at the Rhine, bordering to Germany. The main wind direction is towards Germany, the Rhine leaves French territory a few kilometers downwards.

    Isn't this convenient?
In case of accident, France would get only negligible damage. Most of the pollution would hit Germany and the Netherlands (which depend to a major part on the Rhine for their drinking water supply).

Let's look towards, what will happen?
Will the Fessenheim reactors be decommissioned or will they get the desired lifetime extension?

(I sadly suppose the responsible people will not learn from Fukushima.) ex-skf.blogspot.com

The plans for security update was announced on Friday afternoon at the meeting of the Monitoring Commission in Colmar. Volunteering does not happen: Only the French Nuclear ASN announced their lifetime extension for one block in the summer, subject to 40 conditions, including the strengthening of the base plate. Would find it already held drilling, said the director of the NPP, Thierry Rosso.

The current base beneath the nuclear power plant, according to experts, too thin to withstand an earthquake. This problem could be solved technically by the existing board would be poured from concrete block I, in order to reinforce Sun But this is not the only point in the comprehensive improvement program that EdF announced yesterday by the Commission. Trigger the requirements of the ASN, but also the EU stress tests, which run until the end of the French nuclear power plants. Particulate filter and electrical systems are now better protected, and earthquake protection Isolierklappen be strengthened. Furthermore the EdF examines possibilities for an alternative emergency cooling of the reactor, and they want the consequences of dam failure for this high-lying Grand Canal d'Alsace to, for example after an earthquake, check again.

  • Long and tough road ahead for work to decommission Fukushima nuclear reactors: A single fuel rod contains about 170 kilograms of uranium, and a simple calculation suggests that about 254 tons of uranium in the reactors alone must be recovered. The distance between the upper lid and the bottom of a containment vessel is up to 35 meters. From that far away, the work has to be done to chop off and recover melted and crumbled fuel by using remote controlled cranes. Furthermore, the melted fuel is mixed with metal from fuel pellets and reactor parts. mdn.mainichi.jp

  • The Japanese food company working with walmart will be selling typical American-Asian stuff like orange chicken. :-( It sounds like it will at least be manufactured over in the US. BTW, I did some looking at a company called Asian Foods, they are the largest commercial food supplier for Asian restaurant in the US. It appears that large amounts of what they source is out of the US. Some more unique things it is still hard to say. But a good amount of what is supplied to Japanese restaurants in the US isn't direct import. I am still reluctant on fish unless I know exactly where it is from.

Any opinions if this PM is any better or worse than Kan? I'm thinking of working on a book, and I actually like Kan's statement "what the hell is going on", he's a tech graduate with some leftist leanings, but I don't think he did such a bad job despite what looks like the nation pinning the blame on him to fall on his sword and resign.

  • New Video of Scientist Kaltofen Presenting to American Public Health Association A professional video of Marco Kaltofen's presentation to the American Public Health Association was recently made available to Fairewinds. Kaltofen states that hot particles are contaminating portions of northern Japan. He also states that auto air filters from Fukushima, that he tested in his Massachusetts laboratory, are so radioactive that they have to be disposed of in a buried radioactive waste disposal site in the US. Additionally, he expresses concerns for the mechanics who work on cars in Fukushima Prefecture. fairewinds.com
