If estimates of leaks of radioactive material into the sea from Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant were judged according to the International Nuclear Event Scale, the severity of marine contamination would be rated Level 5 or 6.

The Three Mile Island nuclear accident in the United States was rated Level 5 on the scale introduced by the International Atomic Energy Agency that runs from zero to seven and is based on radiation leaks into the atmosphere.

The radiation leaks into the sea have caused serious contamination of the marine environment, TEPCO's estimates show. Water that leaked into the Pacific Ocean from the No. 2 reactor's water intake contained an estimated 4,700 terabecquerels of radioactive substances, TEPCO announced Thursday. www.yomiuri.co.jp

@Optim we have no new heat images. Last one on 4 showed the sfp mostly cool but the hot spot outside the pool getting hot so it could be that. I think they did spray 4 today along with 3 iirc. Last heat images 4.20 an 3 was getting hot then

the steam is definitely from R#4 right? Or any chances of being from r#3? Earlier NHK world has their helicopter stationed 30kms outside and used to show few shots a day.. I guess they have been oredered out. There is no way to verify any data.

@Optim Steam from 2 spots. R3 and R4. Also 2 glows on the night shots. 1 where 3 is that we see every night. The other a more of a long narrow glow that was right about where 4's SFP is. They have released no photos today. No heat images for 2 days. They did a helicopter fly over friday and no images released. No SFP temps on the reactor stats

timesofindia.indiatimes.com this is from Jaitapur, India..the biggest nuclear power project in the world. This place is about 250-300kms from my hometown in India and about 250kms from Mumbai which has population of more than 10 million... Due to shortage of electricity in our state I was kind of positive towards this project. After seeing Japan and the govt. censorship in India I am 200% opposed to this project now

@dean In a phase system it raises the liquidus and lowers the solidus, so it raises the boiling pt. water and loweres it also.

Why don't the just dump in a few tons of bentonite? we use it to seal leaky ponds out here. It's like a spong for water and when it's wet it expands and seals

The burden of paying trillions of yen in compensation to people from areas near the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant will likely be shared by taxpayers and other electricity companies as well as the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co.

A draft government plan, obtained by The Asahi Shimbun April 20, proposes that TEPCO should remain under private ownership and shoulder the main responsibility for paying the compensation, but that a new public-private agency would bankroll and supervise it.

Under the draft plan, TEPCO will at first use its own money to pay compensation. It will have recourse to between 120 billion yen ($1.5 billion) and 240 billion yen from an insurance-like contract with the government agreed before the disaster under the law on compensation for damage from nuclear accidents.

But that money is expected to fall far short of the final compensation bill, and taxpayers' money is likely to be used to help fund the payouts.

@marie rich Why don't the just dump in a few tons of bentonite? Such approaches are kinda' throwing in the towel and giving up completely on recirculatory cooling. Perhaps that's why they aren't ready to go there...

@veenoui I think it is because they are shunned by the rest of the Japanese I dont think many will move away from the area they should have done what america did set the zone large and reduce if found safe to do so

@elainekirk From what i read, quiet a few actually returned to the current 20km evac zone defying orders due to the shunning and horrible housing....i would think, the govt. will have a very hard time enforcing this especially with the new zone cause they waited so long....heck, if they can't care for the previous evacuees, the new will be far more difficult

I pulled it into photoshop. It seems to be more smoke and hanging low. Either 3 & 4 are making one big blob or they have more smoke coming out of 4 in a wide area.

TAKOMA PARK, MD - April 19 - Today the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) docketed an emergency enforcement petition filed by the environmental watchdog group Beyond Nuclear. Beyond Nuclear’s petition calls for the suspension of operating licenses at 21 General Electric Boiling Water Reactors of the Mark 1 design (GE BWR Mark 1s). Beyond Nuclear has filed the petition in the wake of catastrophic failure of just such containment systems at identical atomic reactors in Fukushima, Japan at the Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant. In addition, Beyond Nuclear has highlighted the extreme risk posed by GE BWR Mark 1 high-level radioactive waste storage pools, at a total of 24 such reactors in the U.S., which lack emergency backup power supplies for circulating cooling water in the event of a loss of electricity from the primary grid. Lack of cooling water circulation in high-level radioactive waste storage pools can result in boil off, subsequent irradiated nuclear fuel fire, and large-scale releases of hazardous radioactivity directly into the environment, as has occurred at Fukushima Dai-Ichi Unit 4. www.tmia.com
