  • @DonnerT, Wasn't this the reason why they conducted the experiment at Chernobyl that went so horrible wrong ? Afaik they were trying to see if the inertia of the turbines could keep the electrical generators running, until the diesels generators had time to kick in (SCRAM situation).

  • Yeah, 1.7t / m3 sounds the right order of magnitude.. think there must be some kind of logic behind when they use Bq/m3 vs. Bq/kg though.. or is Bq/kg mainly for food? So it's something like if you grow rice on 5000 Bq/m3 soil, you get 500 Bq/kg rice?

  • quoting any of these numbers is a bit meaningless without stating how deep the contamination goes anyhow.. I'd be far more worried if they had a lot of Bq/m3 going 50cm deep than if it was a 1mm layer at the top.

  • @sims I was just thinking about whether they were doing surface scrapings versus core samples. If you're going to quote it per cubic meter, are you doing it because the contamination goes deep, or are you doing it to try and hide the fact that the contamination at the surface is incredibly scary-high?

  • @WolfDK Don't know that much about Chernobyl. I've always wondered why they couldn't use the 7% to 10% thermal power remaining after SCRAM to run the turbines enough to maintain cooling circulation. Maybe the loop integrity was lost in the quake. The game was over when they lost generator backup. Since then it has been the show steer, the curious monkey and the corm cob. (30yrs not 39)

  • @Wold DK and anyone else interested....Chernobyl[Most Likely] went like this....They were conducting an expeiment to see if they lost offsite power and all BACK-UP's could they restart the reaction to produce power to run the cooling system, when they strated radio Xenon(Neutron Killer) built up and killed the reaction, the two operators paniced, the water drum operator pumped in more water to raise pressur to try and drive turbines, the rod operator lifted control rods at an alrming rate, beyond design specs, as the reactor kicked in again the pressure spiked and pushed all the water from the steam drum into the reactor causing a violent spike in reaction, SCRAM activated but in RBMK's it's like 15 second process, by the time the control rods started inserting the pressure was too high and they got stuck...too late lid blew and the rest is history! abstract by me from the documentry Seconds from Disaster(sorry for the big post!)
