    Fukushima nuclear catastrophe zone
What are the Reasons for the Massive Inadequacy of the International Response to the Humanitarian and Technological Crisis in Japan?

by Anthony J. Hall / Professor of Globalization Studies at the University of Lethbridge "Given the history of the mainstream media as a funnel for the propaganda of the national security state, we have no cause to give credence to even the limited flow of news fed to the public on the severity or possible severity of this constantly worsening global disaster. I find myself especially disgusted by the failure of US authorities to get front and center in this matter that really goes back to the US occupation of Japan and its propping up of anti-communist puppets like Shoriki Matsutaro." www.veteranstoday.com

  • I've just been looking again at those cryptome pictures. 1 shows the circular object on the roof of 4 clearly. The others shown it as broken up - is this a camera angle artifact or could it be that the object disintegrated between the shots & fell through into the building?

  • @Tenzing "Japan now admits Fukushima at 154 trillion Bq’s/Day and West coast Radiation forecast" - wow. I knew it was bad, I just didn't know how bad.

  • @es I certainly agree with your point @James Ward Stir the pot? Argumentative? All that with 3 posts since the 11th March. Sorry mate, won't have any, no time for that. Where the attention is drawn is not #3, it is #1 and #2. If #3 had blown it's core out I think we would be looking at a completely different situation here plus nobody would be able to approach the site. As the current situation unfolds, information gets manipulated and stirred (as you like it) in multiple ways to serve media propaganda, disaster and food for the public to draws attention from other things. And yes, I would be very careful just reading all these articles and propaganda from all sorts of sources while the information can not be accredited verified. One thing is for sure, it's too big to hide, credible information will come out very soon from reliable sources.

  • Atmospheric radiation leak underestimated www.yomiuri.co.jp "Radioactive material was being released into the atmosphere from the plant at an estimated rate of 154 terabecquerels per day as of April 5, . . . The NSC previously estimated radiation leakage on April 5 at "less than 1 terabecquerel per hour." " In other words, the estimate was low by almost a factor of 7.

  • @talisker Reliable sources, like nuclear engineers and physicists, have been reporting quite a bit of "credible information" about what's actually happening at Fukushima. Their information has been FAR more reliable than anything reported by the GoJ, TEPCO, and the Japanese nuclear agencies. Japanese media outlets rely heavily on advertising revenue from TEPCO...do you think they're going to report anything other than what they're told to report? The foreign mainstream media has been basically locked out, relying instead on information given to them by the Japanese media. GIGO = garbage in, garbage out. Executives in the GoJ, TEPCO, and the Japanese nuclear agencies are basically rotating from one organization to the next with the primary purpose of protecting their collective butts during a major disaster. Your comment, "nobody would be able to approach the site", seems to fly in the face of reports of remotely-guided robots being used to clear the Fukushima site of radioactive debris. Why do you think that's being done? Is it remotely possible in your way of thinking that actual humans are simply unable to approach the site and work for more than a few minutes at a time? Where do you think that highly radioactive chunk of concrete come from? Hint: it's not a meteorite, although I'm surprised TEPCO didn't use that as an explanation. Sorry, mate...not buying your line of thinking today. Maybe tomorrow when I'm in the market for a good bridge.

  • @Markfm - so what's going on in SFP4? Looks like approx 375 tons of water needed over 2/3 days, a huge amount. Have aftershocks caused ?further leaks? ?the damaged fuel assemblies/rods debris to settle down in the pool - chugging?
    by hudebnik 4/25/2011 2:14:54 PM

  • Has anyone seen any recent reports about ongoing deliveries of fresh water to Daiichi, for their water-pumping activities? I assume they must be continuing to get water shipped in from somewhere, but haven't read anything about it for a while - we heard of boats moored up and supplying tanker loads back in the early days.
    by es 4/25/2011 2:15:53 PM

  • The doors to the SFP's are sealed by inflatable rubber bladders which failed when they lost power, now that they have power the seals may be re-inflated but obstructions may be present in the seal areas. Not to mention that the quake may have damaged the pools...
by Ralph Unger 4/25/2011 2:17:59 PM

  • I believe 4 is the one where they reported significant basement flooding (5m as of maybe a week or 10 days ago).
by Markfm edited by Markfm 4/25/2011 2:19:19 PM

  • @Markfm I think the rising temps in 4 is the story of the day. It was boiling Fri. They cooled it now it is inching right back up there. There is also the worry of the structure that keeps being mentioned. TEPCO has stated they have to shore up that SFP. There is really no way to get in to do it. With all the rubble you can't get a small robot all the way it, if you do they can't do much. You can't get a human or big robotic machinery into the area from the outside holes. They also are not stating any info or images gathered from inside the area under the SFP to give an idea what the area looks like. I honestly think the SFP has lost what little tie in it had to the outside wall structure and the outside wall structure is weak. So it is all just hanging on by the connection at the bottom to the concrete containment structure. We know it is leaking and the fuel keeps getting hot. If that SFP gives way it is going to be a catastrophic mess and TEPCO has no realistic way to prevent it that I can see.
    by Nancy 4/25/2011 2:20:02 PM

  • @Markfm correct on the basement flooding on 4
    by Nancy 4/25/2011 2:20:15 PM

  • @James Ward One says liquid not leaking now. The other article talks about a particular radioactivity sample (apr 15) released since day 1 and compares it to the highest sample after sellafield/windscale, you know, the UK radiological disaster. It doesn't mean significant radioactive liquid leaks are continuing. They might be, but the reports are apples and oranges, not contradictory.
    by RBean 4/25/2011 2:23:02 PM

  • I don't know if Elaine has posted this or not. She found another floorplan for Reactor 1. It is of the basement level and was part of a 2003 leak that happened in the basement. Top link on my main page, new information section. Also added some video stills of the broken away portion of reactor 3 www.houseoffoust.com

  • The truth is alway written between the lines for the Japanese, the truth can be uncomfortable so it is not always directly confronted. Keep that in mind when reading articles from Japan. What we may perceive as hiding the truth, is SOP for many Japanese.
by Ralph Unger 4/25/2011 2:28:53 PM

  • So, this far in 4 is still a problem, 2 is just a mess. I cannot help wondering about 1. Hope when #5 power is "temporarily" disconnected as part of the power grid upgrade they don't mess that up.
    by Markfm 4/25/2011 2:29:46 PM

  • @James Ward Per your comment in response about people being unable to approach the site. This is largely true. They have had a very limited number of people in and as more data is compiled some of those early people in like the Tokyo fire fighters likely got some large doses of radiation. The edited down version we have gotten states 30 TEPCO workers have been moved to other jobs due to maxing out their radiation levels, nothing about SDF or firefighters that were on site. Since TEPCO workers didn't have dosimeters those people probably didn't either.
