  • Sadly it is those with the fewest resources who are the first neglected and pay the heaviest price. Any picture of the children of Chernobyl would send parents running, and did. Those left behind seem to be the ones who could not, for economic reasons and lack of real information, flee.

  • @Edano IIRC those old pipe type chimneys attached to the corner of the reactor buildings were some sort of old air venting system. I can't remember the details though. Maybe Peter can shed some light, he researched this system set in depth.

  • @toad I find language and financial transaction issues hard for those outside Japan. It is hard to locate and communicate with groups trying to help people in Japan. Sending donations to those groups is hard due to language and no common money sending system.

  • @All Happy New Year! Just dropped in to post this article because I thought it interesting. Prairie Island nuclear plant will be up and running in the area at least until 2034 after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission renewed the facility’s licenses in June.

After a three-year review, the NRC renewed the nuclear plant's unit licenses, extending them 20 years each to 2033 and 2034.

Local government entities were keeping an eye on the renewal process. As city Finance Director Marshall Hallock and others have said, the upgrades at the nuclear plant would increase the tax base in the area, giving the city and county a chance to capture more revenue without necessarily passing on the cost to residents and other taxpayers.

But a plan to increase capacity at the plant is uncertain in light of rising costs and delays. This fall, Xcel Energy announced it was pausing to re-evaluate the proposed capacity expansion.

  • Found it!
    From Peter's blog:

In normal operation, the tall stack towers between Units 1 and 2 and Units 3 and 4 at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station are designed to vent filtered, decontaminated off-gases from the main steam turbine [Row TH (1973) Radioactive Waste Systems and Radioactive Effluents]. By contrast, separate shorter stacks attached to the reactor building walls provide venting for uncontaminated effluents from the buildings. If increased levels of radioactivity are detected, the effluents will be routed through the Standby Gas Treatment System to the stack. This system also filters gases from the primary containment. Compared to the towers, the stacks for uncontaminated effluents are short, ending just above the roofline. One is still visibly intact on the Northwest corner of unit 2: brainmindinst.blogspot.com
    by lillymunster 1/1/2012 5:19:30 PM

  • Did workers drill holes in the roof of unit 2 or just 5-6?
    by lillymunster 1/1/2012 5:29:57 PM

  • Yup, lilly, I am back for a little while. That is what I could figure out at the time. The sentiment in April was that the hydrogen stemmed from the reactors and that when they proceeded with the hardened venting the hydrogen gathered in the wetwell filled the building through backflow via a malfunctioning valve that did not close. Holes were only drilled in the roofs of units 5 and 6.
    by Peter 1/1/2012 5:34:45 PM

  • How the IC works is still enigmatic to me. It must have its own stack, unique to the unit 1 building, and I have not found that one yet. Workers reported that the IC was working at some point because they could see and here steam exit from this outlet. In addition, as the water in the outer shell boils away to condense the reactor steam in the tubes, it must be replenished. It was never clear to me, how this is supposed to work without power.

  • I wrote up what we have so far on the blow out panels and the quake. If anyone has something I missed or did not explain correctly let me know.
    www.simplyinfo.org
    by lillymunster 1/1/2012 5:45:37 PM

  • My earlier comments pertain to Unit 1. At Unit 3, the scenario seems to have been that hardened venting was unsuccessful in relieving the pressure in the primary containment and that the pressure built-up forced hydrogen through the cap gasket into the building, eventually causing the massive explosion.
    by Peter 1/1/2012 5:52:06 PM

  • It seemed to me, though, that the first explosion at Unit 3 occurred in the containment itself. However, all picture I saw indicate that the concrete slabs are still on the reactor well.
    by Peter 1/1/2012 5:56:14 PM

  • @Peter I think that is still all correct. The containment cap leaked. There is a gap and weak spot where the fuel gate is. I think all the leaking and blast came from that location and explains the damage to 3's SFP. The concrete slab is still on and looks ok at least on the opposite side. Once they finally clear the deck of 3 it would be interesting to see if the other side of the concrete cap shows damage of some kind.
    by lillymunster 1/1/2012 6:07:53 PM

  • Reading this workers blog, he mentions blow out panels in the turbine buildings. They opened one on unit 1 turbine building. So apparently those buildings did not have the blow out panels welded shut? members.jcom.home.ne.jp

  • This hasn't made English language news yet. People in the government knew that the cost to just store fuel was considerably less than reprocessing would cost but hid this information.

Biennial cycle: energy agency chief directed 2004 direct disposal cost concealment

In April 2004 he was director of the Agency for Nuclear Energy Policy Secretariat, Ministry of Economy, the Deputy Director of the Ministry Masaya Yasui, simply discard the spent nuclear fuel without reprocessing "direct disposal" costs of concealment of assets ( concealment) were able to tell the people, and notes found in the testimony of participants. Reprocessing, but national policy, it becomes obvious, and found to be less expensive than direct disposal reprocessing seems accelerating the push for policy changes.

Two months later, the program has been compiled to pay people about 19 trillion yen in operating costs incurred in Rokkasho-mura reprocessing plant in Aomori Prefecture, has emerged an important decision that led to suspect hidden data.

Reprocessing around since 2002, has been found that was seeking to withdraw from the reprocessing business leaders of TEPCO and METI. Mr. Yasui has been involved in policy for many years in nuclear propulsion officer, Department of Nuclear Engineering, Kyoto University graduate. So-called "bubbles" Nuclear's motion to withdraw the sealed form.

Assets MITI (then) commissioned business, Foundation Center "Nuclear Environmental Improvement" (Center for Nuclear Environmental Management Funding and present) in 1998, to 6 trillion yen, 4.2 trillion cost of direct disposal was calculated. If reprocessing direct disposal (approximately 19 trillion yen), which means living on less than one-quarter of 1-3.

