"This is a maintenance issue, not a safety issue," said Carrie Phillips, public affairs manager of Southern Nuclear, a division of the Southern Co.

"Southern Nuclear has replaced the breaker that failed, and as a conservative measure we have replaced all the components that could have caused the breaker to fail," she said.

Once the replacement is complete, the reactor will be restarted, Phillips said. She declined to say when that would be. www.cnn.com

@ifz, that is a good question. Once I have got it running I plan to check with the local university here to see whether I cannot bring it and set it up in front of a standard source. I ordered the parts for the low-techy thing ($50.- total) and gonna build it just for fun. I believe it will be only good for gammas (by the way, GM detectors in general are not very sensitive for the detection of beta radiation, unless the source is strong. If you protect the detector with a plastic foil, weaker particles will be absorbed).

@ifz, interesting. Point is it is not available anymore. Don't know how good the Russian GM tubes (it looks like one) are. I am certain that the "Servants" need calibration, too. The nice part about my find was, I thought, that it is supposed to work with low voltage, which is safe for those of us who are not that experienced with matters electrical.

@ifz, about checking food and sensitivity, difficult to say without testing the gadget. I am convinced that it is possible to use a GM counter to check food for gamma-radiation. If it is low, you must give it enough time to accumulate sufficient counts. You must be able to record the counts of course. There is a link at the bottom of the simple counter plan I posted to a more advanced layout with USB support.

So 2 days nothing out of TEPCO. I know they have new images they did a fly over yesterday. I did notice they were doing some new spraying of the SFP at 3. Other than that absolutely zero info out of TEPCO or the GoJ. www.tepco.co.jp

At this point each geiger counter we have has it’s own flickr account where photos of each reading are uploaded, and new uploads from any probe are aggregated at tweeted from @RDTNprobes. Our process is still evolving but with only 11 sensors out in the world right now we can iterate quickly.
