  • @all another consideration is that Japan has a number of nuclear plants and is prone to earthquakes there is no way these children can be assured that they will not be exposed again at a later stage of their lives. You dont put a child in a car without a seatbelt just because most will never come to harm without one

  • @edano - You have to keep in mind that the radiation is comprised of alpha, beta and gamma rays. Gamma rays are what would affect a child in the uterus, and they comprise a portion of the radiation represented by a measurement.

  • Keep in mind though that I'm only referring to radiation from an outside source. Ingestion of radioactive particles is indeed far more dangerous, but far easier to prevent.

  • @fitter Good idea. I remember looking at those rings of heat signatures. I will see if I can get measurements on the heat images and compare to the knowns about the equipment dimensions. Will see if I can get something hammered out this afternoon. That could be a huge clue about #3's status.

  • @fitter They so far only released lousy quality video of the recent fly over. Images released were off that video. Rumors that they might have heat images from that trip. With missing 4.11 heat images from the MOD site, they might have those. They are being very tight with releasing images lately. But they might exist.

  • There's also the part about a majority of the radiation being emitted from iodine and not cesium. Iodine will not only represent a larger portion of the sample, but give off far more radiation than cesium because of its short half life.

  • @Hank Scorpio @all: i compared the school dose image to a normal map. the green N-S belt marks the highway. fukushima city quite north on the highway. this means the radiation is higher on the highway because particles arer blown into the air. this is a real danger of inhaling radiation on every step you make !!!

  • @Nancy if you see dean will you ask him about that, maybe part of the procedure for moving into the reactor of the caskets... also there is a silver looking oblong object on one of the lower floors, it think it could be "clean up demilizer tank... need to check what side of build its on and what side the pic its on..... the more i look at the equipmet that i don't see on the areials... the more it loks like they have lost a lot of there systems... if the tank is not there the pipe and shut off valves arn't there...

  • Radiation from a Nuclear Power Plant – Accident

    Under accident conditions at a nuclear power plant, involving fuel damage or melting, radioactive fission products are released from the fuel elements into water and steam surrounding the fuel within the reactor vessel. Primary fission products include radioactive noble gases (krypton and xenon), iodine, cesium and, to a lesser extent, strontium. As pressure and temperature build up in the reactor, the safety relief valves release the steam into the suppression pool in the torus (BWR design). Among other functions, the suppression pool helps to cool and trap the majority of cesium, iodine and strontium in the suppression pool water. Periodic venting from the suppression pool may be conducted to manage temperature and pressure and protect the integrity of the primary containment.

    Releases to the environment associated with venting consist primarily of radioactive noble gases, which, by their chemical and physical nature, disperse in the atmosphere and provide a source of radiation exposure in a passing plume or vapor cloud. The current conditions at the Fukushima Daiichi plant may result in a reduced effectiveness in trapping the radioactive cesium and iodine in the suppression pool. Therefore, the releases may contain higher levels of radioactive cesium and iodine, which provide sources of exposure from inhalation and ingestion.

    Specific information on key radionuclides is as follows:

    Krypton-85 – radioactive noble gas; beta-gamma emitter; 11-year half-life.
    Xenon-133 – radioactive noble gas; beta-gamma radiation emitter; five-day half-life
    Cesium-137 – radioactive form of cesium; beta-gamma radiation emitter; 30-year half-life
    Iodine-131 – radioactive form of iodine that concentrates in the thyroid gland; beta-gamma radiation emitter; eight-day half-life
    Strontium-90 – radioactive form of strontium; beta radiation emitter; 29-year half-life.

  • @all - so stepping back a little, am I correct in asessing that this is primarily a prolonged radioactive water & steam release? Has anyone seen any updates to the cofferdam/sandbag situation to contain the water until storage is available? Or has anyone seen any data from any recent sea water sampling? That seems to have dropped off the radar.

  • @jay imo that seems a fair assessment. Radioactive steam and cooling water will come off of the reactors as long as cooling is necessary. That might take months or years and it will end up in the environment. Hopefully they think of some way to recycle the radioactive cooling water but I don't see that happening anytime soon. This would be best case scenario, if nothing explodes along the way.
    Haven't seen any seawater measurements for a while either.
