  • @Jim Carver I have to wonder if something underground failed and released something? There was a slight increase in radiation levels around that time. Things went from single digits to low double digits. Need to see if I can re-find that chart.

  • @Nancy if you watch the video posted on utube about two pages back (nklistner) it shows the core change out... look at the top of the reactor, were there are two guys standing... they are standing on "keystone blocks" that go aroungthe top of reactor and are removable.... these probably maybe some of the flyin debres in some of the explosions

  • High levels of radiation discovered at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant could disrupt Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s timeline for a cold shutdown of the crippled facility, TEPCO officials acknowledged.


    An analysis of water samples taken from the storage pool on April 16 found cesium-134 at 160,000 becquerels per cubic centimeter, cesium-137 at 150,000 becquerels and iodine-131 at 4,100 becquerels.

    As a contingency plan in the event the cooling system cannot be restored, preparations are being made to install heat exchangers that use cool air rather than water. That installation work will also require workers to enter the reactor buildings.

    At the No. 2 reactor, holes have opened in the suppression pool connected to the containment vessel so repairs will be needed before the No. 2 reactor can be submerged. However, there is the possibility that radiation levels of several dozens of sieverts are present near the suppression pool. Such levels would lead to immediate health problems for workers.

    The utility company also says the water level in a tunnel linked to the Number 3 reactor has been rising several centimeters a day for the past week. The water is expected to rise to about one meter below the ground level soon.

    The company says water levels are also rising in the Number 5 and 6 turbine buildings.

    TEPCO says an estimated 67,500 tons of contaminated water are now in the Number 1, 2 and 3 reactors alone, hampering efforts to restore the reactors' cooling systems.

    The utility says at the Number 1 reactor, some cooling water poured in has likely evaporated.

  • @fitter There is a pretty good image of them standing in front of them I think. The different colored stack. Looks alot like the hole in the turbine building roof and the big slab sitting on the outside duct work.

  • @dean when we do work on a tank or piping system we are required to lock out the systems with a lock and bleed.... one islolation valve lock closed... a bleed line - locked opened... then asecond isolation valve lock closed... if they were working on systems or the reactor.. I would almost believe the cooling system to the SFP had to be looked shut... to isolate the systems... and it would not be a problen unless you have an earthquake in the middle.... if it take a couple of days to boil down.... you would theareticly be able to use a temp make up water or stop work for a shift and unlock sytstem and do your make=up .. what is your opinion ????

  • Footage of the Number 3 reactor shows steel plates and other debris scattered on the floor following the hydrogen explosion of March 14th. The doors of the circuit box were open, raising fears that the power system has been damaged. (Ya' think?!)

    TEPCO says humidity inside the Number 2 reactor was 94 to 99 percent, fogging up the robot's camera lens.

    The company says the humidity indicates that radioactive steam leaked into the building. It says it will need to install air conditioners to ventilate and clean the air of radioactivity before people can work there.

  • @dean - Did you see the nuclide analysis of the sample from the #4 SPF? There's almost 2.5 times more iodine than cesium in the sample. Wouldn't that prove recent fission as opposed to deposition from the early days of the event?

  • @Nancy not over, these go around and you might have to be from Pennsyvania to know what we call a keystone... they are circular or make a circulaer patteren when put together.... they line the outide top of the reators... but are removable...

    "The exposure would be so high workers could not re-enter the area for several years, officials said. If radiation levels remain at high levels, TEPCO's experienced workforce would all quickly reach maximum radiation exposure levels, severely slowing the effort to stabilize the plant."

  • @fitter They let out water at either 5 or 6 (or both) a few days ago and they were transferring water over to 5 & 6 to be held. Sounds like things are not "holding" very well. Sounds like they are just flooding the buildings
