@Scilla I hope none of them happen. The constant quakes off Japan are a worry and nobody is getting any sort of reports about how the buildings are coping with them. I doubt TECPO really knows since they can't get inside to gather enough data.

@Scilla With a SFP that is leaking hundreds of tons of water/day, has experienced two fires, and is on the fourth floor of a building that has been subjected to a blast equivalent to thousands of sticks of dynamite...hope may be the only thing keeping it together.
@Reed I keep thinking through how to shore up #4 and without the ability to get under the SFP shoring it up seems impossible. They have not been able to get a good image inside the undernearth through those holes. I would not want to be the guys under there prepping the concrete molds. I wonder what the sVh would be under there.

@Reed I wonder if it has to do with the "wall" they talked about putting in to prevent radioactive water from leeching off site. I guess it is all in the marketing. Unintended leaking and run off becomes an underground tank. :-)

@Reed Just popping out of my lurker's cave to thank you for two of your comments this morning -- the one minutes ago on the 'power of hope' at Fukushima #4 SFP, and the one earlier on mankind's use of the ocean as a toilet "When will Man learn that the ocean is not a toilet for anything with a half-life longer than his own lifespan ?" -- both strike me as quite profound, and I have saved them to share with my clients and friends. @All (esp. the regulars) A million thanks for keeping this discussion going, and for all the links and information. @ll Here's a pretty good decay calculator: www.radprocalculator.com for online use. Looks like there's some android apps for download and this is the equation A=Aoe-( 0.693t/T1/2 ) where Ao is the initial activity, t is the time elasped since the initial activity and T1/2 is the half-life of the isotope. If you're not used to fractional exponents 'T to the one-half means the square root of T' .

Notice that the value will be negative, this is because radiation is coming out of the system and towards the outside. The measure of particles Bqs or Ci's are always positive, forget the US rad sheets, they're worse than worthless.

Sayer Ji of testthewater.org was one of the people who actually followed through on Corexit testing in the BP disaster, has a video out about toxicity from Fukushima. I found it in a search for health mitigation info, and found it on this site, which is a pay site, but gives the top level, and as such, the list of things that are possibly useful, with how many references. In other words, you can get a lot of info for free. The 16 minute video lays out the lies used to hide the danger. I lve the line comparing the response to BPO and the response to Daiichi: "responding to 3 dimensional problems with 2 dimensional solutions." Flatlanders trying to understand and deal with avalanches. He gives a big hat tip to Dutchsinse.

I am reposting this for the benefit of the people who jumped in later this morning. I received this from a reporter anyone have any thoughts on the air cooled thing or the other statements they gathered? Some updated information about the plant.(updated 26th April Japan Local time) Source of the imformation below is electricity mechanic who has been working in the plant, and Government Official realated to nuclear development.
<<<< 1 >>>> One of the electricity mechanic told me that it is almost impossible to recover the original power bord in plant2. Half of the circuit breaker is under water, and the water it self is highly contaminated.
<<<< 2 >>>> For plant1, it has been decided that they are going to use air-cooling heat exchange system, instead of water-cooling system.(Government official)They say that they will have it ready by next month, and begin cooling the plant as soon as it arrives.
<<<< 3>>>> For plant4, though there is no nuclear fuel rod inside the plant, there are used ones gathered in pool to be cooled douwn. The problem is that the main frame of the building that sustains the pool is badly damaged by fire, and if next quake strikes the plant, they are not sure if it could hold. To solve this problem,Tokyo Electric Company is planning to build an iron frame column from the bottom of the pool to prevent it from breaking up. They say that this could be done by the end of June. Hope that no quake will strike until then....

Did we ever figure out what caused the explosion at #3? It makes a big difference regarding which isotopes were ejected at a high altitude.

@Nancy , cooling #1 with conditioned air seems an odd idea. When I grew up, we used to own VW bugs. The engines were air-cooled. If you wished to visit a hot country, you needed to install an extra oil cooler and had to carry an extra-large fire extinguisher next to the driver's seat. I cannot imagine air cooling works more efficiently than water cooling and wonder why they resort to this option.

@ALL - I think there must be a cover-up of the rad sickness of the workers at this point. Because this HAS to be causing the non-robots to become the living dead. I think this needs to be exposed by our group. We can speculate all we want on what happened and what colour a piece of steel is, or what they should do but won't. But keeping them honest of the ongoing inpact on human life should be a focus of this group. In the end I think it would make the most IMPACT..

@Peter Melzer - a week or so ago there was discussion of using an air cooler water system not unlike a car radiator (or an aircon unit) but of course all this supposes that they can get close enough to anything to connect pipes etc.

@ethbridgean: That is where local Japanese media outlets will come into picture. We cannot speculate or even find out any news info. sitting one ocean across. Local media has to take responsibility and state real news even if it is disturbing... Maybe, Greenpeace can play a bigger role if they get hold of some info.

@Nancy when the "us assesment" back in march was released they said the one of the reactors (i thiought it was one) was not getting water in the "core"... but in the contaninment vessel.... I have not heard any more and thought they had found a pipe that wounld provide water in the core... that is also about the time they started talking about using the nitrogen and air cooled system... maybe someone could look at the "US assemt" and see if my info is right and if any one has heard that they fixed that problem
