@VeenOui The magnitude can be quickly measured initially by seismic wave monitors (they detect the earlier, less violent P-waves....)

@wtm where did you see the TEPCO statement about the discharge pipes... plant i have worked in also must run then out a distance, but they do have dischare gates and i would like to see what type of system they would be dischatging

@Fitter, it was in a TEPCO press conference about a week ago, just a passing comment about discharge pipes that went out from the reactors 3km into the ocean. They didn't say anything else about it after that.

@wtm It wasn't that large actually, since the epicenter was out at sea again over the fault line.

@wtm It just showed up on JMA like 5 seconds ago (initial info). It went up to Level 4 max, as predicted. Level 4 is strong enough to make you be on alert in case it gets worse, but not enough to actually be that scary.

@VeenOui No, should have been inside that radius, it is within 300 km of my city and I am 200 km southwest of Fukushima.

@Debra you can download EQ reports from iris.edu from one of their database applications (WILBER). It takes some playing to figure out what database parameters you want to specify but once you get them right you can retrieve mountains of data for spreadshseet analysis :-) I have also found some discrepancies in EQ data from different organizations but one can weed out the duplicate event records without too much trouble. @wtm I saw that....the prewarning is usually not off by such a large factor. New info says it went up to 5- in northern Ibaraki. 5- is enough to hide under desks.

Tenki.jp reports 10km deep and 5.8, and not off the coast but on land....maybe the prewarning got confused about the epicenter....that could have caused an incorrect magnitude calculation.

@FradyKat, been watching the quakes that are on the East side of Lake Mead (Arizona) East of Las Vegas. They just built a 1/4 mile suspension bridge over the top of Hoover Dam there. Can you imagine driving over that with a earthquake in the 3-4 mag range ?

@wtm I the last year, they have had 2-3 dozen 1.5 to 2.2 tremors, mostly in the lake. They say the water settling does that normally.
