    Powerful earthquake hits Tokyo

A strong earthquake struck Tokyo and surrounding areas on Sunday afternoon.

The earthquake occurred at around 2:28 PM local time.

Japan's Meteorological Agency says the earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 7.0, with its focus 370 kilometers deep near Torishima Island in the Pacific Ocean.

The agency says the quake registered 4 on the Japanese scale of zero to 7 in 7 prefectures.

The jolt was felt in a wide area, from the northern main island of Hokkaido to the western part of Honshu Island.

The coastal cities of Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, and Iwanuma, Miyagi Prefecture, were among those that felt the strongest tremor.

Tokyo Electric Power Company said no new developments are reported at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and nearby Daini nuclear plant.

The agency hasn't issued a tsunami alert.

  • Strong quake jolts eastern, northeastern Japan

    TOKYO, Jan. 1, Kyodo

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 jolted a wide area in eastern and northeastern Japan on Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, issuing no tsunami warning.

The 2:28 p.m. quake measured an intensity of 4 on the Japanese scale of 7 in many locations in downtown Tokyo, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Chiba, Saitama and Kanagawa prefectures, the agency said.

There was no immediate information about abnormalities at nuclear reactors including those of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Fukushima Prefecture. english.kyodonews.jp

  • @Edano One of the workers was tweeting about blow out panels last night. I think it is the same one EX-SKF refers to. So why did 2's panel work if all were welded. It also answers our question about the other units having panels. But if the blow out panels worked how would that impact venting?
    by lillymunster 1/1/2012 3:04:14 PM

  • @lillymunster , the way I understood it, Unit 2's panel was the only one that was not welded to the braces.
    by Peter 1/1/2012 3:07:23 PM

  • @Peter wonder why it was overlooked?
    by lillymunster 1/1/2012 3:10:23 PM

  • @all. Mary found an oddity yesterday. There was an article that was ambiguous about some dates on the iodine leak in Europe. I pulled EUDEP readings from the same Budapest station I was using but for December and the readings are in the same range as during the leak? Anyone have an idea how this could be if the leak was solved by shutting off the reactor? There are 2 days after Nov 20th that are "holes" in the station's reading. They shut the reactor off Nov 17. Then it goes back to the same constant and peaks as during the leak period.

  • As to the panels, I don't understand the rational behind this welding idea at all. If you wished to have them blown out in an explosion, you would not attach them to anything that could prevent that or complicate the excision. If you attach them to bracing, the damage to the building is only going to be greater.

  • @Peter Was yesterday's quake a 4 on shindo?
    by lillymunster 1/1/2012 3:35:41 PM

  • @lillymunster , I first thought the operators had done that, it looked so clean. I wonder whether tepco felt they needed to preserve this option particularly in this reactor. Perhaps hydrogen had built up on the refueling floor before, ;)
    by Peter 1/1/2012 3:36:53 PM

  • @lillymunster , edano's post say Sunday, Jan 1, and the maps show shindo 4 as magnitude.
