@radioguy what I noticed on 3 was similar. The typical outward fireball and then about a second or two later the big upward burst. I had a video sent to me that shows the building actually sucking in before the first blast. I need to go see if I can verify that for myself and have not yet. If it did indeed suck in the building first I think that is a sign of something rapidly eating oxygen first. I am not sure what kind of smaller fire or incident would rapidly suck up oxygen first but I have to wonder if that kicked off everything else. Or did the hydrogen rapidly eat the oxygen before it hit a point it could become a fireball?

fyi - In reading some of the older US papers and some accident modeling papers, it seems that: 1) There is a risk of re-criticality in BWRs when water without boron is flooded on a degraded core (melted control rods, some intact fuel) 2) The risks involve rapid hydrogen generation 3) The trigger scenarios include what appears to have happened at Fukushima: station blackout (loss of power) & failure of cooling systems. 4) The expected results vary with the models. -One proposes that a degraded BWR core will reach recriticality if "at least a length of one meter of fuel is intact and "the coolant void fraction in the core is below 0.6." - One result is a melt pool in the core; another is the formation of a rubble bed. In the rubble bed, one possibility is the fuel may be "in a fuel geometry". 5) A concern is the "super prompt-critical excursion" event which includes a large pressure pulse which could damage the RPV, but that is viewed as unlikely (but possible).

another thing I wondered on 3. There is a pipe that comes out of the RPV top for the venting according to some diagrams I have seen. If that pipe was leaking it could have been leaking hydrogen into the containment as well as the work area. Could the fireball on the work deck also then reached into containment for a 2nd explosion that blasted that straight up due to the shape of the containment? We have found yellow shards around 3 but can not tell if they are containment cap or something else.

nancy on smaller research reactors they use that valve to vent while they are lowering the water level to do tank work inside the vessel.. with out taking the dome off

jeebug 2 weeks ago @jeebug Another non-nuclear mushroom cloud: the train explosion on 22 august 2008, Oklahoma. There is a good compilation video of that showing what it looked like. Much more flame than this Fukushima blast but about the same height. The difference is that hydrogen doesn't produce much visible flame when it burns.
Fukushima was a typical gas-combustion explosion.

4billions 2 weeks ago @4billions ty, the reason the mushroom cloud is not so prominent is because of three blasts --- if there was only one you would see a defined mushroom cloud --- but even if there was a prominent mushroom cloud people would still deny it --- i have a whole wealth of information on this diaster but chose not to publicize it because it would disturb a lot of people --- let us just say we are dealing with some very stupid people or people who are trying to save butt
