@wtm agreed and agreed. But one of the most important parameters is the temp. of the s/c first (a measure of cooling ability) and then the temp of rpv (which is the nozzle temp and bottom, or head, temp.) second.

@marie rich - I would be better prepared to make operational comments regarding what they are specifically doing if we had a detailed P&ID schematic to make educated guesses. The drawings are not forthcoming for security reasons and its proprietry info. I guess they have their reasons. It was total speculation of why we were seeing the changes from normal operation and what they might be trying to accomplish. Kind of a method to the madness thing. Because I was with you on the confusion if you just read the parameters and not put it into some kind of context of what they are thinking. Otherwise it just seem like madness..

Back on the 31st, TEPCO reported on the groundwater, "TEPCO survey has revealed radioactive Iodine in the ground water at Fukushima Daiichi site, near the No. 1 plant, at a level ten thousand times the allowed limit." atomicpowerreview.blogspot.com Is this 'underground lake' potentially that hot?

Yes, they're a bit behind this group. Problem spotted back on 9 April, when they were only able to get the pressure up 5 kPa compared to 8 April.

Hidehiko Nishiyama, the deputy director general of Japan’s nuclear regulator, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, said at a news conference on Wednesday evening that three measures are being considered that would allow electricity and cooling at the plant to remain intact even after a tsunami measuring 15 meters, or 49 feet. Right now the site can withstand a tsunami of only about 18 feet, he said. One measure is to interconnect the external power lines that have been built to the power plant, so that if one power line is broken, the others can still carry electricity to the various reactors.

A second measure is to position a generator on top of a small hill inside the plant site, and the third is to place a fire pumper engine on the hill that could send water into the reactors and spent fuel pools even if electricity is interrupted. www.nytimes.com
