  • @dean I have a tech question for you. The reactor cap, containment cap, the "steam dryer" apparatus that goes under one of the caps all get placed on the work deck when servicing the reactor. Is the placement of these items static or fluid as in they could plop the yellow cap in one spot one time and the next service put the dryer apparatus in that spot? Does that make sense?

  • ty Nancy.. I'll do the best I can without a blue print of the way the steam dryer mounts into the reactor on the bottom.. I would think that there would be a mechanical attachment, then the reactor vessel top has a series of studs that the top head is lowered onto, then the many many nuts on the studs... some sore of machine that is like a SPANNER WRENCH to sequentially tighten the nuts on the studs ... then the yellow concrete containment cap with I think we've learned is a solid connection to the containment.. it has to withstand some where around 70 pounds. and finally the top caps.. so,,, I don't see the yellow cap being ploped.. however, if an explosion of the magnitude that we've seen happen it could blow the top of the reactor vessel off and then push up the yellow cap and top cover..

  • @dean I was wondering about when they do service. They place the caps on the work floor in various places. Do those items have a designated place and can only be stored there or can they just put them whereever out of the way? So one time the yellow cap is in the corner and the next they put the dryer there. This image may help explain what I am trying to ask. www.houseoffoust.com

  • Nancy.. in most facilities ,, well at least the reactor I worked at had floor loading areas... there were lift height requirements and areas where loads could not be moved over those areas... as such.. every piece of hardware that came out.. had a designated place to store.. some times for convience , some times for the order taken off.. or other times for rad controls... I suspect it's the same at those reactors..

  • nancy.. from various photos we should see the same spots for the components.. however, there may be a difference between #2 and 3 and 4 as they were changed some on the floor plan as apposed to #1

  • @Nancy : it is a matter of quality management. every worker has to know where things are even when he is in another room or the shift changes. therefore strict protocols and designated places.

  • from what I can tell from those pre-earthquake images is the refueling crane straddles the round reactor well. That is helping figure a few things out

While international attention focused on the North Korean nuclear threat, Japan escaped serious international scrutiny as it pursued its nuclear destiny.   • @Nancy I'm starting to think that the drone images released to the public are poor quality on purpose. I think the real purpose of the drones is to collect heat and radiation readings. If there are any high-quality images from the drones I don't think we'll ever see them. Nice try, though...appreciate your work.

  • @Dom @Dan Thanks for the Japan Focus article. The history combined with current information makes for excellent reading that I would reccomend to everyone here.
    The section on the reprocsessing at Rokkash chilled my blood...
