  • I'm still curious about where 1 is headed. Core pressure, while still way below the original design point, is still on its slow, steady, upward run. Core temperature had been steadily decreasing, though nozzle temp bumped +8 on the last measurement.

  • @James Ward I didn't even think about it until last week someone posted an overhead that was dated after 3 blew and before 4 did. 4 had no damage.

  • @Nancy Ha! The tent idea is just a sign of TEPCO lunacy! Besides, unless you completely secure the edges of the "tent" gases will build up inside the "tent" until they begin to leak out from under the edges at the same rate before the "tent" was installed.

  • @James Ward we live in a high wind area. 70mph wind will shred everything no matter how heavy and secure you have it. That is below hurricane/typhoon winds.

  • @Nancy No doubt about it, when we found that shot between the R3 &R4 explosions I torqued my head. I keep looking back at that damage on the R3 side of R4 and it's just harder to figure. Two things. If you combine hydrogen and oxygen in a perfect mix, when you ignite it there are three byproducts, heat, water and vacuum. That explosion could have been two-stage First the H2 O2 flashed, creating enough vacuum to cave in the walls... before the top and whatever that big concrete arc is blew up, then rained right back down in place?

  • The vacuum cave-in indicates a pretty good H2 mix, but still had enough air mix coming in there was a secondary mix that caught? I'm trying to figure the process.

  • I would like it if they use different terminology for the #4 SFP as it concerns.. fission... In my training for canal accidents we talk about fuel element melt,, then "if" a critical mass or array is formed.. a criticality accident possible,,, before the event the critical mass would be small enough.. or have enough poison around it to keep it SUB CRITICAL.. then conditions change and the optimum conditions (thermal neutrons etc).. a CRITICALITY can occur. that criticality can be when the mass goes supercritical and.. unless there is a control rod affect in the canal what would allow just enough fissions to be a sustained criticality (which I dought judging from the state of the burn or melt).. the fission would go on for a some time.... with no contro or absorber capability there could be A PROMPT critical event which would release a huge amount of energy and could resuilt in debris being blown out of the pool

At approximately 5:45 am, a TEPCO employee discovered a fire atthe northwest corner of the Nuclear Reactor Building. TEPCO immediatelyreported this incident to the fire department and the local governmentand proceeded with the extinction of fire.     Unit 4 (shut down due to regular inspection)-Reactor has been shut down. However, we have confirmed the sustained damage around the 5th floor rooftop area of the Nuclear Reactor Building.-Afterwards, we confirmed the outbreak of fire at the northwestern part of Nuclear Reactor Building. We immediately reported this matter to the fire department and the related authorities.-However, at approximately 11:00am, when TEPCO employee arrived at the seen to confirm, the fire had already died down. At 5:45AM on March 16th, we confirmed the outbreak of the fire again but could not confirm it at 6:15AM. We will continue to monitor the situation carefully.

  • @dean R4 SFP is just loaded too. Fuel to burn. 226 metric tons BEFORE a month after the fact TEPCO admitted to hundreds of unirradiated rods in the SFPs.

  • @marie. That goes along with the idea of there being a secondary fire that burned off the asphalt roof. But one would think that would be significant enough to mention it. We should go back and look at the web cam picks around those fire times to see if there is black smoke on the cam shots

  • I think JO L'indien's original idea back mid-March is looking golden about now: the R2 core melt molten sieve is looking pretty good right now. 30,000 cubic meters of highly radioactive water in the R2 sub-basement area? Sounds like it was pouring right through for a while.

  • @marie rich north corners of 4 = seaside, yellow containment cap and a small area behind it, not sure what was there. Landside corner, steam dryer pool. I have not determined yet what corner the control room with glass viewing windows was in.

  • @marie rich It means something. It was where that fire started. Fitter has been wondering about welding tanks possibly having a hand in some of the events at 4. He said there are maintenance things where they need welding torches on the work deck. There are other things on that end. I will be taking an extra look on that end when I go back through all the interior images. I have photos of those corners from a few angles on 3 before the quake. Might give some clues.

  • @Nancy Dunno if you've seen the reports concerning a fire in TEPCO's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant back in 2007, where an investigation into the damage found that four transformers had been leaking oil and could have easily caused a fire.   • @es @marie rich thanks, transformers could have contributed. If it was post explosion there was likely debris in places there wasn't anything previously. Lots of potential interactions. We should make sure fitter gets that news story when he shows back up.

  • @DT I'll take a shot at it.... Unit 1 is a serious concern (to me). I don't believe they know what's happening with it. If they don't control the pressure it could have an explosion and release alot of radioactivity. Actually, more than is present in a running plant. There is always the possibility of corium burning thru containment shell, but I think that's unlikely unless another earthquake takes out cooling. Fellow bloggers, feel free to flame me
