  • I just have a hard time buying a vacumn in there, since nature abhors one. There are a lot of gases being produced that would make that unlikely. And BTW Bernoulli's principle doesn't relly apply in this case since we are not dealing with any appreciable velocities.

  • More likely the steam and such is coming from a spent fuel pool which is not contained at all.

    "The Health Protection Agency, Environment Agency and Scottish Environment Protection Agency monitoring stations have reported further minute traces of radiation associated with events at the Fukushima nuclear facility in Japan. Overall, the levels are lower than those observed in the previous update published on April 21.

    The levels being detected mean there is no risk to public health in the United Kingdom from the environmental concentrations resulting from the release of radioactive material at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The monitoring equipment is extremely sensitive and can pick up trace levels well below any potential risk to human health.

    Notes

    1. The HPA, Environment Agency (EA), Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) have jointly been providing updates of their monitoring findings associated with the Fukushima event via the HPA website. The next update will be published at 2pm on Thursday May 19. However, as SEPA is returning to routine sampling frequency from today (May 5), it will now be making data available on a monthly basis for the HPA updates."

  • Workers have been trying to fill the reactors with enough water to bring the nuclear fuel rods inside to a cold shutdown and if the agency approves the report, TEPCO would increase the rate at which it is pumping in water to speed up the process.

    Meanwhile, the temperature of the No.3 reactor, currently about 240 C, has been rising and need ed to be watched, said Hidehiko Nishiyama, deputy director-general of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.

    "We do not need to be suddenly worried, but we need to be careful if it continues to rise," Nishiyama told a news conference, adding that TEPCO has increased the amount of water it is pumping into the reactor

  • @edano that really suprises me and I think we are seeing the start of a camppaign to lower the standing of other suppliers (chubu got the same implied smirch earlier) they must be hoping if they tar everybody with the tepco brush then they may recover better.
    I have read so many reports including chubu-hamaoka and tohoku - onagawa re the seismic improvements required of them following 2006 . It is tepco who seem to have delayed even doing all the studies required of them.

  • Twelve workers wearing oxygen tanks entered the building on Thursday. A hydrogen blast the day after Japan's March 11th quake and tsunami left it badly damaged.

    TEPCO says the team managed to install a total of 8 air ducts inside the highly radioactive building after one-and-a-half hours of work.

    TEPCO says the purifiers are now working, and it will take about 3 days to vent the air, filter it, and return clean air.

    It hopes to lower radiation levels enough to allow workers to remain inside for longer periods of time.

    If everything goes according to plan, workers will enter the building as early as Sunday to check for damage to the pipes and valves. About a week later, in mid-May, TEPCO hopes to start building an external system to circulate cooling water into the reactor.

  • I'm trending towards failed instruments because there is fairly high heat plus water. Coupled with the large initial explosion it is more likely a sensor issue than that water outflow is creating significant vacuum.

  • High heat makes sense to me as even the smaller #1 is posited by tepco as generating 1500 kw of heat in the rpv, and tepco acknowledged increasing water input on 3 due to temp concerns.