Memo obtained by the Mainichi Shimbun, April 20, created in 2004, ministry officials. "Subordinates (note real name) yesterday, to Mr. Yasui (the existence of assets) were told," so as not to touch the eyes of the world "down with the assertion" that is stated.

People are told, from easy to "put me out of sight at the estimated" and recognized that it was directed, "was also a pile of other documents discreetly, on the floor behind the chair put "and testified.

Advisory body to the three-phase system "Electric Utilities Subcommittee on Energy and Natural Resources Committee," as in May, was seeking out opinions from members costing more direct disposal. Nuclear Policy Division communicate the existence of these assets was the division in charge of the subcommittee members, the same subcommittee in June, about 19 trillion yen for the industry, the proposed introduction of a new surcharge on electricity prices for households summarizes. This is the "domestic reprocessing" nuclear power has led to the current policy outline to stick with.

Yasui said in an interview "(it has been estimated that people have not) but could have been (directed concealed) does not remember," he said. Biennial cycle [crew]

The first nuclear power plant in Fukushima No. 4 or plumbing leak in the cooling pool

Day TEPCO announced that might leak from the piping is going on with the circulation of the spent fuel pool cooling of Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant 4. Changes in the pool water level has continued without cooling.

Accumulated water from a pool full of "skimmer surge tank," the water level dropped by about 8 cm per hour during the afternoon 2-5. Mainly in natural water evaporation was down in the past, was about 1.7 centimeters per hour.
    --Jan 02.2011
Water, heat and impurities are removed from the tank through a pipe back to the pool again. TEPCO has been investigating the cause of the leak happened and look at places such as piping connections.

  • Beginning of the 13 th month of 2011. Just after 311 ,I didn’t know what to do. The only thing I knew was I can no longer trust the gov and NHK.
A friend of mine told me there is a group “Tokyo Radioactive Now” on facebook. On that group ,I saw the thing called geiger counter for the first time in my life. ... “Don’t we need to evacuate ?” The admin removed my post and sent me the message like this ,”Don’t spread the panic.” but officially he said ,”I only post INFORMATION. It’s up to you how to judge the situation from that.” ... + There can not be information without purpose.

+ He just did not want everyone around him to leave. ...
If I die ,it’s him to blame partially... Since then ,all the information I give is to mean “Evacuate Japan”.
It’s going to be 10 months since 311 soon. but still nothing has been improved.
It’s not the time to celebrate 2012. It will be severer this year. and it will be even severer in 2013.

I often receive messages to ask what to do ?
    My answer is always ,Evacuate.

It’s only you to save yourself.

I don’t think we can except any help from human right associations or governments ,especially america.
More or less ,all of them are the stakeholders of nuclear industrial companies. Why would they pay money to damage their own business ? ... I have been fighting to arm you with all the knowledge.

There seem to be 2 categories of the readers.
    1. People who want to evacuate Japan but can’t because of their husband / boy friend ,or too much furniture and property to sell.

    2. People who are concerned about the situation from outside of Japan.

Rationally thinking ,it is clear that all the nuclides such as plutonium ,uranium ,americium ,strontium ,and sure cesium and iodine are already in Tokyo or south Japan.
There is no safe place even in west Japan or south Japan because they secretly distribute radioactive debris ,and contaminated food is distributed everywhere.
If everyone evacuates Tokyo and Japan as I say ,the world economy will start getting collapsed from Japan. ... Everyday ,new fact comes up.
Low dose symptom shows up sooner than we ever thought, cancer is only a tiny part of all the potential problems. ... Even in Chernobyl ,it took 3~5 years for people to have health problems. but in Japan, because Fukushima used MOX ,people are starting to have problems way sooner. .... .... The potential crisis is

    1) Spent fuel pool of reactor4. 2) Hydrovolcanic explosion at reactor 1~3. Also ,as long as you stay in Japan ,you must be aware of these risks, wherever you are in Japan.

    1) Radioactive debris. 2) Contaminated food and water. 3) Dust. Pollen start flying from December to May. The peak is from February to March. The sooner the better.

    At the end, ... fukushima-diary.com

  • another report on unit 4 sfp leaking www.tv-asahi.co.jp

Tank adjacent to the spent fuel pool in Unit 4, Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has been confirmed that degraded at a rate nearly five times the normal level. TEPCO is in a hurry to identify the cause. Around 5:30 pm on October 1, adjacent to the spent fuel pool at Unit 4 "gap surge tank," found that the water level drops relatively quickly. Normally it is reduced by evaporation, etc., that was five times as fast. So far, water leaks around the reactor building cooling systems and have been found circulating in the pool. If cooling continues the pool itself, and changes in water temperature is in that space. TEPCO will conduct joint investigations, such as pipes, in a hurry to identify the cause of the reservoir drawdown.

  • @Ian I have checked the TEPCO press release as as soon as I seen the breaking news. And Nada. I did hear early this morning, approx. 2AM US CST, a tweet the stated a leak at the plant...no link...and I could not find any info. by Edano 1/1/2012 9:45:06 PM

    by lillymunster 1/1/2012 9:45:58 PM

  • @Edano A crack is possible and that is part of the structural worry from the start. IIRC the cooling circulation had to be fudged on unit 4 because the normal circulation system was so damaged. So unless the new temporary water system is somehow causing water to drain out of the skimmer they have a pool leak somewhere.
    by lillymunster 1/1/2012 9:47:37 PM

  • the quake was 14:28. not so dramatic, it seems.
