@all Elaine and I put together some info on ICRP the organization a while back. I have the file if anyone wants it for research. It showed what groups fund the ICRP and how much. The get LOTS of money from the NRC and other nuke agencies around the world

@Ian the radiation rising from 0.09 µSv/h to 2.6 µSv/hr when the castor passes by, is indeed frightening. i wonder why it is not possible to block it off completely. is it that they can't or they don't want ?
by Edano 12/31/2011 2:41:41 AM

@MaryW no. it is gamma radiation. not a leak.

#Fukushima I Nuke Plant Reactor 3 Spent Fuel Pool Cooling Will Stop Till Jan 4, 2012
Holiday break for Reactor 3's Spent Fuel Pool. (Or rather, for workers who have to tend to the cooling system.)

the gamma rays just pass the cask walls. they are not thick enough.
by Edano 12/31/2011 2:46:18 AM

@Ian a cut and paste of the title in Japanese from the original blog post into google put up a bunch of links. Video seems to spew lots of results with that title also

but probably they are constructed that they just meet the safety requirements, and no inch thicker.

Guardian article from back in April talks about ICRP and also Chernobyl in relation to ICRP standards

@Peter i really hope it's not a leak with radioactive particles. i think it is just gamma rays.
by Edano 12/31/2011 2:50:55 AM

@MaryW as long as they are moving, the damage to individuals is low. but in case of an accident it is more critical.
by Edano 12/31/2011 2:52:59 AM

yea there may be weak spots.
by Edano 12/31/2011 2:54:22 AM

when my xray room was constructed i insisted on lead walls and i even made the workers cover the screw heads with lead. and the keyhole had to be covered as well. :) they were annoyed.
by Edano 12/31/2011 2:56:19 AM

IIRC casks used in the US that they plop outside in their parking lot emit a constant level of radiation along with heat. I think the permissible level was cited in some of the North Anna reporting
by lillymunster 12/31/2011 2:56:44 AM

but i always get a compliment from the xray inspector. :)
by Edano 12/31/2011 2:58:37 AM

@Peter they are checked regularly, as far as i have read.

Cask at Fuku (pre-quake) and the meter sitting outside it for monitoring
by lillymunster 12/31/2011 3:00:53 AM

3 mSv/hr ! that is really far from ideal. or do i miss a decimal point ? 0.003 ?
by Edano 12/31/2011 3:03:28 AM

@Peter It was in my stash. I thought I had something like that. I really need a photo database or something.
by lillymunster 12/31/2011 3:06:29 AM

@Peter yes, but much farer away.
