  • @dean/anybody- is borate expensive? I am looking at docs re NISA/METI finding they were using non compliant instrumentation in 06/07 and amongst the docs is one regarding low borate in sfp's so just wondering if I am looking at a load of 'economies' or just sloppiness

  • @Edano just being hypothetical, not trying to suggest #3 cap is there or it isn't, who knows, but those yellow chunks are sitting right next to #4 in the pic. If I remember correctly #3 exploded before #4. Checking the vids, this seems to be a #4 wall chunk, so shouldn't we expect the rubble/dust from #4 to cover those chunks, rather than them sitting on top of its debris?

  • @Edano: Comparing that yellow to the cap in the video still on page 2 here (as I write), I'd say it's exactly the same hue of yellow (with a strong green bias). Notwithstanding a flukey colour mismatch between the two media (highly unlikely coincidence), or something else painted the same colour as the cap, I believe it must indeed be debris from the cap. Hard to say from the pic whether the debris was blown off the cap from an external explosion or from one within the CV mind (though I think the latter).

  • Agree with Paul, we haven't seen other parts painted yellow. Although the only cap we have actually seen up to now is only #4!! We have no clue about any of the other caps as for color or integrity from vids/pics. Some interesting questions, what is the containment cap made of and how would it fracture after a strong blast? Should we see large or small chunks? According to the design I saw several layers of really thick steel are used to plug the well on the service floor level, where would that go after the blast? In order for the cap to fracture and come out, those have to go first. This is a lot of heavy steel, it should have made a hole on the top of the building or shifted. On #3 the structure H-bars on top are still holding together in the middle.

  • @talisker : the cap is concrete, it would be logical and maybe a rule to have all the same color, the metal structures on top of #3 are identified as the refuelling crane trails that went up into the air and came down on the reactor again. it is not an intact part of the roof. so the cap could have been ripped to pieces, gone up into the air, while the crane went strtaight back to the reactor.

  • @Edano yeah I would expect all of them to have the same color. But are you sure it's concrete? I looked at the making of video and other sources and it looks very much like steel (could be wrong)

  • @talisker : i am sure but cannot proove it. i think a metal cap on concrete containment would put too much thermal stress on the bolts. it would not be clever.

  • @talisker the yellow domed cap is steel the flat plates that go over the reactor well are concrete slabs. I have a bunch of images of the inside of the reactor work floors. Would those help?

The more precise the combination of H2 and O2, and the purity of them, will determine the amount of vacuum. In a perfect mix, all you have left after the flash is water and a collapsed container. This wasn't that mix, but that's an oxidation reaction so complete the only thing left but water is excess )2 and other gases in the chamber. or excess H2, in which it's just waiting for the post-explosion vacuum to suck in more oxygen.

  • @Scilla I wonder the same thing about that. I tried to find out if the new shroud comes welded in a circle or not and didn't find anything so far. The stamped metal pattern didn't match another image of a shroud I had seen but that doesn't mean the new one wouldn't have a different imprint on the metal.

  • @radioguy cool, now to figure out why? :-) I don't know enough about explosions but what you mentioned about the chemical mixes of oxygen, water, hydrogen etc. I would love to be able to get an explosives expert to explain this. Maybe we should call mythbusters? :-)
