  • Rob, what I described is supposed to be the entire process. The devil is in the details of how long it will take to effect any needed repairs to pipes/valves. By Sunday they hope, if the air filtration has worked, to begin to actually have people move within the #1 building, checking for radiation hot spots, then assessing the pipes.

  • @wtm : that is exactly my point. if you have a breach, you would expect 1 atm pressure. if corium seals the breach and then slowly drops out, then you would get a slight vakuum in the core.

  • @Edano, that is what I think is happening, at first, after the explosions, the S/C and D/W were both around outside air pressure, then have slowly changed now. I think you are right and that the corium is continuing to melt and drop down, causing that vacuum. They don't seem to be able to raise the water level higher than what they have been. Have to continue to wonder about the meltdown time line as to the time it is going to take to melt though the D/W, as it seems that the corium there is still very active after all this time ???

  • Jim -- likely correct, but that makes this even more a game of blind man's bluff. That's why, I'm sure, TEPCO said an early action on #1 is verifying that the unit's RPV WL and containment pressure sensors are working correctly.

  • Correct. 3 is emitting lots of steam, which means there has to be pressure in there, things getting forced out.

  • This could also be a coordinated vent of those units, just enough light to see what they are doing, but not enough light for everyone else to see what they are doing. On the TEPCO cam, can't see it happening, on the TBS cam it is visible.

  • No other logical source for the steam than the water being pushed into the RPV. With #3 temps, and the increased water flow, there must be pressure.

  • @Marie -- Yes, #3 SFP could indeed be steaming. I still expect the RPV, though, to have real, positive, pressure, just due to the amount of water going in and its temperature.
