  • @Edano This kind of treachery has been used and abused, for a long time, for political and/or more obscure purposes, but Mr Assange's and Mr Strauss-Kahn's recent scandals are very alarming. Not only does this taint the alleged criminal's image (who is, in these cases, treated like a criminal without even being charged by a court which is a clear obstruction of justice) but also makes it a lot harder for courts to impartially judge other cases, crippling real victims' right for justice whenever it is the case that the allegation corresponds to fact.

  • a ps on the same subject from the same site: 'P.S. I just read a post by Ms. Emiko Numauchi as "Numayu" writing that there was nuclear fuel inside the Reactor Pressure Vessel of Reactor 4 and it had a meltdown, as she heard from a worker she trusts, and the English translation of the post by someone else.

If the fuel melted through the RPV and now on the floor of the Containment Vessel as she claims, I have no idea how the RPV/Reactor Well is able to retain water, as it clearly does, looking at the photographs. Of course she or anyone can claim they are fake photographs.

As for me, I want to find the facts as much as possible without resorting to calling everything fake. Even from TEPCO, the reporters on February 1 press conference were able to draw out more information than what TEPCO initially presented in the beginning of the press conference.' Sounds highly unlikely...but

  • @lillymunster 'WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2012
8.5 Tonnes of Water Leaked from Reactor Well/Spent Fuel Pool of Reactor 4 According to TEPCO
In the evening press conference on February 1, 2012 (with Matsumoto), TEPCO announced the result of their calculation: 8.5 tonnes of water from the Reactor Well/Spent Fuel Pool of Reactor 4 may have leaked (Jiji News, Japanese, 2/1/2012). Other than the information of the TEPCO's calculated number and the diameter of the pipe (9 millimeters), the details seem the same as I reported in my previous post.' ex-skf.blogspot.com I think he watches the news conferences & translates

  • @UKVal when I was trawling docs ages before the simply-info site was up and running to catalogue stuff I found docs relating to unit 4 being used to store fuel Maybe Lilly remembers
, as was the norm in those days I lost track of the doc but given the state of #4 I would say that there is a very good chance there was other fuel in there that was damaged would you say?
    by elainekirk 2/1/2012 8:27:15 PM

  • @elainekirk I remember something about a plan to store fuel possibly in the basement areas of the plant. It was one of those weird translations we couldn't get definitive details. It was something with storing nuclear fuel in the basement either casks or some other manner. With what we know now would it maybe have been something about the new fuel load being stored in the basement while they worked? It could have been a plan to store casks in the basement. That is about TEPCO's speed.

We might have a copy in the saved TEPCO documents. Elaine fed me much of her early finds and I saved them and put them in an online folder then made a list of the documents.

  • so far I've only found this from a Reuters report in March but it's hardly a smoking gun: 'Fukushima Daiichi had over time been pushing the limits of the plant's capacity to store uranium fuel on site, according to a Tokyo Electric presentation from November 2010 and now circulating among safety experts and environmental critics.
The Tokyo Electric researcher who prepared that presentation on the safety of spent fuel at the complex, Yumiko Kumano, could not be reached for comment. A spokesman for TEPCO declined to comment on its fuel storage decisions and whether they contributed to the crisis.
"Our focus now is on responding to the situation at Fukushima," he said.
The TEPCO presentation noted that the utility had taken steps to increase storage capacity for spent fuel at the plant complex beyond its original design. Those included "re-racking" the pools in the reactor buildings to increase their capacity and then building a separate large, pool outside and a separate hub of metal casks that do not need to rely on electricity.
But the only significant open space left for storage remained inside the reactor buildings, according to the document. TEPCO had the capacity to more than double the number of fuel assemblies stored in the reactors from 3,998 at the time of the quake to 8,310 assemblies.

    by elainekirk 2/1/2012 9:09:53 PM

  • IIRC the cask building is full. Not sure about capacity of the common pool and if that is full too.

Elaine are those sandbags? Can only blame the plant staff so far it is like solving a nuclear crisis with whatever junk you can find in the garage. TEPCO is too cheap to give them anything to work with.

Now that I think about it some of the stuff in my garage just might work better! I have an old file cabinet about the size of that trench that would block it nicely. A little wet environment patch cement and ta-da!
    by lillymunster 2/1/2012 9:10:29 PM

  • this might be more useful - it's from a TEPCO doc: 'Start of regular inspection Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Unit 4 November 29, 2010, t & lists the work they plan to do at 4 . Note this extract '(13) in order to increase storage capacity of spent fuel dry storage of spent fuel containers and installation work, you the four additional dry storage containers.'

  • On a slight tangent there's also this from the same doc which is complete gobbledy **** to me but Dean or someone will know '9 or more * Change Fuel concentration 1 × gadolinia 9 (B type)
Gadolinium (Gd) oxide compounds gadolinia (Gd2O3) concentration of
Uranium fuel currently being used (concentration gadolinia: about 3.0 to about 5.0wt%) have higher fuel (gadolinia concentration: about 5.0 to about 7.0wt%).
Gadolinia high neutron absorption capacity, but using a fuel containing uranium Gadolinia traditionally used by the high concentration of uranium Gadolinia, the degree of combustion reaction in the reactor plant operation has the effect easier to control than the control.

  • forgive me if this is old news but on looking thru the docs I have I came across this: 'Regarding the radioactive noble gas Xenon‐133, the results indicate an emission of 16700 Peta‐
Becquerel (1 Becquerel is one radioactive decay per second, 1 Peta‐Becquerel equals 1015 Bq). This isthe largest civilian noble gas release in history, exceeding the Chernobyl noble gas release by a factor of 2.5. There is strong evidence that emissions started already on 11 March 2011 at 6:00 UTC, which is immediately after the big earthquake' from a doc entitled '.Reactor accident Fukushima – New international study on emissions of radioactive substances into the atmosphere' published by ZAMG and BOKU 'The publication containing the complete study, which is still under scientific peer review and thus
subject to either acceptance or rejection, is available from the following web page:

  • If a gas cylindar exploded on a floor where fuel rods were 'temporarily' stored then the shock wave would have fractured the fuel rods?
    by elainekirk 2/1/2012 11:11:15 PM

  • @elainekirk not sure.. in terms of spent fuel those casks are supposed to be very strong. What we don't know is what else was there. Came across a presentation with a diagram of the possible route of gas from #3 to #4 that may have led to the explosion but I don't know how to post it.
