  • @Nancy - You mention having a "reliable water supply" for your garden. How is this protected from radiation? I have a polytunnel, but am trying to figure out how to get uncontaminated water to it.

  • It's been pretty clear. We know they have had to be very careful with amounts of water, but also, it's warmer there, drier air. Still, it strikes me as odd too.

  • @gabe I've noticed small plumes of dark smoke (barely visible on cam) and steam before 10:00am Japan time, but I agree that it has appeared to be less so in the last few days.

  • @highlander city water as long as the city water tests ok. Dehumidifier and fish tank, we also have a water distiller. I also thought about getting an inline charcoal filter for the garden hose and maybe one for the house if we start having questionable water here. Supposedly from what I read brita type filters will lock up the contaiminents. The better whole house filters that sit in a canister and you connect pipes or hose to run through it could serve the same purpose. We use those inline ones when we go camping for weeks in western PA because the water is so full of iron. They are easy to set up.

  • @Tenzing I more intrigued by the disparities in the individual SFP numbers. R1 SFP is 200 short. R4 is 200 high even when you count both the spent load and the half-spent reactor load. I'm still trying to get a handle on what's happening there.

  • @Nancy It's my understanding that the solubility of the iodine and cesium means only a reverse osmosis filter is really effective. It's sad that it's come to a place where we suddenly have to worry about things like that.

  • @radioguy bobbi expressed interest in helping get that going. I should have more time next week barring a flood of new photos so could pitch in and help. But yes, tracking historical readings so we can get an idea of build up of long half life isotopes and also getting an easy to understand list of what you can do to help yourself could be a help to people here and for the general public to get an honest answer and quick info. I know there is lots of dismissal as any concern over contamination is fear and hype. But this constant fallout of longer lived things like cesium are building up. We need to gather that evidence for people's use and to fact check we are getting honest info from agencies and govt.

  • @radioguy , I checked a bit on water filtering myself and came across this reference: en.wikipedia.org . Active carbon is used for filtering air and water in hot cells. Since iodine belongs in the same periodic group of elements as chlorine and cesium in the same as potassium, carbon filters should be effective, perhaps not as effective as reverse osmosis. It is important to change the filters more often than recommended, because once they are exhausted they may release their content in a large chunk. You do want to avoid that.

  • For anyone interested in it, the CSFP information tends to be buried way down in the NISA Seismic Damage Information reports, immediately after Units 5 & 6 status. It's consistent, water had been maintained almost full, power/cooling restored 24 March, "As of 07:50 April 9th, water temperature of the pool was around 32℃." (Newer temps would be in newer reports, this was #84)

  • Since 29C is a pretty mellow temperature, and it is trending down a bit, and they reportedly have both power and cooling in the CSFP, that area doesn't appear to be a problem. Maybe it is, but the reported information doesn't look bad.

  • Question to those who have contributed here (& Reuters) since the quake. I seemed to have missed something. It appears the focus has changed to preparing to protect oneself from contents of plume (water supply/which veggies...) Are these comments tied to the 11 april Plume map posted here a few days ago? Am i reading this map correctly that the plume is expected to be as low as .1 km after the 18 April on the US West Coast? Is this where I should focus my attention, as i am i in the Oregon? Thanks. And by the way, I want you all to know that I am truly thankful to you all for the time & expertise you have shared on this blog.

  • @radioguy All going on around that Pacific plate eh? Been ominously quiet on aftershocks near Honshu for an unusually long time at the mo - about 8 hours so far. I'm now thinking another big one (M6+) any time in the next hour or so. The pattern there lately seems the longer the gap, the bigger the shock.
