Sea Shepherd sets sailA ship belonging to anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd has left a port in Australia in a bid to disrupt Japanese whalers in the Antarctic.
The ship, Bob Barker, left Hobart in the southern Australian state of Tasmania early Friday. Two other vessels belonging to the group are expected to depart Western Australia from Friday through Saturday.
Sea Shepherd has been stepping up its activities against Japan's annual whaling mission in recent years.
Harassment by the group forced whalers to cut short their mission last year for the first time since the start of the research whaling program in 1987.
The organizer of the Japanese mission, the Institute of Cetacean Research, asked a US court earlier this month to order Sea Shepherd to halt its activities.
The group's Canadian founder, Paul Watson, has been placed on the wanted list of the International Criminal Police Organization for planning the group's attempted sabotage. Japanese prosecutors accused Watson of ordering a New Zealand activist to board the Japanese whaling vessel Shonan Maru 2 in February last year.
Contacted by NHK by telephone, Watson dismissed the accusation as groundless and said he is not worried by it.
Japanese Coast Guard officials will sail with this year's whaling fleet with the aim of protecting crewmembers.

bill gates is really a narrow mind when he thinks his money best serves for inventing new ways to pollute the earth. this came to my mind when i studied all the actions sea shepherd takes to conserve the maritime world. they could really need his money, but he puts it where he expects the most profit.

@Lurking It is a really silly comment for a government official. It is based on faith not facts.

Non-categorized event in Slovakia on Thursday, 15 December, 2011 at 16:52 (04:52 PM) UTC.Description
Slovak police say they have arrested seven men suspected of planning to sell an unspecified radioactive material. Police chief Jaroslav Spisiak says the material originated in a former Soviet country, has an estimated value of euro500,000 ($649,650) and has not been yet transported to Slovakia. Six suspects are Slovak nationals and one is a Czech. Slovak and Czech police, who have followed the group since 2009, cooperated in the arrests. Spisiak declined Thursday to give more details, including what the material was and who may want to buy it. The suspects face up to 10 years in prison if convicted of illegal trade with radioactive materials. In 2007, police arrested three people who tried to sell uranium for $1 million in the last similar case in Slovakia.

@Lurking If they are basing their actions heavily on the computer model that they likely fudged to get a desired result, yes. They are flying blind. I really hope they get cameras in there and make some factual analysis.

Extreme Weather in France on Friday, 16 December, 2011 at 11:13 (11:13 AM) UTC.Updated: Friday, 16 December, 2011 at 16:45 UTC
Description
French nuclear operator EDF said on Friday it had ended a precautionary emergency plan set out at its Blayais nuclear power plant near Bordeaux as storm winds and torrential rain that started to subside. "The favourable evolution of weather conditions, and in particular weakening winds, have allowed us to lift at 1300 (1200 GMT) our internal vigilance plan at the Blayais nuclear plant," EDF said in statement. "The four reactors have continued to operate safely. The storm has had no impact on the facilities," EDF said. Earlier in the day, EDF had said the plan had been put in place at 0630 GMT to prevent flooding of the plant, located on the banks of the Gironde estuary, by securing access to certain doors and putting mobile water-pumping stations in place around the facilities, she said. Nuclear power operators around the world have stepped up safety measures after an earthquake and tsunami hit Japan's Fukushima Daiichi power plant in March, causing the worst nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl accident 25 years ago.

@Lurking I don't think the computer models, at least the ones they are showing to the public are accurate. There were enough scientists that said there are too many unknown factors to create a concrete scenario. They can get ideas what might have happened but they don't have enough data to pin point like they did.
