US Environmental Protection Agency communications has revealed a 1,000% increase for exposure to Strontium-90; a 3,000-100,000% rise for Iodine-131; a 25,000% rise for Nickel-63 in drinking water.

Any radiation has no safety threshold for human exposure and the EPA’s own numbers state that 25% of people exposed to these “new acceptable levels” would develop cancers. The EPA is not required to make its deliberation public or debated by Congress; all that is required to make this Federal regulation is simple publication of the changes in the US government gazette, the Federal Register. www.collapsenet.com

@Nancy: don't have much time right now (working), but I'd be glad to see more images.
About the temperature pics: you should beware that small differences of temperature may not be significant; one should take care of each materials emissivity: at the same temperature, water would emit more infrared photons than steel or concrete.
Then the green parts on #4 pic may be water or other material than steel or concrete;
it can also be radioactive debris heating, but you can't know unless, maybe, you also have the exact wave length of each infrared photon source, or you fix sensors values knowing emissivity of each material (which seems impossible to me given the mess there).

@UKVal - Thank you again. One thing I'm never clear on (and no doubt it has been discussed on here, but I've missed it) is how ongoing, long-term radiation is represented in relation to published safe levels, ie how to factor in x months' exposure. I know levels are "not harmful to human health" etc etc right now, but can't help but notice the ongoing upward trend.

@Scilla @All (re: Reactor 3 temp rise as possible instrumentation problem) I cannot help but linger on the frequency with which spikes in pressure, temperature, or radiation readings are reported as instrumentation problems. If we review the past month's reports, have there been *any* cases where a sudden *reduction* in those readings have been attributed to faulty instrumentation? Isn't it statistically unlikely that the only 'failures of instrumentation' occur when something negative has been observed? Yes, I realize this isn't news to people on this board, but I had to vent. The masterful obfuscation of reality surrounding this disaster is truly stunning. (...and this concludes my one comment per week limit as a lurker =P )

@UKVal @highlander @all This is an interview with Chris Busby and Jack Valentin. Dr. Jack Valentin is the scientific secretary of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). The ICRP risk model of health effects of radiation exposure is used by the IAEA, governments and nuclear plants everywhere. Here Valentin states that the ICRP model cannot be used to estimate health risks of internal exposure (ingestion or inhalation) of radionucleides. Valentin says it understates the risk by 100 times, while Busby says it underestimates risks by 1000 times. So, whenever you see a claim or a graphic that eating contaminated food is equivalent to so many hours in an airplane, or some such thing, it is provably false and misleading. Valentin is the #1 scientist in the world on this issue. www.llrc.org

I don't think the footage on the monitor has been released, if it has I don't remember seeing it do you? Also of interest is why we have no thermal images from the CSFP (common spent fuel pool) or DCS (dry cask storage) area. Probably not too concerned about dry casks due to their being pretty awesomely rugged. video.google.com is about impact tests on US casks. Just read the text describing what's done.

@Markfm TEPCo has a history of leak issues with DCS containers, I think it is prudent to have concerns with the entire FNPP site considering the evolution of events, the way in which TEPCo and all oversight or regulating agencies involved release information. www.nirs.org

@Bobby1 I'm puzzled by this EPA stuff. Aren't they the "Environmental Protection Agency"? Shouldn't radiation levels in food be regulated by the Food and Drug Administration? Obviously neither agency is all that trustworthy in actually protecting public health over industry wealth, but still - it seems like the FDA would be better situated to make determinations about 'safe levels' of food contamination, and establish testing protocols, etc.

I didn't come up with any concerns from that TEPCO cask storage presentation. I've read it several times. One lesson-learned on multi-day immersion in a reactor pool, but zero leaks observed.

@Bobby1 Busby is a politician and a performer VS. a scientist. The scientist does get out-worded. Busby's science is unreviewed and unverified. Busby's "scientific authenticity junksciencewatch.wordpress.com Just take a look. I see him as an ambulance chaser, and in this case, he does a real verbal beatdown on a scientist. Keep in mind, the scientists job, in this case, doesn't involve convincing uninformed people of dangers and hazards, but Busby's job is just that.

Considering the proximity of the spent fuel dry storage facility to the water adn thus the tsunami, do we know whether those buildings (and the spent fuel) are even still there??? (first post for me but I've been following all along - great stuff).
