  • But if there are a lot of small quakes to the West of the Honshu area now, that would indicate that the plate is also now moving West, and relieving the pressure on Honshu. That is a good thing as it would not be building up for a stress fracture quake, which would be large and dangerous.

  • @wtm. No, it's not about the earth losing material by centrifugal force flinging material off the spinning globe. There are perhaps 3 theories offering an explanation of how the earth could be gaining mass and thereby increasing its radius. I don't believe the capture-of-cosmic-dust theory. The one I find most plausible is that new particles of matter are continually created in the earth's core and throughout its mass, as a result of incoming cosmic and solar radiation. E=mc squared can operate in reverse: new mass particles created by incoming energy. The theory suggests that the earth is gaining mass and therefore both its radius and gravitation are becoming greater over time. Therefore, the theory holds that the earth cracks and splits in various places to accomodate the larger radius. The brittle crust fractures (earthquakes) along the seams. Tectonic plate subduction has never been proven and there is much evidence to suggest it is flat-out wrong. The theory is well worth a few minutes to study and digest the relevant evidence both pro and con, and form your own conclusion. I think plate tectonics has been soundly repudiated but fair-minded people will want to judge the evidence in an unbiased manner and form their own conclusion on it.

  • @Sky, both that theory and the spinning ball fit together. As the ball spins the crust moves outward, it could also be replaced by new material in the center, or the matter in the center is becoming less dense (or more molten) as it moves outward. The Earth is slowly getting bigger and hence more gravitational pull as it spins.

    Containment cap is about 10 metres or about 30 feet across
    Reactor vessel cap 5050mm = 5.5 metres - about 16.5 feet across

  • @Sky, If you notice that all the plate movement is mostly towards the West (with some exceptions) which is opposite of the spin of the Earth (spins East).

  • @wtm The pacific plate is not breaking free from the west coast. The Pacific plate is moving slowly northwest along the boundary with the North American plate. The San Andreas is a strike slip fault. The western side of CA Is slowly moving north as the eastern side is slowly moving south. Contrary to alarmist movies the western side is Not pulling away from the eastern side. The Pacific plate is not moving west. platetectonics.pwnet.org

  • Opposite spin from the earth. Same as the apparent movement of the large gravitational force of the sun and moon dragging against the spin of the earth, as we change the temperature of the crust.

  • @elainekirk every marked up map or photo I have seen shows it past 4. It has it's own tower with 4 vent stacks. The shared vent stacks for reactor 1&2 and 3&4 have a single stack in the tower.

    Tokyo sits atop the Eurasian plate. Beneath it, the Philippine Sea plate descends, or subducts, from the south, while the Pacific plate slips down from the east.

    Subduction is not a slow-and-steady process, but occurs in a "stick-slip" motion that gives rise to infrequent, but massive, convulsions.

    A major earthquake in or near Tokyo could cause a trillion dollars in damage, experts have calculated.
