The scariest thing I've read in days was yesterday's EPA announcement that (and I'm paraphrasing from memory): "since the levels from Fukushima continue to decrease, we're dropping off of alert status. The next readings on milk and drinking water will be in approximately 3 months."

The IAEA no longer has monitoring teams in Japan. Now all info. apparently comes filtered thru them.And OHHH, a reporter is asking about the spikes!

If a comment is made directly relating to current news/tech, it is reasonable as long as it isn't blatantly inflammatory or derogatory of others (just my opinion). If a poster actually wants one of their comments deleted, no problem doing so.

@elainekirk I finished the document on what they did bother to do for EQ upgrades. What was in that document consisted of adding mesh to the hillside by the entry drive so vehicles could get in. Added a hand rail to the control panels in the central control room so people could hang on during a quake. Added extra metal bracing on the air conditioning ducts. Added some shock absorbers to the big exhaust tower, the one that has multiple pipes in it. That is all. So unless we find more docs. that have other EQ hardening retrofits there were none. Meanwhile Hamaoka shut their down.

@elainekirk I am going to put the things I am working on, online as I finish them since it seems to be taking a bit to finish all. Should have the first one (retrofits) on here in a few minutes. The Hamaoka report I saw was online as a web document (shows the bracing and the shake tests). If you have more info on it and have not already emailed it to me let me know so i can watch for it.

This is a good chunk to start with, their report is further down the doc but I couldn't resist showing that some companies did take their responsibilities seriously -

All the electric power companies are scheduling to finish the major part of the
geological research and the determination of the basic ground movement assumed by
the rese6rch results by the end of this fiscal year (March 2008) except for
Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station and Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station,
which had already submitted the seismic back check report. The seismic back check
will also be conducted for the safety significant components of one unit for eac.....
(2) On the event of the earthquake, the marine sonic survey is additionally conducted for
seven power stations (Note-i) and Rokkasho reprocessing plant. Therefore; all the
nuclear power which submitted the report on August 20, 2007, conducted the marine
sonic surveys, except for Hamaoka NPP, of which seismic back check report had
already been submitted and currently under safety review in the sub-committee on
the seismic and structural design

@Edano That "green" blog misspelled the name of the project--it's OSCAR, Ocean Surface Current Analyses Realtime, www.oscar.noaa.gov and while it may be useful, I am more interested in the sub-surface currents that will bring flocculated detritus into near-shore environments. I don't think surface currents will tell the tale on that scenario.

@Markfm I asked one of the reporters yesterday. They said that TEPCO is verbally giving these SFP temps and had no explanation why they are giving them verbally to reporters and not documenting them anywhere. They are being told that SFP 4 & 3 are running 80-90c
