On the pumping, trying to move 10000 tons of highly radioactive water at a rate of 480 tons per day. Still trying to figure out how to move another 57000+ tons of highly contaminated water. Concerning the Areva filtration, "will be able to reduce the radiation in the water by 99.9 percent to 99.99 percent".

If the question is on the mystery item it is an image of unknown date, out of R3 at Fukushima Daiichi, on the reactor work floor next to the steam dryer pool.

@elainekirk Ah. I didn't realize it was on his page. I grabbed full sized images by doing a URL hack to get full sized versions of all if his pictures and didn't realize he had that one labeled. "Remove the lid at the top of the reactor equipment" so something they hook up to the crane to remove the caps? Been up since 4:45 need more coffee

I know they decontaminate the inside.. and do ultrasonic testing.. but that contraption is bigger than I thought for that.. also they do shroud changeouts

@Markfm While I respect your decades of video surveillance, I personally think the latest T Hawk pics are very grainy. That creates major problems when trying to enlarge the photos. I really don't think TEPCO wants the outside world to see much detail.

Imager sizes and CODEC implementations. Even a decent source gets muddied if they then transcode, say from an H264 1 Mbps (pretty common these days) to an MPEG2 at fairly low rate. They have 720x480 source, but the video as-released is an MPEG2 at around 1.6 Mbps -- nowhere near what I expect the initial quality was. (I'm talking about the videos as posted on the Tepco site, April 15 T Hawk)

@Markfm that makes sense if they downgraded it poorly. But even downgrading it for the web doesn't 100% explain why the one on their website looks horrible and the one leaked to youtube is much better unless the version put on their site uses a crappy format and codec and the one to youtube was converted better. I think James may also be correct that there is some intentional degrading and editing of what is being released on purpose by TEPCO.

When you watch these drone vids, remember to look at what they're looking at and ask why. There's someone standing over the shoulder of drone op telling him/her where to look, zoom in, etc.

@marie rich I think it is either steam or the backside of the SFP. I was going to grab that frame and see if I can pull those details out to see what it is. Should have stills done at some point today in between a big pile of work I have to finish today.

@@Nancy In the spirit of looking for what they're looking at...In the beginning of vid, they look in the missing panel catty-corner (?) to spf. You can see steam there, too. Maybe that's the hot spot on thermals, because steam doesn't settle down and go to the side.

@Nancy just spoke to employee that has done Nuke outages... they have bring oxygen/accetaline tanks into reactor building during the outage stage.... (in the US)

@marie rich There are 3 areas on 4 that seem to be of interest. Those 2 areas below the SFP where you can peer in and have had possible steam coming out. There is also a section on the side wall when they look in at the yellow cap, off to the left is steam or smoke. That is the general direction of one of the hot spots an inward just a bit from that steam is the reactor well. I am hoping I can pull something useful out of the better quality vid.

@fitter Did he say what kind of work that is for? BTW, I saw a discussion over at physics forum. I glanced at it but didn't go back and read the entire thing. Someone thought they noticed 2 phases of damage at 4. 1 where the walls blew out but there was still a layer of asphalt ceiling. Then another image later where the asphalt ceiling is gone. Worth investigating more in case there were 2 events at 4. like maybe an explosion and later a fire that burned off the roof asphalt?
