  • @Tenzing In the second of the combo photo (9th photo) showing the tsunami impacting the Fukushima nuclear facility, did you notice the smoke rising above the building (Reactor #4 or the one nearest the camera?) on the left nearest the ocean? I wonder what caused that?

  • Hi all! I see your looking at those metal plates. I asked about them Fri night? I found them all over the place and they are huge, some the size of a semi. Some show heat days or weeks later, others don't get a view in the heat images.

  • @Nancy good moring, just coming in for a mint, still trying to get bills paid.....but what was deans finial thoughts on...... how hot the equipt/floor plates/ would be and if outside the building they would start to lose thier heat.... those to large "rusty" items that look like beams...did we ever come to a conclusion

  • @fitter, the last comments from various people was that something able to continue to push radiation like a rod could glow very hot for days or weeks. An object without fissible material less so. So we didn't have an official word.

  • can metal become radioactive?: answer, yes, with the right kind of contamination.

    Yes, if the "radioactive waves" are particulate radiation. Electromagnetic radiation (X-rays or gamma rays) are ionizing radiation, but they will not make something radioactive. Particulate radiation can do that; it can activate a substance. The nature of the resulting radioactive material will depend on what kind of particulate radiation a substance is exposed to, and what kind of substance is being exposed to the radiation.
    To cite an example, if we lower a "slug" of cobalt-59 into an operating nuclear reactor to bathe it in the neutron flux, the cobalt-59 will absorb a neutron and become cobalt-60. Cobalt-60 is a gamma ray emitter, and a strong one. We can withdraw our slug and put it in a "vault" or "casket" to shield us from the radiation, and then use this as a radiation source to perform X-ray analysis of welds in something like piping. We open a "door" on the package by remote control, of course. By having a portable source, we can avoid having to drag an X-ray machine somewhere and try to find a place to plug it in. We can also install a big source in an industrial setting to irradiate and sterilize something like band-aids. This first aid product is manufactured and packaged and then exposed to a big shot of radiation to "clean" it. And it works.

  • @sims per your comment about using different types of measurements all over the place. I see it different from like item to like item. Where you see water is various measurement expressions. They have to develop some international standards so people can easily understand. I don't know if they do this on purpose to throw people off or what.

  • Isotopes
    There are four naturally occurring isotopes of iron, iron-54, iron-56, iron-57, and iron-58. Isotopes are two or more forms of an element. Isotopes differ from each other according to their mass number. The number written to the right of the element's name is the mass number. The mass number represents the number of protons plus neutrons in the nucleus of an atom of the element. The number of protons determines the element, but the number of neutrons in the atom of any one element can vary. Each variation is an isotope.

    Six radioactive isotopes of iron are known also. A radioactive isotope is one that breaks apart and gives off some form of radiation. Radioactive isotopes are produced when very small particles are fired at atoms. These particles stick in the atoms and make them radioactive.

    Two radioactive isotopes of iron are used in medical and scientific research. They are iron-55 and iron-59. These isotopes are used primarily as tracers in studies on blood. A tracer is a radioactive isotope whose presence in a system can easily be detected. The isotope is injected into the system. Inside the system, the isotope gives off radiation. That radiation can be followed by detectors placed around the system. Iron-55 and iron-59 are used to study the way in which red blood cells develop in the body. These studies can be used to tell if a person's blood is healthy.

  • could those plates be more radioactive or hot if they were lining for the SFP. Would it be possible to eject pieces of that metal lining or is it constructed in a way making that impossible?

  • not sure, but i don't think the SPF is made out of anything that would rust. Maybe stainless steel?, But the roof beams could maybe have been doused with alpha by blast?

  • @Nancy sorry was over the other page, yes the fuel., ss has a low carbon steel content, will rust not that fast if it was normal enviroment.... i don't know how fuel (out of water) effects things chemicaly.... i would suspect any ss would be a high grade (low carbon).

  • @marie rich those panels are too big for roof beams, we have lots of examples of roof beams. The roof seems to be something other than steel panels. They are also extremely thick looking panels they didn't bend much. I assumed the SFP would be stainless steel also. Something of note the reactor rod assemblies get a very rusty color after being used for a while. Images of them doing maintenance like inserting rod assemblies in a SFP show they as that very rusty color. I don't know the exact cause but I am guessing it is some sort of oxidation from the reactions of the rods? But those big panels have the look of old unpainted steel plating that has been left out in the rain.

  • @uk val, hmm. They could be. Does anyone know if those are stainless or otherwise. I have dealt with lots of stainless in thin gauges like 16 ga. Never dealt with it in thick industrial types so I have no clue of the properties of it. We have scraps of old thin stainless in our garage shop that has been left out in a barn and spent decades in a garage. The stuff doesn't really rust.

  • @Marie, that was one of our most likely guesses friday night. What nobody could say for sure was the rusty appearance. Someone thought the outer paint burning off leaving the rust colored primer. The images are not clear enough but it didn't exactly look like primer but possibly with paint burned off it might have that look?

  • @Nancy those resemble "beams" and I have yet to figure out the main support structure for the roof "span" but on the evevation drawing all the equipment and pumps "were you see TOS" are beams... they are usually refered to as "support beams" in that they may be installed by the pipe fitter to HOLD his equipment vs the streel erection crew...

  • One interesting thing about the latest reactor 1 parameters (besides missing dw rad) is that the water level in the pressure vessel is up by 10 cm. With increased N2 pressure that's not expected, but probably, looking at other pressures, some gas was released or leaked to the drywell. Or somebody had a theory about producing ammonia, also consistent with this.

  • @tenzig, I did a review of the heat pages looking for odd signatures after this revelation about rods by 4 & 2. We have found odd hot blobs around the general area but no obvious rods. There were some hot blobs by #4 but they were mingled in debris and the area closer to 4 was covered with plywood panels. I assumed to keep the mud down due to water spraying.

  • @ES, hmm. those two leaned up against the tower maybe. There were a few plates that were in odd angles. I will have to go back and re-look at those images with that in mind. If there were exposed rods I doubt anyone is going to worry about nice placement. More drop and run like hell.
